GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

you'll probably need to develop some kind of patch for the ISO if you want to play MPT normally without a disk.

Cfg v44b4 is out and now the banner sounds work for all games that have one. It also allows you to change the font of the clock which shows up in the GUI when you don't point at the screen for a while.

Use the latest version of my Configurator to generate your own clock fonts, or you can test with this one if you want a digital clock. Just download the font_clock.png file and save it in either your base directory (typically sd:/usb-loader, check the Global Options by pushing 1 twice to be sure) or your theme directory.

Actually, no. There is no known way to play the game normally without a disc.

so I put Guitar Hero 5 in my disc tray and the picture changed to a Wii System Update icon. Does anyone know anything about this? Is this update safe?

As long as the disc is from the same region as your system, yes it's safe.

My wii is back from repairs now after a long hiatus (my wii seems brand new too, they replaced almost all the parts :D ). I want to get back into the homebrew scene but I am weary of installing stuff on my Wii. I need to get more info on the thing I read about booting stuff off sd cards, can someone link me to it?

There's a link further up on this page. click the pic of mario.

This might be a silly question, but in terms of starting from scratch, is it safer to buy a new or used Wii?

What I mean is what are the chances of it already having something on it?

I must be doing something wrong...I think I tried all the bootmii versions... :-/
Should only the private directory and the boot.elf be in SD:/ and leave the hackmii folder on the desktop or something?

EDIT: nvm, i needed to update to version 4.1 of firmware.

By updating and formatting a used system, then you can pretty much do anything. You just want to make sure that the seller doesn't have a semi-brick. Make it a condition of purchase that you have to be able to access the Wii settings menu.

Guys 4.2 is out and it's bad...

Version 4.2 of the System Menu was released on September 28, 2009. It currently removes the Homebrew Channel, BootMii, all cIOS versions, and BaNNeRBoMB.

It also updates all the IOS and adds new ones.

Hmm, I wonder. Does it remove Bootmii from the Boot2, or only the IOS version?
Because if the Boot2 version persists, then that might (should?) be the way to get all homebrew up and running again...

There are changes to the boot2 in the 4.2 update supposedly. So that would mean the end for bootmii.

Phwoar. Time to update the tutorial! So Indiana Pwns is still active, I guess. Watch for there to be huge sales on Lego Indiana Jones in a few days!

holy shit i almost updated a half hour ago. so glad i didnt.

im sure a way around this will be found but wow never expected nintendo to go hardcore on the piracy thing like this.

But from what I'm reading, cIOS250 was not and cannot be overwritten? So seemingly, those of us with a relatively modern Waninkoko cIOS installed should still have a back door.

I wonder if Nintendo patched the Lego Indy Jones and SSBB exploits. Because if not, then most of their efforts here can probably be undone.

I just ordered all the copies from one store, for eBay potential.

You know, I couldn't care less about the USB Loader. It's nice to have, but not having it is definitely not a problem for me.

However, mess with my IMPORTS?!?!?!?!?

That's personal. I already have Disaster & Another Code on the way!

My guess is the USB loaders got their attention.

Probably about time, in all honesty!
Still, I fully suspect that that 4.2 will quickly be defeated.
If nothing else, I'm pretty damn sure that Team Twiizers has a few tricks left up their sleeves. They would not have released the Lego Indy Jones exploit if that were the last card in their hand.

there's a new update?

let's hope nintendo has something new in the firmware

edit: nevermind, it DELETES the homebrew channel apparently

i wish nintendo would work on some decent firmware updates that puts some more usability

If they'd only remove region locks there would be far less reason to waste resources on this.

Well, it looks like they added IOS56, IOS57, and that SysMenu 4.2 runs on the brand-new IOS70.

Not sure what BENEFIT that gives the end-user... probably none. So far, it seems like this update is heavily slanted towards fixing security issues, not adding features. So far.

Friend says older disc games run ever-so-slightly faster. Can we get a verification on this?

Nintendo has been needing this update for a long time so I'm not surprised but it's obviously a little too late. Still, I hope there is some benefit for us non-homebrewers.

If the Wii had no region locks, I wouldn't bother with HBC at all. I've always got my modchip to fall back on anyway.

It's Nintendo man, there is no benefit.

Oh FUCK, what does this mean for the future of DSi homebrew? I don't want to have to buy a 2nd (or 3rd) system to play my imports.

;_;

It's the first thing I am gonna buy in the morning, you never know...

Thanks for the idea Vook.

Preliminary reports suggest it's locked down tight, more-so than Wii. Nintendo getting serious about security? Maybe.

I'd buy another DSi for VC (especially if shared with Wii) but that's just me. Aside from a few miscellaneous DSiWare I have no reason for a US one.

Team Twiizers are working on hacking the DSi as well (a true DSi-mode exploit, not the older DS-exploits currently in play now). I suspect something will come of it. Eventually.

Eh, 4.0 added substantial benefits, and 4.1 featured a critical bug-fix that certainly counts as a benefit to WM+ users! Granted, that's a bug that shouldn't have existed to begin with, but at least they fixed it (relatively) quickly!

There are currently two methods that may not be blocked. One involves Indiana Pwns. The other apparently only works on NTSC Wiis and needs SSBB (called SmashStack).

BootMii is removed and it is unclear whether HBC can be reinstalled right now (probably needs an update). Hence, it seems the only way you have to run things is by doing the above exploits each time (no thank you).

All cIOS slots used by USB Loaders are overwritten, although it seems IOS250, which is installed when you install IOS249, may have survived. Cfg Loader supports IOS250 so we'll probably know if it still works after the update soon.

The BootMii guys may do something to block the update from deleting BootMii and HBC soon, or to reinstall them post-update. We have to wait and see.

My understanding is that IOSes have internally coded revisions, and the Wii updaters will automatically skip an IOS download if it is determined that the revision already installed is newer than the one it's trying to install. Further, revisions can only go so high (meaning that there is a "max" revision). It seems that when Wanin shadowed cIOS249 as cIOS250, he specifically coded cIOS250 with the highest possible revision. According to the logs I've seen dumped from update 4.2, the IOS250 stub included with 4.2 is lower than that max revision currently applied to cIOS250.

I'm not about to test it on my system, but if all holds true, then Wanin's cIOS250 should survive the update.

Of course, Nintendo could probably rather easily work around this by creating a special IOS250 stub install routine that disregards the internal revisions. It's too soon to tell if they've done just that, however.

What? I just got into to the homebrew scene again today....and I updated today...but the installs still worked...only thing that isnt loading in the homebrew channel is the usb loader for some reason...

Why are people worried? Are people blindly updating their systems?

EDIT: just got the update message O_O. Sorry for the misunderstanding, i updated earlier yesterday (just realized that its past midnight here :3)to 4.1...

Wait a minute, are you sure you are on 4.2?!?!? If so, then we've got conflicting reports! Could you confirm that you have 4.2 for us, your HBC should have been deleted if so.

Damn, just in the nick of time! :lol You are one lucky dude.

Do you know what's gonna suck the most? No more Shop Channel for the time being...
