GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Considering that it is a well-known crash from downloading a pirated copy...

If you like i'll take a picture of the disc and upload it on a free picture upload website or something. I can easily say i've never pirated a game, wouldn't know where to start.

USBloader was installed for me by my roommate. He handles this stuff, but seeing as we're on summer break from school i gotta try to do it, or wait 2.5 weeks.

The "baby's cry" hang is a big problem seen in a faulty download that is present on the Internet. There is a very slight possibility your rip could have the same bug, but I doubt it. What IOS revision did you use to rip the game?

Cfg will tell you the IOS and revision you are currently using if you push 1 twice from the games list.

When i push 1 twice, i get a page called "cover download"

Is it Configurable USB Loader that is installed? If so, please post what comes up for your IOS when you push 1 twice in Cfg under the IOS field.

OK, that sounds like a different USB Loader then. Install Cfg as per these instructions and then push 1 twice.

It's called "USBloader gx". When i check the gameload settings, i see IOS 249.

Follow the instructions here to get Cfg and then check the global options for the revision of IOS249 you are using.

I downloaded the cfg and unzipped it to it's proper location, but i still only see usbloader gx in homebrew. Also, how do i know if i need any of the dol files?

So you have a file at sd:/apps/USBLoader/boot.dol? You should also have sd:/usb-loader with a lot of files in it.

You don't need the extra dol files right now. v59 will suffice.

Okay so I'm on 4.3 and up to this point the only things on the Homebrew Channel I've had installed are GeckoOS, Quake and a one or two other little games. I finally want to install Configurable USB Loader since my disk drive is getting pretty noisy. Is the process for installing all the IOSs still as simple now that I'm on 4.3? And does Other M work okay with it?

Also, do I install IOS236 first before I do anything since I haven't installed any other IOSs yet?

I guess my question is: what are my options? Could I buy another Wii and send it in with the old one to have my purchases transferred? If you had used the HBC for piracy (not saying you did), you could have forced your Wii to think that you owned every VC game in existence. Nintendo doesn't keep records to say what DLC you did or didn't pay for. They just expected your Wii to keep track of that for them.

Since your Wii was compromised by the evils of HBC and Nintendo has apparently identified you as a dirty pirate because of it, they most likely won't give you the complimentary re-download of the stuff you paid for, since they feel that's a bonus service that they're under no obligation to give you even on the best of days.

In the future, try to think of DLC (and Nintendo's DLC in particular) as indefinite-length rentals, not purchases. You pay a low price for something and get to play with it for a while.

Follow the steps in order on the guide page, so yes, start with IOS236.

Nintendo does actually keep track of stuff you bought. The ticket installation trick you mention worked too, but that's only in addition to what you are registered as having purchased. I still probably agree they're unlikely to perform the transfer, but it's not for the reason you specify there.

And this is why over PC/PS3/Wii, I only own 1 DLC title, Orange Box on PC (Steam), and it is the same reason why I instead of getting the DLC updates to Resident Evil 5 (Ps3) from PSN I bought the Gold Edition on disc.

You never know when the DLC is gone from teh servers and you cant get them anymore =(

It's true, though. Pretty much all modern DRM is tied to the goodwill (as well as continued existence) of the company that sold you the DLC.

After converting my drive over to FAT32 and updating to cIOSx rev. 10 I spent some time experimenting with something I've wanted to test for a long time.

As a back story, I typically install a forwarder channel for my most commonly played items so they're available from the system menu. Typically when forwarder channels are created, the title id is used but with Uxxx instead of Rxxx or Sxxx. I originally assumed that this was so that it would not conflict with the channel that is created when the disc is in the Wii. Surprisingly enough, having the title stay the same as the original does not conflict with the disc channel.

The other reason why I did this originally, is because way back before system menu logging was available in CFG, this logged play times to the system. I only found out sometime within the past six months ago that playing games with this method does not send the correct information to the Nintendo channel. My assumption was the Nintendo channel uses the title id in the system playlog to determine the information listed in the Nintendo channel. Hence some of the following experimenting:

  • Using disc (obviously) logs correctly to the Nintendo channel
  • CFG with write_playlog enabled does not log to the Nintendo channel
  • Forwarder with Uxxx id does not log to the Nintendo channel
  • Forwarder with R/Sxxx id does not log to the Nintendo channel
I only had a short time to run these tests last night, but I have a few more tests I want to to run to come to a better conclusion. But before I do that, I thought Clipper or someone else may have an idea of why things aren't working as expected.

So Nintendo refused to fix my broken disc drive because they found evidence of the HBC even though it got deleted months ago.

I guess my question is: what are my options? Could I buy another Wii and send it in with the old one to have my purchases transferred? This is an absolutely terrible policy, Nintendo. I gave you my 80 dollars for the repair, I bought your system and a shit ton of your games, and now you're punishing me for wanting to play Disastah and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

Ugh.

Wait, so they charged you for the repair, then refused to fix it? I hope they gave you a refund.

The one time we took our original Wii into Nintendo's service place to have it fixed, there was no issue with the HBC just sitting there on the Wii Menu. They ran through a few test on the system, and sent us home with a new system and transferred data.

Getting slightly annoyed here.

Just brought Metroid: Other M, and it decided to try installing it to my USB stick because my drive sounds hell, and I'd rather not stress it.

Ret error -1. Oh. Looked around, apparently I need to update to IOS 236. So I follow the rules in the Wiki, and like a fucking idiot, I accidently press both 1 and 2 at once.

Apparently, I'm a pirate. Like hell I am. So I go back to try again - it's locking me out. How the hell do I restart it?

(photo evidence of game coming soon to back myself up)

edit - here we go:

D5MNH.jpg

edit again: sorted it. Had to delete the ios using anytitledeleter and then start from scratch. thank fuck, I'm worried about my disk drive dying any minute now, and I've gotta play this game. :lol

Managed to install all the IOSs and the USB loader fine, but I keep getting errors when trying to download themes in the loader and when downloading cover art after ripping a game.

014a6df9.jpg

EDIT: never mind, I've got it working now after I freed up some space on the SD card.

Hey guys!

4.2 EUR here, i never updated to 4.3 but i did update my Wii Shop.

Now Metroid Other M wants to update my Wii: Yes (with Metroid) or No (update other ways to avoid losing the HBC)?

Ok, so we damaged the original netflix-wii disc and ordered a replacement - we actually went ahead and ordered another for the ps3 at the same time just to be safe.

When I try to play the new disc, I get a blue screen error 002. The last wii game we have purchased was NSMBWii or How to train your dragon (I cannot remember which one is first)

The old one worked just fine, and still does if I eject, clean, re insert, eject, wipe - etc etc. It's badly scratched.

Anyone have this come up before?

It has a wii-key inside of it.

Can someone tell me what I need to do in order to get Mario Galaxy 2 to run using Cfg without going to a black or white screen between loading levels? Its seemingly random...as if no matter what IOS I use 249, 222, etc it will happen somewhere but in a different place each time. Does Cfg automatically select the best settings for each game it detects or do you just have to keep playing with them until you find something that works?

I read online something about IOS56. Do I need to use DopMii to install v5661? I have the version before that (the one from the Galaxy 2 disc I presume). Are there instructions for this anywhere? When DopMii says to pick a slot to install IOS56 should I just pick slot 56?

Will the homebrew page ever be updated with details on how to install these other IOSes?

Is it possible to run the game from the disc, bypassing the system update?

I've got starfall installed, and I've set it to disable updates.

I'm still on 3.2, and Metroid hasn't prompted me to update at all.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/StartPatch

Does the same job. Works on v4.0, v4.1, v4.2 or v4.3.

Features:

# Region Free Wii Games - Allows you to Play Import Titles.
# IOS Selection - Allows you to select which IOS you would like to use.
# Disable HAXX, DVDX, RZDx Checks - Disables the System Menu from blocking Homebrew.
# Block Disc Updates - Blocks updates which have been embedded in Discs.
# Block Online Updates - Prevents online updates being installed.
# Force WiFi Connection Test Error - thus preventing the system update that is offered at the WiFi connection test from occuring.
# Region Free Channels - Allow installation of any region Channels.
# Region Free GC Games No VM Patch - Removes region restrictions on Gamecube games.
# Remove NoCopy Protection (Need To Install ALL Five) - Removes the Save File Copy Protection, which prevents Save Files from being copied to SD Cards.
# Move Disc Channel - Enables the Disc Channel to be moved.
# No Menu BG Music - Removes the System Menu's background music.
# Recovery Mode 4th GC DPad UP - Allows you to enter the Wii's Recovery Mode easily.
# Remove Diag Disc Check - Remove Diagnostic Disc check.
# Auto-Press A At Health Screen - Automatically presses "A" for you at the Health Screen.
# Replace Health Screen With Black - Instead of seeing the Health Screen, it shows a black screen

Bolded the most useful ones there, you'll want to install those.

I have tested this previously and I disagree with you. As long as you installed the game yourself, then playtime logged with write_playlog switched on should be detected by the Nintendo Channel. How did you perform your test?

Man, I'm amazed how crazy some of you guys are getting when trying to find ways out of this. The method you used was a bit extreme and there are much better ways to sort it out. The app even gives you a hint after a while (i.e., prove you are not a pirate).

You can safely update with the Other M disc if you take precaution first. The instructions, as always, are on the Wiki. In this case, you must have the HBC up to date. If you are using USB Loaders, you will also need to reinstall the cIOSes afterwards and install a method to block the disc update so that Metroid doesn't ask to update again.

Is Mario Galaxy 2 the only game you have a problem with? It sounds more like your drive going to sleep than any issue with the game itself. Installing Nintendo IOSes is not going to help you with any USB Loaded game as you are using the cIOS to play the game, not the Nintendo one. Perhaps what you saw about IOS56 was someone saying to use base 56 with rev20 of IOS249? That is the best way to install it and you should be keeping the cIOSes up to date. You can do that by following the upgrade steps of IOS249 in the tutorial.

Thanks for the info. However the download links for the 4.2 version aren't working anymore, so I went searching a bit and found this on another forum:

Run the game through Gecko OS, and let it install the IOS.
From then on it shouldn't ask for updates anymore.

I already had Gecko OS on my SD card, which I never used, so I thought I'd try that. The game is running fine this way and I didn't even see the IOS install.

The GWHT page for StartPatch about avoiding disc updates has a link to a file with all the 4.2 patches. In fact, it was a topic of discussion in this thread just a few days ago that got it there. It's easier than using Gecko OS every single time you want to play the game.

Look for an app to disable spindown for your drive.

I think I found the issue. You are correct it does work. But only in certain circumstances.

It seems once more than 10 titles are listed on the Wii message board during the same day, it's truncated to "others". It seems any additional playtime once this happens is not available in the Nintendo channel. It just so happened yesterday that I only got around to testing the playtimes enough with CFG/forwarder after I had already reached that point. I was able to confirm that it didn't log anything additional after that time. Food for thought.

I hate to newb up the place, but searching through this thread was hard to find a correct answer. But here's my situation:

I got a Wii (up to date...) and an external HDD. I'd like to use that USB Loader Channel to access all the games I already own without the need of a disc (a guy my gf baby sit for has it). Am I out of luck with my Wii being up to date? And is there a step by step guide how to make this happen?

Thanks sorry if this was previously answered. Once I saw that guys Wii (CONSOLE!) with about 30 games all loaded on one HDD I can't stop wanting to do it also...

Thank you Dragona very much. But I do actually have one question that has been pestering me for a bit, feel free to shame the hell out of me if this has been asked before:

When you access your saves (while playing through the USB Loader) will they be stored on the ext HDD or from the same place they are now (on the Wii). I don't want to lose any of my saves :|

This will be my last newb question!

All USBloader does is have the Wii access the HDD instead of the DVD drive for playing the game. All saves remain on the Wii, and you can switch back and forth between discs and HDD with the same save files.

Oh wow awesome. Thank you! Now I got to undo my mistake upgrading to 4.3 =| The guide seems great so I should be good to go! But for now I vanish! *poof*

I've been playing Other M (EUR on my EUR Wii) via Gecko OS but I definitely want to play it with the Disc Channel.

By the way, not that i want to do it, but if i update to 4.3 from the game disc without precautions will i just lose the HBC or will it harm my Wii?

If you update to 4.3 from the Other M disc you will not lose the HBC as long as it is up to date. You will lose IOS249and IOS222 and will need to reinstall them. If you reinstall them, the disc will want to update to stub them out again, so if you need the extra cIOSes for any reason, you should use the method to avoid disc updates. If you don't need them, then the update is fine.

I lied I got more questions. I was going to pay my "friend" to do it but I realized my gf has a SD Card reader in her laptop so I can try it myself. But a couple questions if anyone can answer, if not I wont cry; promise!

1. I'm at version 4.3 (yuck) does the Brawl exploit revert my Wii back to >=4.2? Or is it just a workaround to get the Homebrew channel working?
2. I have a 1gig SD card is that enough? The FAQ said around 2gigs, not sure if that is necessary.

I'm going to try to do it tomorrow or sunday, so I'll probably have more questions. You guys are so damn smart, this crap is confusing!

1. It gets your HBC working. There is no safe way for you to downgrade.

2. It's plenty. The FAQ actually says it needs to be less than or equal to 2GB, not around 2GB.
