GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Don't get too excited. It seems that music might be broken and there's quite a few other bugs. Also, you need to be able to compile the code yourself and to compile SNEEK.

I'm going to hold of until it's been worked on a bit more and someone has created a solid tutorial, but I'm pretty stoked for this news. I've been wanting to play Wind Waker and the wife has been wanting to play Thousand Year door, but the drive on our Wii is busted.

So it seems like Dios Mios has released.

That means playing GCN games on Wii's USB drive, but it also means migrating to SNEEK, which isn't exactly easy. I'm really busy right now so I don't have time to do a tutorial, unfortunately.
Siiiick. Obviously not practical to use right now, but awesome news.

This will eventually be implemented in configurable usbloader right?

It requires SNEEK, so that makes it quite difficult to do. However, we might be able to make it so that you can use Cfg to launch SNEEK and autoload the selected game, as well as to rip the games into the correct format. No guarantees yet as it is really unclear what will happen.

So I just updated my shop channel to download a demo. I installed the demo on my SD card, played and wanted to delete it. Problem : when I access to the SD card from the main menu, bannerbomb automatically asks me if I want to launch it. I answer no, then try to delete the demo. But before it's finished, bannerbomb launches (!) and when I tried to return to the SD menu, my wii freezes.

I'm a bit worried right now, even if everything else seems to work.

Just for confirmation:
Does Configurable USB Loader fail to start if you don't have a USB HD plugged in?

I followed the GAF wiki last night and installed everything required for Configurable USB Loader, but when I opened it it gave me a 30 second countdown and then shut itself down.

I'd like a bit of protection for discs prompting me to update, and the Wiki says that Configurable USB Loader can stop this.

Since I didn't have a USB HDD handy, I thought I'd pop in Metal Slug Anthology and see how things went.

Just making sure that this is the expected behavior and that I haven't goofed anything up.

Man, I've totally lost track of what IOS I have installed and uninstalled and what hacks I have and don't have or have twice because I didn't know I had it the first time... plus the shop channel no-update installs, etc...

I feel like my Wii's nand is just one big jumbled up mess and I keep getting the urge to just wipe it clean and start over with a nice clean organized Wii. I get worried that all this tampering is going to screw me over when Wii 2 HD comes out and the WiiWare/VC transfer processes are released.

You are meant to remove the BannerBomb file from your SD card once you have the HBC installed. Delete the sd:/private/wii/title/aktn/ directory from your SD card.

With the default settings, it does require you to have a drive plugged in. However, you can get it to work without a drive too. Simply change "device=usb" in config.txt to "device=sdhc" with either the Configurator or manually editing the file. Then Cfg will launch properly as it will mount the SD for the games instead of the USB.

Seeing as you don't have a drive, you might as well add "button_+ = boot_disc" to config.txt at the same time. That removes a few button pushes you would otherwise need to access the feature.

Thanks.

I'll take a gander at that configuration page you've got up on the Wiki and play around a bit with the handy app you made.

Thank you again for all of your effort to help others.

I've been outta the loop for awhile. I'm running 4.1 I think, it might be 4.0 still however. I modded my Wii during early summer 09. Basically, all I want to do is play some of the newer games like New Super Mario, Mario Galaxy, Kirby, and Zelda when it comes out next year.

Do I need to upgrade anything to play these? Either the official firmware or the modded stuff. I dont really care about the usb loader stuff, I mainly just modded my wii for emulators. I simply want to buy the retail disc of these games, put the disc and play it without it bricking or my system.

You can upgrade, but if you prefer to not go through the hassle Gecko works pretty well. You just have to take a few extra steps each time you want to launch a disc with an update.

To what? The Wii? Is this meant to be a joke?

You definitely need to upgrade the HBC. After that, you can either upgrade the Wii normally or perform the steps to avoid disc updates.

That would be awesome, Clipper! I know there's no guarantee it will work or will even be worth the programming time to make, but put me down for a vote of encouragement. You guys do excellent work with Cfg, and this would make it just that much greater!

I'm really glad Crediar decided to go open-source with this. From what I'm reading, there's a lot of work to be done to get this anywhere near as compatible as USB loading for Wii games. Might even involve writing game specific coding/patching. And some games might never work. But all of that is okay, as I'll be happy if I can get a sizable portion of my library to USB load at 100% working status. I can always break out the discs for the others. Now to sit back and wait for the open-source code monkeys to take this proof of concept to the extreme. Good luck!

i just read that there's a gamecube usb loader out

if this thing can force games to run in progress mode, that would be fucking awesome

Wii homebrew n00b here, had a quick question. I have a US Wii running the latest official firmware. I'd like to play Another Code: R on it. How difficult a proposition is that?

Depends. How difficult is it to buy a copy and put it in your Wii?

Not difficult at all! Money can be exchanged for goods and services!
Actually, he missed something big, probably forgetting that AC:R is PAL only. For your situation, you first need to own either Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Lego Indiana Jones.

If you have that, follow the instructions for installing homebrew so that you'll be able to load import games here and you'll be all good to run AC:R.

Okay folks, maybe you all can help me out somehow. I've read the wiki, searched on Google, but no dice. Is there a way I can use my 80GB iPod Classic 5G to back up my Wii games? I've seen people here and all over the internet have seen success using iPods, but no matter how many instructional methods I read, I can't seem to get it working. The most I know is that I have to create a partition for the iPod, but I can't even seem to do that right. If somebody could help out a lost soul I would be very thankful.

OK, first off, you will probably lose all data on the iPod, so make sure you never want to use it as an iPod ever again (recovery is possible, but prepare for the worst).

Now, you do need to format your iPod's drive to FAT32. You can follow the instructions for GParted which will definitely allow you to format it to FAT32, but this tool might also do it for you a lot easier so you should try it first.

I have three more, including an iPod Touch and an iPhone, so losing its ability to play music doesn't faze me much. And I just restored it to factory settings, and looking in "My Computer" it lists the iPod as already being in FAT32.

Edit: Just tried the second tool you listed, anything else I should do now?

Follow the rest of the instructions in the tutorial to install Cfg on your Wii and it should work.

Tried it, but the program gave me a 30 second countdown while trying to mount the device, then gave me an error code (ret= -1). Seems like my Wii doesn't like my iPod, or I'm still missing something.

Since updating from about Rev17 of Waninkoko's cIOS, my drive has had spin-down issues. Thing is, I never had them before. I could use a forwarder to boot up Cfg, and had absolutely no issues.

Since updating, it comes up 'Mounting USB Drive'....'OK!', and then nothing happens. I've been getting round this by just loading HBC first, and changing the active mount to USB, which spins it up, before firing up Cfg.

It's getting a bit annoying though - could it be the Base IOS i'm using with cIOS?

I'm using base 56 at the moment, but I keep seeing lots of different opinions on the best base (56/38 being the most common).

Maybe I should try 17 again and see if it works, or just see if can do something with the spindown settings on my USB Drive. Just seems strange that it was working fine for about a year at least, and now it's not working as it was.

Yes, try some other bases. Also try the -222 version. Also, make sure you are using a recent version of Cfg, such as v60.

Hmm... Perhaps try making sure you have IOS222 installed and use the -222 version of Cfg (instructions are on the installation page). Also try plugging in the iPod during the countdown instead of beforehand.

I just attributed that to message board snark. Thanks a ton, Clipper. That wiki is amazing!

I just got my MH3 + CC Pro bundle. I tried using the CC Pro with WiiSX but it didn't recognize it. (I'm using an unofficial version of WiiSX since the official version doesn't support USB 2.0) Do I have to do anything to get homebrew apps to recognize it, or does it depend on the app? I'd really like to be able to use the CC Pro with WiiSX.

I'm using that version of WiiSX with a CC Pro too - I have to go into the settings every time I start it and manually tell it I'm using a control pad. Sometimes it doesn't seem to take, but you can tell when it's right as the on-screen button mappings will change.

So let's talk cIOS bases:

What was the original waninkoko base?

What are people using now as their main base?

The original was 36 up to rev 10 or so, and then it became 38 up to rev 17. Rev 18-19 gave us a choice and the best seemed to be 57. With rev20, more choices were added and it seems 56 seems to have the best compatibility with most things, although some drives seem to prefer 57 and CoD Black Ops might need 57.

More info can be found here.

Whoa, I totally missed the fact that Dios Mios is out :lol Fucking schoolwork... How's the compatibility looking? There's a compatibility list on GBATemp but it only has a few games listed. (None of which work perfectly, and Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine don't work at all unfortunately.)

Yeah it ended up working for me eventually.

Question:

How do I go about ripping games in a .iso format so I can play them on the PC emulator.

Rip them to USB using cfg usb loader on the Wii.

Then plug in your USB into your PC, load up wii backup manager on windows (select the first drive as your usb stick, the second as your main HDD), select the game you want, and transfer to .ISO

richisawesome's method works, but is no longer needed.

You want to have an NTFS partition on your hard drive and add the following options to config.txt with the Configurator or editing config.txt:

partition=ntfs1
ntfs_write=1
install_partitions=iso

Cfg will then rip your games directly to .iso files on the drive itself. No extra tools needed to convert them.

Great method - I reverted back to using WBFS after losing my SD card and having to re-download everything again, and pretty much forgot I could use NTFS/FAT.

Two questions regarding that:
1) I have an existing 250GB NTFS drive with data on it. Can I use it as is without losing the data on it?

2) When it rips to .iso, is it a regular .iso, or has it been compressed/scrubbed (or whatever the term is) to remove dummy data and reduce file size?

1) Yes you can

2) No, it is the complete .iso with all the dummy data.

Well my hard drive wouldn't work with CFG USB loader when it was NTFS anyway. Using a PC program to convert it is no hassle it all, it does a great job.

However, pointless for me. :lol I just ran Super Mario Galaxy and I'm getting 16-17fps at 480p :lol

I need a new PC.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 needs a beast of a rig to run at anything above 40fps.

Give NSMBW a go. Make sure you have render to texture (not ram) turned on, you'll get near 60fps in HD easily.

Why isn't this the default? I put it to texture, and went from 17fps to 43 for Wii Sports.

Is there any drawback to using Homebrew Channel, etc. or with some time and proper care I can emulate everything (Wiiware access, WiiShop, etc.)?

Does anyone know what firmware comes with Black Wii for Europe?

Also, is the wiki type of mix-and-match? e.g. if I have HC I can skip all steps involving HC when installing something else? Is there any order while installing things mentioned in Wiki (except when required i.e. HC before anything else)?
