GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Thanks a ton Clipper, I honestly appreciate your time and effort.

edit:

If BootMii is installed as boot2, you can make BootMii autoboot to the system menu or Homebrew Channel after a specified number of seconds of inactivity by altering sd:/bootmii/bootmii.ini by adding or changing the following lines (in particular, note the lack of the # character):

* AUTOBOOT=HBC (or SYSMENU)
* BOOTDELAY=5 (or any other number)

Fucking perfect. I don't know how I skimmed over this, you are the man!!!!!

Now to convince my wife we need a black wii....I'm even selling stuff to go TOWARDS the purchase jajajaj

With some themes (not sure if it works with all) you can change the layout of your games by pressing either up or down on the d-pad (can't remember which). It cycles through various layouts.

It's on the USB Loader page during the installation steps.

We really need to update that theme, it uses the old GAF logo and is a bit bland. The previous person who was going to undertake the creation of a new theme got permabanned (for something completely unrelated), so any other takers?

Is there anyway to get Configurable USB Loader to display the games as their Channel Icons (so, simulate the Wii Channel view) instead of showing their Boxart?

This can 1)save me from downloading them and 2)satisfy my personal preference.
If not Configurable USB Loader, do any other USB Loaders do this? It seems like a no brainer since the data is already there.

I whipped this up really quickly - I borrowed the background from another theme (grabbed it for sizing purposes since the gaf theme's wide seemed off. Ended up liking that background more than the one I made...)

Anyway here - EDIT: Posted an updated/corrected version below.

anyone using ftpii on windows 7? I followed the instructions and I'm using the firefox ftp plugin but nothing works. On the wii it says I connected, but then it just disconnects.

I was trying to set this up earlier today and it didn't work. Apparently there is some kind of compatibility issue with the newest version and we need to wait for 0.22.

is there a wii bricking risk while updating to 4.3 like with the 4.2 upgrade ?
Yes. The same risk is there, unless you already updated boot2 via NSMB Wii or the 4.2 update. The risk is the same whether you have homebrew or not, but it is extremely small. You can totally avoid the risk by upgrading in the method outlined in the tutorial.

No, it's not done yet as we don't have access to the animation commands the Wii uses and coding up animation for that file format would take a lot of work.

Thanks. It looks pretty good. I'll add it to the tutorial soon.

Hmmm, what's this?
You can update the boot2 to v4 without killing the ability to install BootMii to boot2?
And later Nintendo updates recognize it as legit and don't attempt to overwrite it with their BootMii-killing version?

Yes.

boot2v4 was never the thing which stopped you installing BootMii. What determines that is the version of boot1 that you have. If your boot1 is vulnerable, you can install BootMii. If not, you can't. It just so happens that all Wiis that they fixed the bug in boot1 at the same time as they made boot2v4. Thus, if your Wii shipped with boot2v4, your boot1 is not vulnerable and you can't install BootMii. Also, Nintendo cannot update boot1, so early Wiis will always have BootMii.

The potential brick issue is also only on those Wiis which shipped with a vulnerable boot1. They are the only ones that update boot2 and it is that update which has the slight element of danger. Once you have done the update to boot2v4, either by upgrading with Dop-Mii, NSMB Wii, or a 4.2 or higher update you are then safe (except if they do a boot2v5, which is useless).

Huh. I could have SWORN that Nintendo had released a BootMii (as boot2) killing update at some point. Weird. I've been specifically holding off on updating my boot2 for that very reason.

I guess I'll go ahead and do that update now.
Thanks for clarifying.

It must be some way to reinstall 249/202 after the 4.3 update, and avoid Other M trying to stub them without starpatch. The 4.2 safe update didn't need starpatch to disable updates =(

Well,

Black Wii get, hbc installed (thanks alot clipper!) and I'm running a nand dump now.

I noticed bootmii could only be installed as an IOS and not as boot2. To be honest, I don't even know what this does for me, I do remember the original wii we have is installed as boot2.

In any event, I'm going to start working on getting cfg setup.

Thanks alot for the wiki and everyone's time. It's very much appreciated.

Now, if we had something like "The following things could brick your wii...." :lol

Here's an updated version - I corrected the location of the NeoGAF logo - it was getting clipped on my TV. Sorry I uploaded it before testing.

Here's the updated version: http://www.mediafire.com/?5of795r8bv90t1u

I will edit out the old link to prevent confusion.

Here's a preview for those who don't wanna download it to find out what it looks like:

Installing boot2v4 on the Wiis that get updated does delete BootMii as boot2, but you can just reinstall it afterwards. A lot of headless chickens didn't understand this and spread the misinformation that it blocked BootMii. I guess you never saw the corrections.

OK, firstly, it's StartPatch, not StarPatch (this typo is just too frequent, probably because of Starfall). Secondly, the 4.2 Safe Update did need you to block updates afterwards. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and other games with the 4.2 update would still request to update if you had reinstalled the cIOSes after updating to 4.2. It's no different now with Other M's 4.3+Korean IOS update.

I dont like to use it because my wii sounds like printing something :lol
Almost all Wiis sound like they are printing something when they read dual layer discs. It is normal and not a sign that the Wii is dying.

If I go out tomorrow and buy a black Wii, would I be able to install the Homebrew Channel or would the firmware be too new?

You would possibly need to own a certain game to get started, but you will be able to install the HBC, unless the Wii is both on 4.3 and from the Korean region. Click Mario above for all the info.

So I've got a fully updated HBC, have boot2v4, am on 4.2, etc.

If I do the Metroid update, it'll wipe my IOS thingies that I need to do stuff, but I can then reinstall those? But then Metroid will continue to want to update?

So is it like some vicious cycle each time I want to play Metroid?
(I don't have StartPatch / Priiloader / etc. to block disc updates.)

Yes.

If you insist on playing Other M from the disc, then it is a vicious cycle unless you use StartPatch. However, Other M works fine from the drive, so there really is no reason to use the disc once you have ripped it.

Will I be able to install the Start Patch software.

At the moment I use Geko OS. only - NO Start Patch/All installed whatsoever

Currentl sytem Menu is 4.1 - Japan release Black wii.

HBC version 1.0.6

The new HBC has a "Launch BootMii" option when you press the home button.
I tried it even if i don't have BootMii installed and all i get is a black screen and the Wii blue led flashes.

Is this a kind way to tell me that i should get BootMii because the HBC and it are supposed to work together or can i continue using the HBC without it?

I have followed the guide to a T, and it's made this very, very easy.

Current situation, running 59 249 frag my existing WBFS drive loads and everything is peachy.

When i try to use My 320gb WD passport (it has a xbox 360 16gb partition on it) it CFG just hangs. I thought it might be the version so I upped to 60 v222, now when i try to load I just loop back to the system menu.

Any ideas? I apologize if I did not provide enough detail in my post. If I need to, I'll just split the drive and keep using WBFS if I have to.

Thanks again guys!!!!

yes. you never know what can happen so having a bootmii backup is important.

And is there another link I can DL IOS236 Installer v3? I don't want to do this damn survey. :(

umm, what survey? did you select an option while installing 236 that you shouldn't have?

The new HBC installs BootMii as an IOS as part of it's new installation routine. If you had ever installed it as an IOS before, it would have shown up on the old HBC too. The reason why it black screens is probably that you don't have the necessary files on your SD. You can get those files by choosing to prepare an SD card for BootMii using the Hackmii installer if you want. It's not really necessary, though.

It's possible you got a courrupt download. Check boot.dol to see if it is 0B. If it is, copy the boot.dol.bak over boot.dol and then try the upgrade again. Also, do you have IOS222 installed?

A BootMii backup is handy, but if you aren't going to do anything stupid, and thus stick to stuff that you get from either the tutorial or the Homebrew Browser, then you won't ever brick the Wii so won't need the backup.

And also, yes, what survey?

Yea thanks for the info! Very much apperciated. And thanks for this tutorial it is really great.

My friend used USB Loader GX. Is that a GAF approved USB loader or is it looked down on? And if it is ok; does this tutorial allow me to install GX instead of the default tutorial one?

Thanks for the help... :)

USBloader GX is not recommended by the tutorial. The one recommended is Configurably USB loader, which is maintained by Clipper himself. I'd use that one, it gets updated frequently and runs well.

So I have an NTFS formatted external drive... is there anyway to make a part of it usable on the Wii but still keep the rest as NTFS? Also, can this be done without erasing the data that's already on it?

Thank you. I'll do that.

One last question I think... is it necessary that I have a partition on my Ext HDD?

Start Patch dont work for me .

ES_Init...Done

ES_Identify ( as SU )Error -1017

Return to loader.

First of all I installed Bootmii and made a NAND back up.

Then updated HBC to latest version.

Installed IOS 236.

I used the correct Start Patch file 4.1 Japan.

The newest version of Configurable USB lets you write directly to NTFS. I haven't tried it since I have my entire drive as a FAT partition but Clipper can explain it more.

Really? So I can simply use the drive as it is now? O_O

Ugh I think I'm done, this is too much. Stuck on this step:
http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader

(My wii is 4.3 - but HBC is loaded using the Brawl exploit)
I renamed the the cfg59-222.dol file to boot.dol and replaced the file, which results to: the error "IOS 222 is a stub!" when I boot up configUSBLoader from the HBC.

If I don't replace the boot file it works, but when I connect my HDD it freezes at the start page.

My HDD is 1TB Fat32 - and it is new so there are no partitions on it. Is it neccasary to put a partition on it? I'm also using this HDD as my backup for Real Life Photos/videos...

Any help would be nice. You guys have been very helpful, thanks!

According to the discussion of StartPatch on the Wiibrew Wiki:
Error -1017

If you're getting this error, you need a trucha-signed IOS36 (<v4.2.4), or whatever IOS you selected to use (v4.2.4+) — TiMeBoMb 20:21, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
So yeah its either update to newer firmware (and so use newer StartPatch) or downgrade IOS36 to a version with the fakesign bug. The GWHT StartPatch page (well Avoid Disc Updates but it uses StartPatcxh) says the following in its FAQ:
GWHT said:
This isn't working for me.
It seems some versions of StartPatch no longer work. 4.0U in particular has failed to work for some people. In this case, the best plan of attack seems to be to upgrade to 4.2 safely and then use the 4.2U version of StartPatch.
