GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I eventually just said "f" it and formatted the drive as wbfs. Copying games from the other hdd to this one doesn't work for some reason using wbfs browser. It says that it works, and they show up in the app but the wii does not see them.

No matter, I'll just rip from dvd again and avoid all this frustration.

StartPatch - is this dangerous for a bootmii ios user? It looks like it could be awesome!

Ugh I think I'm done, this is too much. Stuck on this step:
http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader

(My wii is 4.3 - but HBC is loaded using the Brawl exploit)
I renamed the the cfg59-222.dol file to boot.dol and replaced the file, which results to: the error "IOS 222 is a stub!" when I boot up configUSBLoader from the HBC.

If I don't replace the boot file it works, but when I connect my HDD it freezes at the start page.

My HDD is 1TB Fat32 - and it is new so there are no partitions on it. Is it neccasary to put a partition on it? I'm also using this HDD as my backup for Real Life Photos/videos...

Any help would be nice. You guys have been very helpful, thanks!
Did you install IOS222? Did you try the plain version of Cfg first (it should work better)?

There's no need to partition if it's FAT32.

I did install 222-223. And if by plain version you mean not changing the .DOL I did do that, but it would stay at the CFG Splash screen for too long (have to turn off the console).

I'm glad I don't have to partition it though, phew. Thanks!

Install IOS222 again. It sounds like something went wrong.

Ok! Thank you. I'll try that!

During the installation of 222 it says:
"Select IOS236 to perform the install with D-pad left/right and push A
If you don't have IOS236, then pay more attention to the "What you should install first" section above."

I can't select IOS236 to perform the install... and I install IOS236 twice. Am I missing something?

What button did you push at the question for Step 2 of the IOS236 install?

You mean the piracy question? I pushed 2 (I think) the one that says I don't need the piracy option. Should I push 1 for piracy yes?

Also, I don't really get what any of this means:
"What are the difference between the 222 (e.g., cfg55-222.dol) and the 249 (e.g. cfg55.dol) versions?
The first IOS that is loaded is IOS222 instead of IOS249 (this is before config.txt is read)
The ios option has a default of 222-mload instead of 249."

So... which DOL should I use?

I got into the Configurable USBLoader with my ext HDD connected (no freezing) and it says invalid partition fat 1. And asks me to select a different partition and gives me a list, but it wont let me select anything I press A on a partition and it doesnt select it. Just sits there.

You chose wisely.

Cfg does not support ext partitions.

You will need to create a new partition on the drive or format the current partition to either FAT32 or NTFS.

If you want to use NTFS, you must be using v60a or v60a-222 of Cfg and you need to add ntfs_write=1 to config.txt.

As for your restarting question, feel free to do any of the steps again. However, I don't think you'll need to.

But I don't get it my ext hdd is FAT32. And I don't have a DVD burner so I can't do that tutorial on how to partition my ext hdd...

http://gwht.wikidot.com/gparted
Ah. Sorry. Got confused. There's partition formats called ext2 and ext3, so you really shouldn't use "ext" as short for external in this context :D.

If the drive has no important data, try running this tool to reformat it as FAT32 again. If that doesn't work, then your drive may just be incompatible. Try with both current versions of Cfg (60a and 60a-222) just in case.

Thanks! But I throw in the towel. This aint working out...

:( Maybe I'll pay my friend to do it for me. Thanks for everyones help though. Sorry for all my posts on this page!

Damn, why can't it be easy like the iPhone "Slide to jailbreak!". Heh.

Ok, I've been going crazy trying to figure this out, so hopefully someone here can help.

I installed Triiforce so I could play my Wiiware and VC games on my usb hard drive and I did the fs dump from the Wii nand and copied it to the hard drive. Booted up Triiforce but it couldn't find my games. Then I googled it and found out I needed cios38. I installed that and everything worked great.

Then I tried playing SMG2 off of the hard drive on configurable usb loader and got the message that I needed cios249. It worked before so I guess the cios38 overrode it? So I reinstalled that and SMG2 worked fine. But then I went back to Triiforce and the games that were there before were gone.

So how do I get cios38 and cios249 on the Wii together? I'm on 4.2U.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well I think I am just stick with Geko OS for the time being I am not confident messing about with things I dont understand, I am half suprised I aint bricked the wii yet as it is.

Hope the Start Patch development continues.

If you following all the instructions it should only take about an hour of your time. Also, once you're done you'll have the experience necessary for whatever possible homebrew updates come out in the future. You're essentially throwing your money away by paying someone for this AND you're doing yourself a disservice. But, hey, that's just my opinion, man.

Agreed. It's the aspect of hacking a console I enjoy most: figuring it out myself.

Yea it was fun till the very end. When I was almost done but my HDD kept getting denied and it would not let me choose a partition. I'll probably just wait till I get a smaller external HDD that doesn't need a power cord.

will i need to update to 4.3 before being able to play Metroid: Other M off my USB Drive? Or am i good to go without updating from 4.2 if i tell it it ignore on disc updates?

It works fine off a USB HDD and won't prompt for updates if you play it that way. Just be prepared for a 45-50 minute install. :lol

Shouldn't take that long. Was only half an hour here.

I've seen and experienced conflicting reports with it. It took me 45m, I've seen other forum posts saying it took that long, then others, such as yourself, have stated it only took half an hour or so. It probably just varies based on the HDD itself, because I'm using the 80GB that used to be in my PS3 and put it into an enclosure. I didn't remember Brawl taking that long, and it was a dual-layered game as well.

Maybe it has to do with the age of the Wii itself, barring dying lasers and such?

Took me around 50 minutes as well to rip Metroid: Other M to my HDD (I have a launch Wii, if that matters). I remember Brawl didn't take me that long (around 35 minutes if I remember correctly).

Install time is based around several factors, including which IOS you are using to perform the rip and what base that IOS is. Your drive may also be a limiting factor.

I tried using ntfs write, but if I add the comand to the config.text, it doesn't recognise my hd....
Any hint???
You added "ntfs_write=1" (no quotes) to config.txt and you had v60a or v60a-222 of Cfg installed? And what do you mean by "doesn't recognise"? Did the 30 second countdown start?

Fuzzy said:
The newest version of Configurable USB lets you write directly to NTFS. I haven't tried it since I have my entire drive as a FAT partition but Clipper can explain it more.

So does anyone know anything more about this? I'd really love to install my games to my external NTFS HDD :)

edit: Sorry I missed your previous post Clipper! Do I need a separate partition for Wii games or can I simply use the existing one (I only have one partition)?

Okay I'm trying to work out how to get my NTFS drive to work... I added

ntfs_write=1
partition = [NTFS1]
partition=NTFS1

to config.txt, but the loader says it can't find that drive. What did I do wrong?

edit: changed the text to the correct formatting... installing SMG2 as we speak, seems to take less than 15 mins :D

So I purchased a new external HDD today and am running into some issues:

*Created a new partition, used an old USBloader to backup SMG2 and then installed the updated USBloader and played it with no problem.
* I wanted to add some files on my PC to the HDD but it hadn't been formatted so I did just that, knowing it would erase the SMG2 files.
* Tried to back up the SMG2 again using the USBloader but it needed to be FAT, so I changed the partition to FAT.
* Went and backed up SMG2 using the updated USBloader but it wouldn't play the game, saying my IOS is old and to update beyong IOS249.

My question is which IOS do I need to install to have the games work?

Fuck yeah my HDD is up and running a few games (currently installed SMG2, RE4 and Harvest Moon) :D I'm using the NXE theme for now since it seems to be the most clean and simple one I could find that wasn't black or grey. Looks soooo awesome!

One question though: I can't seem to change the default browsing method with the config.txt command that is supposed to work, that is

gui_style=coverflow2D

it still defaults to the grid view :/ Does anyone know how to fix it?

Oh and question nr 2: How do you remove the game text under the games? I don't need it to say "Super Mario Galaxy 2", I can already see the cover!

gui_style is one of the options saved with global settings to settings.cfg. The version of the option there has priority over config.txt.

To hide the text in the GUI, set the text color to fully transparent. E.g.:
gui_text_shadow = 00
gui_text2_outline = 00
gui_text2_shadow = 00
gui_text_outline = 00
gui_text_color = 00000000
gui_text2_color = 00000000

I have never been able to get my copy of Excite Truck to work from USB for some reason. It always gets stuck on the "loading" screen on boot up.

It's weird because the game works perfectly fine when I play it from disk, but doesn't work when I dump it to the hard drive

i found that instead of going into notepad you just choose the view you want in CFG, press 2 twice (global options) then press the button to save (1 or 2, don't remember)

Which cIOS version do you have installed? I seem to remember the first one that added SD support kind of broke Excite Truck as Excite Truck also supports the SD card (for MP3 playlist). So I'd say try updating your cIOS to the newest version.

Thank you Gaf! The guide worked splendidly in me getting my old PS3 40GB HDD installed on my Wii. Just installed my copy of SMG2 (which I've already beaten, but hey...), and... It's so lovely.

WARNING: There's a new update out according to a message I just got on my Wii. I'm looking further into it now. Not sure if it's 4.4, or just the Other M 4.3+ update yet.

Edit: OK, it's the 4.3+ update. Nothing to worry about. The current tutorial already bypasses the method they just blocked.

It does come with a new shop channel, so time to update the shop, people.

I came to post this, Clip's already on the case.

I'm trying to update the shop (with IOS249), but it keeps saying "hash BAD" and exiting.
Should I reinstall IOS236 and try that, then reinstall IOS249?

Was this the extra one that came with Metroid: Other M?

SO how bout those Hexen/Heretic ports? Is it possible to change the controls or add the music back to them? As it stands, the default controls are kinda terrible.

Having a problem with WiiShop Channel, I'm trying to download the WiiSpeak Channel through my download ticket, but it appear an error "206613"

"There's not program available for this Wii download ticket, at this time. Check your ticket number."

Mine comes in a bundle with Blue World, it was sealed, what could be the problem, maybe the HBC thing?

According to Nintendo Error 206613 is a catch-all error for temporary problems with the Wii Shop channel. They suggest waiting a few hours and trying again.

I tried to find an answer and got this searching the thread:

I think I have discovered the issue which causes the Hash Bad error. IOS249 rev20 base56 seems that it might not support unsigned IOS downloads fully. I was helping someone softmod a Wii today and discovered the issue for myself. And for some reason, Dop-Shop wouldn't let me choose IOS236 (I used 222). I'll do some more research into this soon.
I can't remember the solution.

Well thanks for the info that it happened to someone else (I also couldn't select IOS 236).

I ended up trying Dop-Mii now, and that installed it just fine. So everything is good now!

Will try later then, thanks SW.
Another question: How do I disable Startpatch patches?

EDIT: NVM, the intructions at the botton of the screen appear cut off on my TV =P

I think you press B instead of A.

I just checked the source for DOP-Shop and the IOSes it chooses from are fixed, unlike with almost every other app. That's why you can't choose 236, so I changed the instructions back to using IOS222.

The Hash Bad error is actually caused by using an IOS based on one of the newer IOSes Nintendo released. You have to use the older ones to avoid it.

I followed the Dop-Mii instructions to update the Shop Channel and when it finished installing i tried to use the Shop Channel but i keep getting Error #002 HALP!

Yep, same issue here. DOP-Mii actually didn't ask me which version I wanted to install. It (correctly) reported that I was running v19, and after the update, it reported it as version 20. But I get a blue screen with large letters indicating a 002 error when I try to run the shop channel. I think I'll try the other method in a bit.

We're anywhere from a few weeks to a few months away from at least a beta version of a GCN USB HDD Loader. I'm avidly anticipating that one.
