GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Yeah - install cIOS rev10 before you do anything.

Are you on 3.3v1 or 3.3v2 (pre-Oct 23/08 or post-Oct 23/08)? They both show up as the same firmware on your Wii system settings, so it is difficult to know which version of 3.3 you have. If you have 3.3v1 then it will be really easy to update. If you are on 3.3v2, then some extra steps will be necessary.

Anyway, get waninkoko's cIOS rev10 and try to install it. If it won't install, then you are on 3.3v2. If it does install properly, then you are on 3.3v1, and just follow these next few steps.

- Install 'cIOS rev10'
- Update your Wii to 4.0 using Nintendo's official updater from your system settings
- Run 'IOS Downgrader' (this will revert many IOS files back to earlier versions that still have the trucha bug - just make sure to run 'IOS Downgrader' and not 'cIOS Downgrader')
- you can now follow my earlier instructions for installing USB2.0 cIOS (beta3) and installing IOS202, and then running the pre-3.4 version of the DVDx installer and using the 'Advanced' option in order to set DVDx to run off of IOS202. That way it will work with MPlayer.

Okay I did the first two steps. Where do I get IOS Downgrader? And the USB2.0 cIOS and IOS202?

I just installed Bootmii as boot2 but I dont think I installed it right. I prepared the SD card, installed as boot2 and I dont get the Bootmii menu. I have /bootmii/ directory on my sd card and armboot.bin, bootmii.ini and ppcboot.elf. Did I do something wrong?

Going back to Hackmii installer gives me an option to uninstall bootmii as boot2

When I boot up my Wii, I see my disc slot turn blue for like a millisecond then just loads the system menu.

BootMii as boot2 is installed, it just can't recognise your SD card. Try copying the boomii folder onto another card.

try a different SD card, that should fix it.

That's the same bug I'm getting. Oggzee is trying to sort it out. I think it's related to having both a partitioned drive and using the ios option in config.txt.

IOS Downgrader - Link

And here - Link - is a good guide (with necessary links) for getting the USB2.0-cIOS (IOS202) installed. Just remember that you have to use the pre-Oct 23 version of DVDx in order to get the 'Advanced' option that you need to set it to IOS202.

When I run that IOS Downgrader it just seems to reset my Wii and goes back to the Health and Safety Warning.

Hmm... It should have shown you onscreen the list of each IOS file as it was downgrading each file.

You did install waninkoko's cIOS36 rev10 before updating to 4.0, right?

So I have a new interesting issue with my Wii. I was prompted to update my HBC and did so. Hackmii autoran and said I was able to do things like Bootmii and so on, so I said what the fuck and installed it with no problems to my Boot 2 or whatever. I turned off my wii after all that was said and done and when I turn it back on at the BootMii menu....my controller won't sync to my system anymore so I can't do a damn thing....

I think you can only use corded GC controllers for now.

Bootmii doesn't currently support the Wiimote. Use a GCN controller or the Wii's buttons (power, reset, eject, etc.) to navigate.

Also, what you should do, is pop that SD card into your computer or card reader, open it up in Windows Explorer, navigate to the new bootmii folder that should be on the root of the card, and edit the bootmii.ini (or whatever it's called) file so that it'll autolaunch the Wii's normal System Menu if no button (console or GCN) is pressed within 2 seconds.

Oh, thank god!! I was trying my wavebird too and was freaking out because that wasn't working either. What do I have to do to make it do the 2 second thing?

I haven't installed bootmii yet (waiting for a finalized version), but I believe the wii remote cannot be used to navigate the bootmii menu.
You have to either use a gamecube controller, or use the power, reset and eject buttons to navigate the menu.

Edit: What Mejilan said.

Check the readme file. There's an option you need to add. Alternatively, change the name of the BootMii folder on your SD card and the Wii will boot normally.

Anyone have issues using any of waninkokos updates right now? I keep getting a Exception DSI when I connect. Is it due to increased network load?

I thought I installed it via some WAD installer, I recall something where I had to choose IOS36.

If I wanted to, is there any way I could get rid of every trace of homebrew from my system (cIOS and all)?
The only way would be to do a complete system reset. I don't know what app you need to do it, though. Even then, there'd be traces that could show you'd been doing something weird (timestamps and the like). You might want to use AnyTitleDeleter to uninstall all the extra channels, but be very careful, it is supposedly very dangerous to use if you don't know what you are changing.

It sounds like you aren't sure if you installed it or not. When you said that you had completed the first two steps, I assumed that you had just now installed cIOS36 rev10 and that it went successfully. That would have meant that you were on 3.3v1, and the following steps that I gave you should work fine.

It is hard to know how to tell you to proceed without knowing if you have cIOS installed or not.

Have you already updated to 4.0, or are you still on 3.3? (If you haven't updated yet, then don't do it until we figure out if you have cIOS installed or not)

What version of HBC are you currently running? 1.0.2 had some weird errors where certain SD cards wouldn't work properly for some reason. So that might be a possibility if you do actually have cIOS already installed.

uhh, I think you can. And I mean if you cant, whats the worse that can happen? the game is on an HDD and not the wii. Also the USBLoaders block all updates, so you dont have to worry about that. if it doesnt work you can always remove it :).

yes, I am running a couple pal game on my NTSC wii. You just need to go into the loader settings and force pal....or there was another option but I cant remember what it was, hmpf..it's the one i'm using too
You don't even need to force PAL. The default options should work fine, unless you need to display in 576i. If it's a Japanese NTSC game, you probably want to turn the VIDTV patch on to get the characters displaying correctly.

nah, the default settings didnt work

I hope I don't incur anyone's wrath but I think I have a dumb question as to whether or not I can install the USB loader on my Wii.

I've installed every update Nintendo has pushed down the pipe. Today, I successfully installed the homebrew channel using BannerBomb. When I ran the ciosrev10 installer I got an error message right at the end. And the Ultimate Boot Loader doesn't work.

Now, I've read this thread (and a bunch of other sites) all day but I'm still confused (sorry!) - If I've got a never before hacked Wii is it possible to successfully install the usb loader app?

In HBC it says that I'm on 1.0.3 and it's on IOS61 v19.26.

Unfortunately I was reading a bunch of different guides and think I got mixed up somewhere along the way. I'm on 4.0 right now too, I think that makes things more difficult.

For all those using BootMii, they just updated the FAQ. It is a good read and discusses most of the problems people are having here.

One thing to note: Wii Remote support is not coming any time soon.

So no one? no issues at all with waninkokos updates/downgraders? I tried now thinking the network would be easier to access and bam all I still get is Exception DSI dumps.

I won't be online for a while, but I'll try to help you out some more later.

For now, try downloading and running AnyTitleDeleter - Link

This AnyTitleDeleter app will only run if you have the trucha bug in the early IOS files, so this will let us know whether or not 'IOS Downgrader' worked when you tried it before.

If AnyTitleDeleter runs for you, then 'IOS Downgrader' worked, and all is well, and you can go ahead and install USB2-cIOS and DVDx.

If AnyTitleDeleter will not run for you, then 'IOS Downgrader' did not work, which probably means that you didn't have cIOS rev10 installed before you updated to 4.0. In this case, things get a lot more complicated.

But for now, let's just try to run AnyTitleDeleter and see what happens. Just be careful though. If this program does run for you - don't do anything once you get inside the program. You can delete some important system files with this app. So if it does run for you, then just press the 'Home' button on the Wiimote to exit the app.

Let me know how it goes.

Got a enclosure for my 60GB sata drive to use on USBloader (installed the config one) but I can't get usbloader to find it, keeps coming up with Error Ret = -1 after a count down to 30. Mind you I can't even get the hard drive to show up on the PC (despite is saying it's installed and ready) so it's probably the fault of the enclosure.

This was the drive out of a PS3, right? It might not be partitioned nicely. Try partitioning the drive using a GParted Live CD or other partitioning tool. Delete whatever partitions are on there and recreate a new one, but leave it unformatted. It must be a primary (not logical) partition.

I'm not sure if this is a harddrive thing or a disc thing, but I thought it would be safer to ask here

I started replaying Twilight Princess after installing it to my HDD and got to the twilight realm part. When things are particularly "bloomy", the system starts freaking out and turns the whole screen to a flickering black. You can still move around and perform actions, but nothing beyond that.

Is it a bad install or what?

Linux? Um...I have no idea what any of that site is going on about. I would format the drive if I could get it to even show up on my PC yet. Need tio find out how I can format this previously used in a PS3 hard drive, I'll look about for something less...linux-y.

EDIT: Right I've got the drive showing up now, it just wants me to format it but will only let me do it as NTFS. Should I just leave it unformatted? The enclosure says on it that the drive must be FAT32 for it to work in it.

G-Parted Live is not really linuxy... You put the CD in you (powered off) PC, you turn it on, and you get an application similar to Partition magic (but Free).

Partitionning and formatting with it is easy (just don't wipe your PC partitions ;) ). It's a graphical application really similar to the one you can find on Windows.

Once finished, you quit the application, and the computer turn off. Remove the CD and it's finished. You won't have to deal with Linux at all.

It's a really wonderful tool for this kind of stuff. Highly recommanded.

Edit : if you really don't want to play with it, there's a partition manager inside Windows, which could do what you want, except I'm not sure you can do partitionning without formatting, and I'm pretty sure you can't create a single Fat32 partition of 60GB, which is utterly inconvinient. But if you prefer this solution, it's hidden among the administrator tools in the configuration panel.

Ah right, I'll give it a shot. I managed to make a partition for the hard drive through computer management though it's in NTFS and the enclosure only accepts FAT32 for some reason. Will using this let me convert it to FAT32?

EDIT: That program worked a treat, the hard drive is now FAT32 but USBloader still keeps counting to 30 then giving me 'error ret -1', and it even says it when I try to mount to SD card, so I have no idea.

Waninkoko's cIOS rev 12 is apparently out, although I can't get to Waninkoko's site to get it. This should be an alternative to get other devices working than IOS 222/223.

Edit: Get it here. Use Stump's tutorial (big flashy text) if you don't know how to use this.

Edit 2: This is pretty good so far. Fixes a drive bug that IOS222/223 didn't even fix. Works perfectly with Configurable. It's great.

Did you ensure the partition is a primary partition? Go back into GParted and delete the partition, then create a new partition as primary and Unformatted. That will be your best bet to getting USB Loader to recognise it. USB Loader is going to format the drive to WBFS, so hopefully your enclosure will still work.

You might also want to test Ultimate USB Loader just for the formatting of the drive.

I just installed bootmii and none of my two SD cards work with it. But at least it seems that it installed successfully. Weird that Kingston cards don't work with it.

EDIT: Ok I found an old 128MB SD card I had. Works fine. Currently backing up my NAND to one of the cards that I couldn't boot with.

So if I understand this correctly, backing up your NAND means that even if your Wii dies you can put this NAND backup on another Wii and re-download VC/Wiiware games again?

You can only use the NAND back-up on the same Wii. Even if you brick your Wii, BootMii should still be able to boot. so you can restore your NAND.

Tried all this just now, also updated to that new revision of cIOS and still keep getting that ret -1 message, wherever I pick hard drive or SD card. I think I may just give up, I've tried everything i can think of. ;_;

Can somebody link me to a post(s) or a guide that will help me upgrade my 3.2U to 4.0 while keeping Homebrew, ability to purchase VC/WiiWare etc without the need of Twilight Princess.
