GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

If the hard drive is formatted as FAT32, you can just copy them over. If it is WBFS, I suggest you use this opportunity to move over to FAT32 on the new drive anyway. The application and instructions at this page should help with that transfer, but you have to be familiar with the Mac equivalent to the command line. If you do work out how to use the Mac version of the app, please post your instructions as several less savvy Mac users have requested those instructions and I don't own one.

Thanks I will have a look tonight - fingers crossed I am FAT32 but I dont think I am. Think I will just abuse the computer at work to do it on a PC and the process will probably be a lot easier.

one of my friend's wiis is on 3.something (i forget) and he wants to upgrade to 4.2 (but not 4.3) because he uses homebrew, and wants the SD card menu.

Does the safe firmware upgrader work in that instance? I know I can't go through nintendo's updater because it will push it to 4.3.

Yes, he can upgrade via SMG 2, the safe upgrader, or DopMii as indicated on the upgrade page.

How lucky can I get? I was looking to get a Wii again since my doctor wanted me to use Wii Fit. I looked on the evil craigslist and found a good deal on one from a pretty avid Nintendo fan who said it was in mint condition. I get it and it was definitely in near perfect condition and he only sold it because he got the black Wii now. :lol

I got it fully expecting it to be on 4.3 so I knew I was going to have some trouble compared to the others I softmodded a few years ago. Well it turns out that it was still on 4.2U since I guess he never used it again after getting the new one. Even then, modding this thing had a lot more steps to it than when I did it a while ago.

So now I finally have everything good to go and was messing with the tech demos in the homebrew browser and figured out how to use the USB loader. I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but I have Wii Sports on my hard drive now! :lol

Time to find Wii Fit for a good price and put it on there. Not having to deal with discs is a big enough benefit for me! Surely I can find some homebrew app that's really cool that I wouldn't have seen a few years back.

I am currently using a USB loader and I have filled up my rather small hardrive - around 40gig. I am going to buy a bigger one - but before I do - is there any way to transfer the games over from Hard Drive to Hard Drive or would I need to rip them all again?? Also I am a mac user - dont know if that makes any difference.

Also does anyone know of a way to use the BBC iplayer outside of the UK - I have a UK wii but now live in Australia and I really miss the use of the iplayer as it was rather nifty.

Thanks in advance.

This will be tricky. It wouldn't be impossible for you to install the channel, but I imagine the video feeds would be geo-blocked, you'd need to somehow route your Wii's traffic via a good proxy or VPN. The latter would be too much of a pain in the arse to make it viable for everyday use.

Just bought a new Wii, any way to just carbon copy all my saves over? (know there will be some you can't).

StartPatch and SaveGame Manager are apps you should look into. I don't believe there's a copy all functionality built into any app, though.

I am not sure what to do GAF!

I just bought a new Wii and can't really install BootMii in the Boot but instead as an IOS. It is my understanding that I can't actually access BootMii without first booting into the system menu, which, as far as I'm aware, is useless if I get bricked.

Is this true? Is there some way to downgrade so I can install to the boot?

No, you can't. You could install Priiloader, but it is a much easier task to just never do anything that will brick you. Use StartPatch to block updates and don't install anything to the Wii (putting homebrew on the SD is OK) that is not recommended in the GWHT and you'll be good.

Hey guys, I hope someone can help me out because I've been trying to figure this error out for a while now and I'm totally confused. Okay, so I bought a used Wii from my friend for cheap, and I'm trying to install USB Loader on it. I've been following the GAF guide on how to install HBC and that worked out just fine. So I go on to the next thing, which is to use the Trucha Bug Restorer to install IOS236. I follow all the directions perfectly, and I get to the part where it says:

Step 1: set revision to 0
Step 2: install the IOS with low revision

So I press A to start, and pretty much immediately get the following error:
Error: ES_AddTitleFinish returned -1017
Error: Could not set the revision to 0
Downgrade failed

What am I doing wrong? I tried this several more times and it always gives me that same error. This Wii has never been hacked or modified at ALL, and I'm 100% sure of this. Also, it's running on 4.2U. Thanks in advance!

Are you using v1.12 of TBR and not 1.13?
What is the default IOS it has chosen at step 5.1? It should generally be IOS36, but perhaps that has somehow been updated to the latest version on your Wii. Try pushing B instead to not reload IOS and also try choosing some other IOSes at that step to see if you can find one that will allow you to downgrade IOS15 properly.

What if I did this (installed stuff to the Wii)... but then updated to 4.3... is it alright?

I too bought a new Wii, hacked it but then realised well it doesn't need it and then just updated to 4.3 to get onto the shop. Yeah probably dumb, but whatever. (My dad is going to use it, he doesn't need it - sohuld have thought it out).

Now waiting for safe updated for 4.3 for my white wii :(

What you have done is safe, but you have made it a lot harder to install homebrew in future if it is ever needed again. If you didn't install a forwarder channel as part of the hack, then Lego Indiana Jones is needed (SSBB would also work for an NTSC Wii) to get stuff back onto it.

The new firmware has nothing but a new shop, and you can update the shop without updating the firmware quite easily.

It actually is already possible to get everything back, including the HBC on a virgin 4.3 Wii if you own one of the games needed to run an original exploit (games mentioned above), but I really dislike the method used and will not be updating the tutorial until the new HackMii installer is released, which will utilise a much cleaner method.

Thanks, i used this, but after listing some titles it froze.Tried a second time, and it froze again, although not in the same spot.Anyway, i got the info i was looking for, so no biggie.

So I don't know what to do here, so I am turning to homebrew for hopefully an answer.

I used to have the hbc channel and all that on my wii, but I decided I didn't want/need it anymore, and have just been updating my software directly through the Wii. Now that 4.3U is out, I tried updating, but I keep getting error 32017, and it won't do anything else. When I try to access the shop channel, it tells me that I need the update. So I go back to try updating again, when I notice that now on the settings page, it says I have version 4.3U already. So I try the shop channel again, and again it tells me that I need the update.

I don't know what to do here. I wanna be able to access the shop channel.

I looked at the wiki but wasn't seeing anything that fits what's going on with me. I don't wanna have to send my wii in because for one thing it's way out of warranty, and another thing I don't know if Nintendo can detect that I had the HBC channel and stuff on there and end up refusing to fix it anyway.

I guess my other option is to wait for a game to come out that has 4.3U on it, but who knows when that'll happen. I no longer have the HBC, and since it's saying I'm on 4.3U already I assume I can't update the shop channel that way.

help me obi-gaf kenobi, you're my only hope.
The same exact thing is happening to me. I didn't use homebrew anymore, so I went to update to 4.3. The update got about 75% done when it failed. When it returned to the System Menu, the Homebrew Channel had already been removed, and the system says that it's 4.3, but the Wii Shop Channel still tells me I need to update. I then go to update, and about 10 seconds later get Error 32017. I've also waited and tried later as well. Same error.

I have SmashStack all set up if it's of any use in this scenario, but what should I do, GAF? The system is a little sluggish, as if the 4.3 update didn't go all the way through (or maybe that's a 4.3 feature).

All I want to do, however, is to access the Wii Shop Channel's newest version to download Ogre Battle 64. What are my options?

I had a question regarding WBFS to FAT.

I have a 500GB HDD, and I made a 300GB partition for WBFS. So, would it just be easier to reformat the drive entirely to FAT and just rerip my library anyway instead of trying to figure out the transfer option, since I have to unpartition the drive anyway?

You are using a Mac right? If so, it might be best to just rerip. If not, then the transfer method in the tutorial will save you some time. After deleting the WBFS partition, you can safely expand the FAT partition with the games to fill the drive without losing the data on the FAT partition.

Use Smash Stack instead of the HBC to launch one of the Wii Shop methods listed in the tutorial.

Tried both methods listed in the tutorial. Both gave me:

SD card detected
Opening boot.elf
reading xxx bytes... (the number is correct)
Done.
No valid Elf image detected, retrying.
SD card not found (-2_
USBGecko not found
No code found to load, hanging.

What did I do wrong?

Note that I'm on 4.3. It's just a bad install of it.

Edit: Just read that SmashStack only loads HackMii. Is that true?

I'm pretty sure that's not correct. I've never used Smash Stack and I don't have the ability to, so I'm not sure I can help. I do notice that it seems to want an elf file, which is not included in the Wii Shop methods. Now, I could probably compile a .elf version of WiiSCU, but before that, try using LoadMii with Smash Stack. It's a homebrew launcher like the HBC, comes with a .elf version, and I believe it looks in the same places. That should allow you to run the WiiSCU dol.

Yes, shortly after I has posted, I discovered LoadMii works as well.

However, while in LoadMii, I can't progress, and two weird things happen. First of all, LoadMii states that there is no internal SD card inserted, which is absurd, considering LoadMii is currently running off of it. So instead, what I did was grab a Flash drive formatted in FAT32 and threw WiiSCU.dol on that. I was able to browse the USB flash drive in LoadMii, but when I go to select something, I can't get it to execute. Like, I hit A, 1, and 2, and nothing happens.

What now?

BTW, thanks for your help so far.

Update: Tried again, after renaming all my files WiiSCU.dol, (DOPShop?) etc., rather than having a single boot.dol and boot.elf. With the proper names, WiiLoader allowed me to execute the files (IE: I pressed A and the system went to do something), but then the system freezes before fully loading up the executable, with WiiLoader still on the screen.

Hm. At a loss now.

I don't know a better thread to ask in with Wii technical people, so...has anyone ever had their Wii CRT TV image be all flickery and distorted, mainly when no image is displayed or when the main menu is displayed? The left bottom and top corners would curl in and flicker back. I tried switching to an RCA-to-PC converter but for some reason it couldn't detect the signal (or else the driver didn't work or something). I switched back to the TV and it seems to be working okay now, but I'm kind of scared it's the first step to my Wii breaking. I got this one around the time super smash brothers brawl launched, and I've tried to keep it covered when not in use to avoid getting dust in it.

I don't have another TV to test with, but if it shows up again, I might be able to find another one just to verify.

I finally got FPTii to work. I'm now able to access my FAT32 partition of my Wii's HDD in the laziest possible fashion!

Hey guys, bought another Wii (Third one) and I kind of became a noob with the upgrading to CIOs thing. First i :

1) Downgraded/upgraded to IOS236
2) Upgraded to Waninkoko's CIOS 249 rev 19
3) Upgraded to System Menu 4.3 using Waninkokos Firmware updater

My aim with this is to simply be able to install homebrew to the system menu and play the only import game I have access to at the time (Some horrible Naruto game my brother bought some time ago). I also bought Wii Party and it should be here within the week so I'm 'setting up' for that.

So.. did I do it all correctly?

So I bought Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands yesterday, but I thought I read that there was some kind of weird copy protection on it or something? Is it a danger to my homebrew stuff or does it just prevent it from being run from a USB loader or what's the status on that?

You cannot patch it in any way (Cheats, etc). It works fine under USB loading IF its not modified.

I just wanted to throw it out there that I finally got my partial 4.3 install resolved, along with the 32017 error as well.

I ended up using the 4.3 Virgin Wii Softmod Guide (Google it) using Smashstack, and, after a couple of tries thanks to the MMM program being really buggy, I not only got access to the store, but had my system downgraded to 4.1, with the Homebrew Channel and all kinds of other programs installed that I never had before!

And most importantly, Ogre Battle 64 is now mine!

Hopefully this is helpful for anyone else who has received the 32017 error, or who are stuck on 4.3!

Step 1 is correct, but you aren't downgrading anything, that's just installing an IOS.
Step 2 is correct.
Step 3 is very wrong. You should probably be OK, but there was absolutely no need to do that step. What you have done is installed a firmware that has been hacked to pieces and may make things troublesome for you in the future. You should never use a Waninkoko firmware updater. No games will ever need 4.3 as it provides no new features (at most, all they will need is some of the new IOSes, which can be updated separate to the firmware).

When using it with Cfg, set the Clear Patches option for the game to On or All. That will ensure that it plays properly. The option was added recently, so make sure you also have the latest version (v57b8). The GWHT has the instructions for upgrading either manually or online.

I'm glad it worked for you, but I do not recommend this to others stuck on 4.3 yet. The current 4.3 virgin method requires several steps which are not very good for your Wii and could cause severe problems at later times. The new HBC will be out soon and that will make it much easier and safer to get homebrew back onto the Wii.

Just finished the USB Loader part of the tutorial [it takes more time configuring it than installing it :P]

Thanks Clipper for all the effort! :D

Just a quick question(s):

When installing games to the HDD, the extension of the game file is .WBFS, is that correct? I'm using a FAT HDD...

Also, I put write_playlog = 1 in the CONFIG.TXT file, and while the play log is indeed posted in the Wii Message Board [sometimes the Homebrew Channel is posted too, why?], the Nintendo Channel doesn't read that data [for installed games in the HDD], is that a bug (I like to see how many hours/times I've played a game)?

Yes, the extension is .wbfs, but I don't see why that's important...

The Homebrew Channel will show up if you don't launch a game or use some other sort of homebrew.

The Nintendo Channel should treat the data exactly as if you'd played from disc. What game are you having issues with?

Hackmii Installer v0.7 is out.
Notable mentions include:
1) The new HBC and BootMii interfaces are really classy looking.
2) It now must install BootMii as an IOS to function properly. (You can still install it to Boot2 if your Wii is old enough, and/or delete the IOS version once HBC is updated.)
3) DVDX is dead.

Upgrading can be as simple as opening up your current HBC and waiting for your network ready Wii to prompt you with the new version.

got a bit impatient. Perhaps thats why bootmii wont install. It tells me there are no usable or vulnerable IOSes installed and tells me to suck it.

Oh fucking excellent!
I ran out of room on my trusty 2GB SD card after a couple of Wii Shop purchases a few weeks ago. I've been meaning to shift all of my content to a spare 8GB microSDHC I've had lying around for a few months, but was scared shitless that I'd had to re-sort 13 pages worth of channels from scratch again. So considering that there haven't been any new Wii Shop purchases worthy of my attention in the past 3 weeks, I haven't done the upgrade.

Well, the new HBC/BootMii upgrade inspired to get off my ass and swap the cards... and thankfully after using my PC to transfer everything over from the SD to the microSDHC, it became apparent that the former's sorted order was retained. Fantastic.

OK, at some point you may have installed some bad versions of IOSes (it could very well be Wanin's installer). Your next step is to try to fix the IOSes that you have installed so that they are like they were when Nintendo installed them. Especially, you should correct IOS34 and IOS61. You can use Dop-Mii to do this. Just install the latest versions of those IOSes. Do NOT install over the ones that are divisible by 10 (50, 60, 70, etc.) though.

You need to install it with ios 223 I think, or at the very least boot it with it.
And you need the M+ plugged in obviously, otherwise it'll hangs.

This is about play log + Nintendo Channel records...

The new instructions for 4.3 exploits to get the HBC back on your Wii are up in the tutorial. If I previously told you to wait for a fix, now is the time to act.

I hope I got it all right as I was rushing a little to beat my laptop battery as I left my charger at work. I had just enough time to finish it. The battery died as I was trying to post here actually; I'm now posting this from the PS3 browser.

If there are any issues, please post them here and I'll fix them when I get the charger back in the morning.

Like what? Should I be worried at all?

Can I just update the HBC through the channel like I did last time, and then update my Wii to 4.3 and it'll be fine?

As someone with several import games...I'm worried I will lose the ability to play them ever again...

You can update HBC through the channel. However, there's no point in installing the 4.3 firmware update. It brings absolutely no new features or functionality to the table, and the new IOSes can be independentally updated/installed, should they ever actually be required by a game.

Yeah but I'm worried if I were to install the individual updates for the channel, and then decide to update the system at a later date, would I somehow end up bricking the Wii? >_>;
