GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I need help on getting the homebrew channel installed. I have a 4.2E Wii and I follow the instructions on the gaf wiki word for word on how to get the channel working. I should get a 'load boot.elf' prompt when I insert the sd card, but it doesn't pop up. The guide says: 'If not, download other BannerBomb versions from here and try again until one works.'. But I've already downloaded 4 or 5 versions and none of them do anything. I've tried formatting the sd card, but to no avail. Is my only option to keep downloading versions from this link til i get a hit? http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/aads/archive/
Because that could take me a while :/

If I want to use a new SD Card to store HBC files, can I just use a PC to make the swap?

I actually tried it, but my region-free enabler wouldn't start up without the original SD Card.

I'm usually a good boy, honest. This Wii stuff just does my head in.

I ended up just ripping the disc to the HDD so I don't need it. will do that disc blocking thing anyway though.

if it helps, I did the 4.2 upgrade off disc, and it only stopped the USB loader from working. Homebrew channel was still ok, so your guide worked fine just updating IOS249. Didn't use the deleter as it wasn't available from the linked site.
You must have checked the tutorial eariler than you posted as I totally removed AnyTitle Deleter from the site this afternoon. It's no longer mentioned nor needed.

I don't think so.

It seems their link is wrong. You should only use the ones at http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/abds/ for 4.2 installs. If none of the three work, then there is something very strange about your Wii or your method. Make absolutely sure that you are unzipping to the correct directory. Also, try having the SD card in the Wii before clicking the icon (I know the tutorial says not to, but it might work better for that card).

I just dragged the content.bin file to the root of the card, when I should've extracted the zip first.

Now I get an 'unable to mount file system, could not flush log to SD' error after installing the channel and my wii freezes. I googled this and apparently I need a different sd card...

After rebooting my Wii, the hbc is installed though.

It's for that reason that I added "Thus, you should now have a file at sd:/private/wii/title/aktn/content.bin" to the instructions, but I guess not everyone reads it :p.

Don't worry about the mounting file system issue. If HBC is installed then you are all good.

sorry :p

so is it okay to continue using this sd card for other install operations if I got this error?

Yes, it probably just means you can't put a Bootmii backuo on it. Everything else will probably work.

Just a heads up, there was a system update posted today, don't know if affects homebrew at all, but official synopsis of the firmware update on Nintendo's site is as follows:

# Most Recent Update:

June 21, 2010

Wii Menu 4.3

Unauthorized Modifications
Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files. In addition, there are some behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.

Hmm, another worthless update?
Normal rules probably apply.
In other words:
1) Don't update until the new firmware is fully dissected.
2) Don't update until a new HBC/BootMii/etc. are released.
3) Don't be stupid.

;p

With this new update, I'm a little worried because I have a new wii in the mail that I was planning to make region free on wednesday when I get it.

If the new Wii I get comes with a firmware below 4.2, like 4.1 or something. Since all the guides are written for 4.2 and there will be no way for me to update to 4.2 (if I do auto-update it'll go to 4.3)....what should I do? ^^;

Are there any games with 4.2 that I could use a disc update to get the system to 4.2 and then follow the guide from there? Does Mario Galaxy 2 have it?

Would you recommend not modding a new wii until after this update settles down and everything is safe again? Is there anything in the modding process that would be effected by a new uninstalled update out?

Yes, do not update the Wii yet. And the GWHT guide works with any firmware above 3.2, so you don't even have to update to 4.2 first.

Finally, SMG 2 contains a 4.2 update, so that is the safest method to upgrade for now.

Anyway, I'm off to change the tutorial in light of this new info...

Yeah, it's pretty clear that at the moment, you should definitely NOT install 4.3 unless you have forwarder channels installed for every homebrew app you want to be able to use off the SD.

It deletes HBC and blocks Bannerbomb which makes it quite hard to install any homebrew (you'd need Indiana Pwns).

There will likely be a new HBC with a new ID again very soon that you can upgrade to and then safely upgrade to 4.3 afterwards. Wait for that.

Any word if Stack Smash still works? And if the update adds anything aside from IOS80 (are there even any benefits for this?)
Not like I was going to update yet of course, but just wondering.

It also includes IOS58 which is for games with webcam support (some sort of fitness game had this).

It is pretty clear that, like 4.2, 4.3 is an anti-homebrew update and that's all. However, unlike 4.2, we may not get bannerbomb back, meaning Smash Stack and Indiana Pwns will be the only solutions for getting homebrew onto virgin Wiis. We'll know in a few days whether that is really the case or if there is still a bug in their SD code...

Whoops, I was on auto pilot this morning and pressed update.

HBC is gone. I hardly used it so it doesn't affect me in a big way (I only have 1 import Wii game) but I imagine some people on here would be crushed if they lost all their homebrew stuff.

HBC will most likely be back very soon, the only issue is that you may need a US Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Lego Indiana Jones from your Wii's region in order to get it back on there.

Update on the 4.3 situation...

While it seems that Bannerbomb might be dead for a while, a new alternative may have just presented itself, and I doubt anyone expected this...

The Twilight Hack is apparently back! :lol

And it turns out it was an elaborate joke coming from trusted posters... grr....

In better news: Wii Shop update page on the tutorial now supports the 4.3 shop.

I won't make the same mistake twice.

Waiting for 4.3 compatible homebrew. I still play Tatsunoko every once in a while, you know.

I was trying to play SSBB today but the disc channel would not read (The disc you inserted could not be read)my original copy... I had to start it with neogamma and it worked perfectly fine.. Does anybody know why?

A heads up for the new page:

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR WII IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR HOMEBREW

Summary:

4.3 will delete the HBC and disable Bannerbomb, making it quite hard (but not impossible) to get it back, even once a new HBC is released. Just wait it out and a new version will be ready soon making it safe to update. There are NO new features apart from homebrew deletion, so there is no point to update anyway.

In the meantime, fell free to update your Wii Shop to the latest version using the method in the GWHT.

Thanks Clipper.

By the way, some days ago I downloaded from the Wii Shop a bunch of updates for the Mii Channel, the Internet Channel, etc. etc.
The odd thing was that every update was "0 blocks" and of course very quick to download.

I still don't know what those updates changed, if anything at all... do you guys know, by any chance?

Thanks. I haven't had my Wii connected to the internet for like 3 months then I suddenly connect today and it's an update

:lol

Nooo way. Anyone know what the update does?? Besides get rid of homebrew (again)

Nothing at all.

I was wondering another thing; when I put Super Mario Galaxy 2 (EUR) in the Wii for the first time, it didn't ask for an update.
I already have 4.2, is that the reason?

Yes, that is the reason. That is assuming your Wii is PAL too, otherwise it's just your region free method blocking the update.

how can i tell if its my wii drive or optical laser thats broken?
Well, the laser is pretty much the only component in the drive that can break (well, the spinning mechanism can too, I guess), so there's probably no point in distinguishing between the two...

How long till the "store Wiis" have 4.3? Will there eventually be a new version of bannerbomb?
They'll probably start showing up soon, but it depends on how much stock Nintendo have already programmed.

As for BannerBomb, it seems safe to assume it's out for the count. It may eventually resurge, but we will have to wait and see. There are alternatives that are available (I had to use one in the tutorial for a few days back when 4.2 came out) and I'm hoping to look into a new alternative of my own design very soon, but I don't know if that one is going to work or not at this stage.

Well this couldn't have come at a worse time.

Playing Okami tonight and I just started getting the "graphical glitches of death" indicating my launch Wii is finally wearing out.

I don't know if it would be better to try and wipe my Wii clean of homebrew and send it to Nintendo to fix (anyone have any luck with that, I thought I heard something about them charging more or refusing to fix them) or just getting a new Wii. It would be nice to finally have an excuse to buy a black Wii.

I suggest you just wait it out to see if things get worse. I've had minor flickering pixels in several games for years now and they haven't got any worse than when I first noticed them.

I might just do that as it seemed like it was just one area of the game. I know there was one time when I booted up my Wii to play MM9 and I got weird inverted colors and slowdown. I reset it and it was fine. Hopefully by the time it really does crap out, this 4.3 issue will be taken care of.

But out of curiosity, if and when my Wii does crap out fully, what's the better option? Have people with broken Wii's sent into Nintendo have good luck getting their homebrew back on it?

Well, as soon as the new HBC is released (and I would be shocked if it's not out within the week), it will be possible to restore all homebrew onto the Wii, so there is no issue there.

Actually, I just realised that cboot2 is not enough for virgin Wii installs, so SSBB (NTSC-U only atm) or Lego Indiana Jones will be needed in order to run the HBC Installer...

Well, all I think HBC needs is a title fix. FYI - IOS 224 and 250 are not stubbed with the 4.3 update - I kinda updated by accident when fixing my internet connection and had HBC removed, but not my USB Loader forwarder channel. I'm waiting for HBC to update, but in the interim, I can write a guide to un-screw yourself if need be if you have a forwarder channel set up beforehand and update to 4.3 by accident if anyone is in that situation.

Yeah, that's been known from the start. IOS222 and 223 survive if they are the v5 versions and IOS202 and 236 survive as well. All will let you install other IOSes.

HBC actually needs a new hack too, but they apparently have plenty of those ready to go, so Team Twiizers is likely just doing beta testing before they release the new HBC and BootMii.

It is looking highly likely that virgin 4.3 installs are going to require either a US Smash Bros. or any Lego Indiana Jones. Hence, we are in the stage where it is much better for you to install homebrew first before updating to 4.3.

So I'm slightly confused...the guide I followed earlier this year to install HBC and USB Loader wasn't one here. Yesterday morning I noticed my Wii glowing blue, so I turned it on and wasn't prompted to do any updating. Went into my USB Loader channel and things seemed fine. Any idea why I wasn't prompted to update and why things still seem to work?

Did you visit the Wii Message Board to read the update message Nintendo sent you?

I wouldn't try that yet. Wait a few days and see what else they come up with.
Remember, with 4.3 , the bug cannot be restored onto IOS 15. They fixed a signature check where you cannot downgrade it.

I don't care for 4.3, I'll wait a few days to see what the easiest method to upgrade the Wii Shop (because I think you need 4.3, right?) is.

Or, sure, to upgrade to 4.3... but I'm not in a rush to do that.

Sounds like someone is working on a Gamecube USB loader of some sort...there's a proof on concept video on Youtube but I have no idea if it's for real
