GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

It's always driven me crazy that the thread title doesn't say

"GAF's Wii Homebrew thread: Read the GAF Homebrew Wiki or face the dire, dire consequences."

It's so Nintendo.

Any one know why ever since v57 (including the new v57b2), Cfg won't default to the Flow-Z GUI that I have it set to? I've checked and double-checked my config files, but it always defaults to that classic-style text list. Sad face.

Because the choice of whether you start on the text list or GUI is not controlled via the gui_style option. What you want is:
Code:
gui_style = flow-z
gui = start

Anyone know if SMG2 will have usb loader issues? I want to bring my copy home this sunday, install it and never touch the disc again.

:(
Try Cfg's disc loading feature, or one of the other Region Free techniques.

Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands is making it look like SMG 2 might have something interesting, however we probably won't know until the game launches.

I've had my config set like that since Flow-Z was implemented.
When I updated to the v57 builds, that stopped working. :/

Are you sure you don't have two config files with one overriding the other? Check the global options page to see if an additional config is listed.

As another sanity check, try putting something really obvious into the config.txt you are editing. Something like gui_title_top = 1 or cursor = "XX" just to confirm you're editing a correct file.

Also, if you use the online update to downgrade to an earlier version, does it start working again?

Gecko OS won't load it either. Just tried it. :(

The disc might be borked. It's a brand new copy I just opened today, though.
Play with the language settings as well. YOu want to make sure it isn't trying to load in Japanese.

Just had the "SD problem" too..
I went into the SD Channel..and was greeted with the "device can't be read" message..

Works in the computer..but no longer works in the Wii..even after formatting the card, but other cards work with no problem..

So went back to my 2GB one (was using 4GB)...

For anybody wanting to play PoP via USB Loading, you should know that it's got some new IOS detection that makes it crash.

One way that has been discovered to avoid that is to use rev 9 of IOS249 (on WBFS of course). All versions of Cfg work with it that way (but you also must turn on the Anti 002 fix). Only older versions of GX will work with it, though.

For those that don't want to downgrade the IOS, there will be patches soon too, so you can just play it on the disc until the patches are released.

just follow the wiki. if there are any games that don't work, just do a search or ask here. the only one that might give you problems is MH3.

i dont have any problems, but i just want to understand what the difference is between the different iso's ( iso 60, iso 37, iso 38)
They're IOSes, not isos and they each have different function sets. E.g., 37 is good for USB peripherals (Wii Speak, Rock Band, Monster Hunter). It's all explained in the IOSes Explained link I gave you earlier.

WiiSX Beta 2 preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exHpCEBCfDk

Glitchy audio at times, but other than that it's looking good! Though I'm not sure why Mega Man X5 (or X6? who the hell can tell) runs so much worse in that vid than Driver/GT2/FF8.

Maybe it's because the audio is in XA format in the Mega Man games? Not sure.

Anyway, it looks very impressive. Hope the battles in the final fantasy games work well (AFAIK battle swirls, some glitchy/missing effects and sometimes slowness are common problems in WIN emulators...)

Personally, I'm more exited about this than the N64 emulator heh.

Alright, Trauma Team is bitching about the firmware. Time to update my Wii that I haven't touched (hurr hurr sex joke here) in about two years since Trauma Center: New Blood came out and I beat it.

Now, I'm updating the Homebrew channel first.

Something about 1.0.6 and I have 1.0.1 (or something like that) and that I should install BootMii and DVDX?

The upgrade installer comes up:

"Using IOS versions: Installer: 36 HBC: 36 DVDX: 36

Homebrew Channel: CAN BE INSTALLED
DVDX: CAN BE INSTALLED
BootMii: CAN BE INSTALLED"

I'm assuming this is fine, and I'm going to do a complete install, even though I dunno WTF BootMii and DVDX do. *shrug* I'll find out later, I guess.

Installed the updated HBC, installed DVD, Installed BootMii as IOS (Good? Bad? I dunno, going by the seat of my pants), no problems.

HBC is apparently updated.

Now, what do I need/get to update the firmware from... who the fuck knows (edit: 3.2U) firmware from 2007 to now so I can play Trauma Team and then forget about the firmware updates that Nintendo tries to shove down my throat until the next Trauma Center game for Wii is out? :lol

Edit: And yes, I know of the wiki but I like having an open dialogue in a thread so I don't completely fuck up something. I have to ask questions and double check. :lol

That's fine, but please don't ask any questions which are already answered here and here.

I've spent a significant amount of time trying to answer every question you may have about upgrading and making the process really simple and risk free, and I don't think there's anything else you need to know, really. If there is something missing, please still ask as I'm always happy to add more when it is useful.

Okay, so before I begin to update to 4.2U.

I need to install cIOS249: Which requires, Waninkoko's cIOSX rev 19.

Since my Wii is connected to the internet, I assume I don't need to get the other file needed for this? Am I reading that right?

After that, since I'm 3.2U currently: I let it choose the default IOS it wants to run?

Select IOS57 v5661 for the base IOS version with D-pad left/right and push A

With the D-pad, select network installation if you are connected to the Internet

Let it install and I'll have IOS249?

After that, I grab DOP-Mii 12 or later

# Start the Homebrew Channel and run Dop-Mii.
# Select IOS249 to install other IOSes with left/right and push A
# Select Boot2 from the menu. Press 'A'

It'll install and I'll be free to use 4.2U from Nintendo's servers? Or do you recommend going through the SAFE Update process? I'm clueless on this. What do you suggest for the safest way to update, method 3/SAFE Update?

Is that correct? I'll start grabbing the files but I just want to confirm this before I do something stupid.

Yep, you have everything straight. And use method 1.

DOP-Mii isn't working. It loads in the homebrew channels and then blank screens. The remote doesn't synch and I have to turn it off with the power button on the console itself because it isn't showing/loading anything.

I've downloaded the file five times, deleted EVERYTHING but it out of sd/apps/DOP-Mii and sd/apps/, still nothing. Deleted the root of /sd/ so the only files are /sd/apps/DOP-Mii.

Nothing. It shows me nothing at all. What am I doing wrong?

So apparently I have updated to 4.2 at some point, but don't remember doing this. My homebrew is all still intact and and installed, so surely it must have been done a 'safe' way.

Is three anyway to check which way I updated?

I know, kind of a silly question. :lol

Did you install IOS249 first? (if not, do so)

Do you have any Gamecube peripherals plugged in? (if so, remove them)

Use Dop-Mii to check the versions of your IOSes. If 249, 222 and 223 are version 65280, then they are stubs and you updated via the official Nintendo update.

Also, if you had BootMii installed as boot2, check if you can still start it. If not, that's another indicator of the official update.

In any case, I'm pretty sure you'll find one of those to be true.

Yes.

No.

Respectively.

Edit: In fact I ran the customIOS installer again.

3.2: Let it choose the default IOS, it wants to install IOS249: Assume this is okay.

It wants to do the v56 5661 or whatever long 66 thing is, the wiki says to use this one.

Installation Successful, press any button to reboot.

Rebooting...

... Back to the Homebrew Channel, Wii doesn't restart or anything. Not sure if this is a sign of the installing failing or whatever, but...

DOP-Mii still won't run. WTF?

Do you have another SD card or USB drive you could try? HBC will launch apps from a FAT partition on the drive if there is no SD plugged in or you push 1 and select the USB.

I guess I'll pull out out a USB flashdrive I had laying around and see. Just put it on /usb/apps, right?

Okay, put DOP-Mii on my USB at /usb/apps/DOP-Mii/boot.dol

HBC finds it, loads the application.

...Still nothing. Blank screen. Remote is off when the application loads and can't synch, have to turn it off with the power button on the console as it isn't loading anything.

Um...?

Sorry, I'm stumped.

Have you updated the HBC lately? Try that. Reinstall IOS249 too, but that shouldn't really fix anything, unfortunately.

Oh, also try turning off your Wii's Standby mode and WiiConnect 24.

Yes, yesterday to 1.0.6, unless there is a newer versoin?

Did that today, still no dice.

Guess I'll go turn off the standby and 24/7 and see if that works. :/

Turned off 24/7, don't see an option for standby. No dice.

Should I just update to 4.2 anyway? I mean unless there is a newer version of the HBC, 1.0.6 is the latest? The wiki says updating to 4.2 with this latest version won't let it be ate? So it should be fine?

lostinblue said:
Yup, the emulator definitely got worse with this release; if anyone needs the last 1.51 based-build just ask, I was lucky to have a backup of it and downgraded.

The prompt for "a new version is available do you want to download it?" should be able to be disabled too; it appears each time I start it up.
Apparently it can be disabled by changing the following in the file networkop.cpp:

Code:
static bool updateChecked = false;
to
Code:
static bool updateChecked = true;

It does come with a very minor risk due to Nintendo's poor update code. It's only a fraction of a percent, though.

But, it's totally fine to do the update since the HBC is up-to-date, right? I don't have to worry about it being ate now?

Query; what was it that causes the HBC flip thing? I remember them saying it was something to do with using an IOS or something that pirates use for playing burnt games, but shouldnt this be the same for people who use the USB? Mine and I'm sure most people here have a normal HBC despite running games off the USB.

If you can install BootMii as boot2, then there is a small risk. Otherwise there is none. You won't lose homebrew, but Nintendo's code that updates boot2 is slightly buggy regardless of whetehr you have homebrew or not.

It's caused when the IOS that the HBC runs with has been patched. There is absolutely no reason to patch any Nintendo IOS, but idiot pirates write code that does it anyway, 'just in case'.

I just spent the better part of a few hours trying to set up my Wii with HDD support, and I got the Homebrew channel installed as well as ran DOP-Mii V12 but then I ran into a wall with cIOS38r17, every time I run it it always gives me Install Error -1035, any advice?

Oh I also ran the Trucha Bug Restorer and followed the Wiki for that.

Sorry for a question that's bound to have been asked, but I've tried reading the last few pages of this thread and damnit, I understand about none of it!

I want to play SMG2, obviously, and haven't used my Wii in months. It has the Homebrew Channel (1.0.6) etc on it, and is currently 4.0U. How do I update it to the latest firmware, assuming SMG2 won't work on 4.0U?

I had a look at the wiki, but it was unclear on whether just doing an official update is a good idea. The official update would be ideal if it's OK, tbh I don't care if it deletes the Homebrew Channel, I barely use it anyway, I just don't need a brick with Galaxy 2 on the way!

Help much appreciated.

I tried to make it so that you would probably pick Method 1 of the upgrade page if you were undecided.

Please explain exactly what you found unclear as confusion is the last thing I want to create via that page.

S'alright, I think I've got it enough to give it a go now, it is indeed a very helpful page.

The confusion I guess comes from the fact that it says there's a small risk with the official 4.2 update from Nintendo (whether you have homebrew or not) but then goes on to recommend it as the best option for updating. So I wasn't sure if there was a risk or not.

Ah, I see. I'll change that up a bit. PART 1 of the upgrade removes the risky bit.

Alright, well BootMii is in boot2. Should I uninstall that before I update or just update anyway? I mean, you say it'll have a chance to brick me either way so... *throws coin?* So long as it keeps the HBC I'm fine with it.

So I don't know if this is a fixable issue or not, but I've been getting a lot of "Exception (DSI) occurred!" messages when selecting or attempting to start a game in cfg. It doesn't happen consistently, nor does it seem to be related to any particular game. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't. I just have to keep powering down the Wii and retrying until I can get it to do what I want. I'm running version 56 of the loader and loading the games from a FAT formatted HDD using ios222.

So, um, I guess...help? If possible?

I'm stunned Galaxy 2 doesn't have anti-piracy tricks. Literally, I'm shocked. There has to be something the hackers haven't encountered yet or something, there has to be. :lol

Couldn't Nintendo just include a line of code that wipes out your homebrew when you reach a certain Galaxy? :lol

Think about it. You can't really get around that.
