GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Yes, you do need a game, but Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Wheelie Breakers is also suitable along with SSBB and Lego Indiana Jones. Just to check, the guide you are following is this one right?

So you have a file called sd:\private\wii\app\rsbe\st\st_080805_0933.bin ?

And another called sd:\boot.elf ?

And you do have a US Wii?

I got it to work after messing with it all day. I want to legitimately backup the games I own, archive purposes and all that. All I get is 1101 error, reading on that is bad media, or if its a newer Wii, it might have a new drive that can't read DVD's at all. I guess I need a USB HD now, or just don't mess with it. Is it easy to uninstall HBC, or once you have it, its here to stay?

If you want to remove it eventually, make a BootMii backup as your first act. Then, you just need to restore that backup with BootMii and perform the HBC deletion steps. Otherwise, you'll have logs and other stuff to bother with and it's just too troublesome.

I got Sonic Colours tonight, put it in my hacked Wii, and it just went to a black screen. Boourns :( What can I do?

Edit: I'm on 4.0e, do I need to upgrade? How would I do so safely? I still want my home brew :)

Read the last two pages of thread, mate.

Either use a recent game or a disc with a recent update as specified on the tutorial.

All discs from now on will try to upgrade IOS249 and IOS222 into stubs. You either have to start putting those into the unstubbed slots (247, 248 for 249 and 224 for 222) or do the avoid disc updates steps.

The updates on the discs you mention are just plain 4.3 updates.

Exactly :D

I guess i'll just keep booting through Gecko then.

Wait, what? Why not just install 249 into the 247 slot and configure Cfg to boot that way (via the new meta.xml arguments support)? That way you can use the disc and have USB Loading without bothering with StartPatch.

Usually when I tinker I break things, best for me to leave things alone :(

I don't have USB loading or StartPatch setup anyway. If this makes anything easier, I have a mod chip.

I found an old 2.5 harddrive in a drawer yesterday, could I just throw that into an inclosure, connect it via USB and be ready to not change discs when I want to play games, or is it only very specificly specced harddrives that work?

i think you should be fine. Just put NTFS on the drive and use wii backup manager. On another note. Does anyone know how hard it is to replace a dvd drive in a wii?

the HDD is fine, it's the enclosure you have to worry about. Some just plain don't work (i know this from experience, it took me 3 tries to find one that actually worked properly)

Sakura Wars gives me two files, 'wbf1' and 'wbfs'. Do I drop both into the WBFS folder on the root of my HDD or do I need to create a 'SAKENS' (Sakura Wars' ID) folder and drop both files into it?

2 questions regarding backups:

I don't have many Wii games. in fact, I only have Metal Slug Anthology and Twilight Princess.

I did notice that when I backed up MSA with Configurable USB Loader that Wii Backup Manager listed it as having an Update partition.

I used Wii Backup Manager to remove the update partition and scrub the ISO down in size. Now obviously it's a launch game, so its updates have been superseded , but I have to wonder...

1) If I buy newer games (like DKC Returns, as mentioned above) and use Wii Backup Manager to remove the update partition and scrub the ISO, will the game even prompt me for updates at that point if I load it with Configurable USB Loader?

2) I saw that Wii Backup Manager can convert an ISO to CISO. Does Configurable USB Loader work with this file type? And if it does, is there any reason not to use it? I figure it might save some space on the hard drive.

Configurable USB loader will automatically launch DKCR without it asking you for an update. You don't have to modify the game at all.

Ah, cool.

Does this apply to all games with an update partition then? I know the GAF Wiki mentions that some USB loaders avoid updates, but I just wanted to be sure.

Is there the possibility of any harm from removing the partition when I scrub down the ISO file?

I bet I have the newer Wii DVD drive. -_- So I doubt it'll even read -R's. Though I had a DVD+RW, and it made a few clicking noises, like it was trying to read and boot it, but eventually gave me the 1101 error.

Though the brand for the +R's was TDK, and the +RW was Office Depot, lol.

I have no idea, but is the update partition really that large? All it does in DKCR, Sonic Colors, and in Epic Mickey is that it stubs your IOS249. As long as you always launch it from the launcher you will never be asked to update.

Man! 76% I have the newer drive. I did a search on my serial #. Getting HBC on the Wii has become pretty expensive. I had to buy an SD card, about $15 dollars, SD card reader, another $17dollars, Super Smash Bros, about $50dollars. I'm now off to buy a USB 250gig HD, that runs about $49.99. I guess the good thing is I can put the games that I own on the drive and not worry about running the DVD drive anymore.

I buy all my SD cards online. I got a 2GB card for about $8 including expedited shipping on Amazon from an independent seller selling off a bulk purchase of cards. And Smash Bros is worth the $50, don't complain :lol

The first bit is due to it being larger than 4GB (IIRC its a DVD-9) which is the largest filesize on FAT32 and I'd assmue you ripped it using a USB loader (in which case it should be in the right place) or it is a file that came from converting a WBFS partition to FAT32 (in this case I'd put it where you put any other game...which I'm not sure if that is the WBFS folder I don't use FAT32 myself).

Speaking of which, did the 512GB upper limit on partitions ever change.

The one I am using is a Vantek NexStar. The two ones i used beforehand that didn't work was a generic chinese enclosure (:lol) and an Eagle one.

That limit only ever applied to WBFS.

Anything special I need to do to the drive itself? Do the games need to be in special folders, or just the root of the drive?
Rip the discs using Cfg itself.

finally got around to hooking up my wii again, it is twilight hacked on 3.0U, can I just update the firmware then banner bomb it, or is there a specific order I should go about getting this up to date, i know after i have banner bomb on it I can get usbloader ect, my only question is upgrading...just dont want to brick my wii

Thanks! I got this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=3#scrollFullInfo

If I make a partition for my Wii games, can I make the other half NTFS? Its my first USB drive too, can you run programs off this, like PC games? I've been meaning to get one, since I have like 30gig free on my PC. I guess USB speeds aren't the same as internal. I'm a bit of a noob to this.

I suggest either partitioning FAT32 for the Wii games and NTFS for the rest or just leave the whole drive NTFS (All FAT32 is also acceptable if you don't need to store large files). I haven't got around to updating the tutorial properly, but NTFS is now supported as long as you use the ntfs_write=1 option.

I wouldn't run stuff off it if I were you. It's a great place for storing media and so on, though. Before I got a new PC with a bigger hard drive, I used my external drive to store my iTunes library, which saved me a ton of space (due to having a bunch of Digital Copy movies from my Blu-Rays).

My brother updated the wii to 4.3EU... Luckily homebrew channel was already updated so that wasn't removed.

However, usb loader gx no longer works.

I reinstalled ios236, 249 and 222.. But usb loader gx will switch to a black screen when starting any game. Any idea what is wrong?

been on 4.3 for a while. Got a message from Nintendo that says that there was an update to 4.3, but when I try to download it, nothing. Not sure what that's all about. Just fyi for you homebrewers out there, there might be yet another update coming shortly.

Probably, you are using one of the versions of GX that doesn't like rev 20 of IOS249. Perhaps the later versions of it fix things up? I really don't know. Cfg should definitely work.

Tried to play a 2p vs match on Brawl today and the Wii kept hanging at the level select screen and playing a constant strange sounding tone. After a bunch of tries, I did get it to load a 2p match, but after that match it hung again.

I used the smash stack thing to get the channel on my Wii, anyone heard anything about that causing things like this?

Have you removed the smash stack custom stage off the SD card? I'd guess it loading is what is causing the problem.

yeah, my vanilla brawl is fucked from homebrew too (in the same way as you). But, for some reason, Brawl- works fine.

This is the problem. When you get to the stage select screen it looks at your SD card to find custom stages. And it's trying to load the exploit. I had the same thing happen to me.

Is there a method (legit or homebrew, doesn't matter) of password protecting or outright disabling the "Update Wii System" option in the Wii menu?

I finally sat down to get 4.2 and StartPatch installed, and everything seemingly went fine. However, upon starting games that require a system upgrade, I get the error 002 blue screen of death. Did I do something wrong somewhere?

I'm not sure if the Wii's parental controls cover the update button, but I think they do, but you will end up passwording a lot of other stuff too by doing that.

You can use StartPatch to disable the updating mechanism, though. Instructions for its use are detailed on the page for avoiding disc updates. In this case, you want to set the option that disables updates period.

Possibly. Go back into StartPatch and remove all changes, then try again. Then again, depending on the method you used to upgrade to 4.2, you may be missing some vital IOSes that the discs would be installing for you. The best option might be to allow one of the discs to upgrade you and then re-enable StartPatch. There are no discs updates at the current time that are dangerous as long as your HBC is up to date.

I used DOP-Mii, as SafeUploader kept failing out at the same point. I'll give StartPatch another try.

EDIT: Removed StartPatch changes and re-installed them, but same result. So you're saying if I let the system update via disc, my Homebrew Channel will remain intact (it is up to date)?

Yes. It is actually safe to upgrade normally, and that's why I specify it as the preferred way of updating. It's probably best to use a game with 4.2 (e.g., SMG2) but a game with 4.3 is fine too.

Okay, thanks. I was concerned as the GAF Idiot's Guide site still says not to upgrade to 4.3, so I was hesitant to go ahead with it.

Ok, so I like booted my Nintendo Wii up for the first time in like... 18 months (don't ask). I'm still on version 3.3u (what does the "u" stand for?). I'm intrigued about this HomeBrew stuff and I'm tempted to try it myself. Quick question, should I hesitate at all in downloading the 4.3 update? I do own a copy of Super Smash Bros.: Brawl, if that helps. I don't know if there is any improvements to the Wii OS since 3.3u, but I would like to get back into Wii Shop to see if there is any cool new and FREE channels. Not sure if I should hold off updated before I decide to try out HomeBrew.

Yes, at least install the HBC first as it is MUCH easier for you to do that than if you were to update first.

The u in 3.3u stands for the US region.

I suggest you take a look through the Upgrade FAQ (although 4.3 is safer than it mentions just at the moment). If you plan to be buying some new games soon, then you should perform the updates on those discs after installing the HBC. If not, then you can forget about updating altogether and just upgrade the Wii Shop if you like.

I've got a Japanese Wii, but I would like to play some US region games without having to buy another Wii. Is there a "Homebrew" program that allows me to bypass region?

May I suggest putting the "For a good starting page to work out what you need, or if you are clueless, really dumb and/or don't know what you want to do with homebrew, click here" link at the top of the page? As it is now, you have to scroll down to see it, and I'd imagine 99% of the people that use the site for the first time need that link. Being met with it at the top of the page instead of what to them is indecipherable homebrew jargon would be a big help I think.

Awesome! Thank you!

I'll try this when I get home and then order me some US Wii games if I can get it to work!

I'm having an issue with USB loader gx. Yesterday I was able to install discs through it just fine. Today I went to install a couple more from my collection and I got a message saying 'disc error'. They are brand new discs.

Has anybody else had this problem?
