I've been reading the tutorial about BootMii, but I still don't understand. How can it unbrick a system?

If you have an old enough Wii to have it installed in boot2, then it is the first thing the Wii runs. If you have a backup from when the Wii was working fun you can thus undo any brick (provided that whatever caused the brick did not alter boot2). Having it as an IOS is significantly less useful, but still handy for reverting your Wii back to an older time in case you screwed up something minor but can still access the Wii Menu.

Damn it, my Wii was bought last year. I wonder if I should even bother to hack it, since I wouldn't be able to restore it if something went wrong (and knowing my luck and lack of technical expertise, it will).

Follow the steps in the tutorial, which are near impossible to mess up, and you won't brick it.
 
What hard drive is everyone using for the USB loader? I'm looking at the WD 320 or 500GB Passport right now. The 500GB is only $4 more than the 320GB. Any tips for the best pick?

EDIT: Ordered the 320GB after checking some other sites for compatibility. The 500GB sold out from Amazon before I could order it, and it seems this line has been discontinued. :(

Problem is, what'll happen when I buy Nintendo's next game, say, Skyward Sword, and there is a mandatory firmware update? Reading up on what happens, it seems like every new update just deletes any homebrew applications and, if you registered your Wii on Nintendo's site, bans it from any forms (I imagine it's Club Nintendo?). Could anyone confirm that this won't happen? If there's a good chance it may, is there any way to still update the firmware and keep all the homebrew stuff? Thanks.

If you ordered a WD, you might need to disable the Smartware program that is on the HDD. Keep in mind that is to disable, the program is still going to be inside and taking a few gigs; but prevents some incompatibility problems that it (apparently) causes (like how it rebuilds data/files every time it's turned off).

You can always follow (or wait) when it comes to updating the Wii; by waiting for Clipper's tutorial posted on here and the wiki. In any case, there are applications (like Priiloader, Starpatch) which you can use to disable disc updates. I haven't heard anything of being banned from Club Nintendo or anything. You can still use it to upload your playtime to the Nintendo Channel.

Installing Homebrew on recent firmware is kinda tricky, but doable. Mostly because you need specific games to do it and specific files (and under 4GB SD -not SDHC- cards). Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Yugioh, Lego Indy I;...follow Clipper's instructions on the Wiki and you'l be fine.

While new updates will probably delete the HBC again, a newer HBC will be released soon after. There are ways to play new games without updating as specified by fernoca, too. If you don't know what he means by the Wiki and my tutorial, just look up to the Mario picture above. It contains help on all you need to know about avoiding updates on discs and so on. Also, for any new games that you might be concerned about, just check here in this thread. You can guarantee that if there is a new update, we will be discussing it within this thread. I also put big warnings on the front page of the Wiki whenever there is a dangerous update, either online or on disc, so you can check there too.

The thing you heard about Club Nintendo is utter rubbish. Where did you hear it? The only thing that will get your console banned from anything right now is using cheats in online games. Having the HBC installed or using homebrew apps for moral purposes has not resulted in a single banning as far as I have heard. The only negative effect installing the HBC on your system will have is that your warranty is voided.
 
Better late than never. I was wondering why LEGO Batman on top of movers and shakers on Amazon.co.uk and low and behold, turns out a buffer overflow exploit exists.

Shame it won't stay cheaper than the other options for long (as in a couple of days) by the looks of things
will there ever be an EU port of Smash Stack,Brawl is stupidly cheaper over here...
 
Are there any save game managers that work with the homebrew wiki's method of installing IOS249? Any I download from the homebrew browser crash. I think it is because they don't expect it to be installed on the 248 slot. Is there a way to edit the meta.xml like with the USB loader?

Yeah, I was worried about the SmartWare, but when I plugged the HDD into my PC, it didn't seem it was enabled yet. So all I had to do was format it to FAT32, and I was good to go.

It took me three days to copy my 52 Wii games. It's something I never want to do again. :(
 
Sorry to double post, but I'm having a bit of trouble.

I am encountering a strange problem with CFG USB Loader. It was working fine for a couple of days, but now the USB Loader (and any game it loads) loses controller input exactly every 10 seconds! If I put the actual disk in, the games play fine. But as soon as I launch the loader I'm guaranteed to lose control, for less than half of a second, every 10 seconds. I tried new batteries and re-synced the controller, but it didn't help. I even reinstalled a fresh download of the loader. If I'm playing a game where I'm running around, it's annoying for the character to keep freezing up. Any ideas why this started now?

Wario Land: Shake It! is actually the worst. Every 10 seconds it pops up on the screen that the controller is disconnected, but the message goes away just a split second later. The light on the controller never goes off, so the Wii is just losing the signal...Again, when I play the actual disk, this does not happen.

EDIT: I tried using IOS224 instead of 248 and the issue is fixed. Why did 248 work for the past couple of days but now has decided to bug out? Has anyone else experienced this?
 
Just bought a new 1TB Seagate external drive and CFG loader can't read it. It does the 30 second countdown and then restarts the wii. I checked the compatibility list and it seems to work fine for other people.

This is the drive:

edit: I seemed to have kind of figured it out. The wii needs to be turned on first, then my hard drive needs to be powered on. Kind of annoying and don't know if there is a workaround for that.
 
I'm using CFG Loader and I need some help.

Aigh.. I'm having the hardest time getting my covers to show up. I first tried just downloading the massive zip of all of them, and they didn't show up on CFG Loader so then I tried to have the CFG Loader Config.exe program do it, and it downloaded them but they still don't show up in the loader. I just get the NO IMAGE graphic for all of them.

My config.txt is in my usb:/usb-loader directory. I do not have a config.txt in my usb:/apps/USBLoader_cfg directory. Should I put it there too? The sample config in there says it just overrides the other so doesn't appear to be necessary. The sample config does show the line "covers = 1" though, which is NOT in my real config. Do I need that line to turn covers on? Well, apparently not cause I tried that and it didn't work.

Ok just for informational purposes, I tried to download the covers from within CFG USB Loader (Wii booted, USB Loader ran) and it starts to download but crashes with an exception error.

please help me get covers working :)
 
alright last post, sorry.

Ok, a google search seems to have told me that the COVERS need to be on a FAT32 drive, they can't come from NTFS, even though the Wii games can load from there. right?

So, I moved them over to the SD card and changed the config.txt as follows:

covers_path = sd:/usb-loader/covers

and changed all the others

covers_path_2d = sd:/usb-loader/covers/2d
covers_path_3d = sd:/usb-loader/covers/3d
covers_path_disc = sd:/usb-loader/covers/disc
covers_path_full = sd:/usb-loader/covers/full

since I figured that should work. I put the covers in the sd card in the usb-loader/covers directory as well as the 2d directory. I had no style listed so I assume it would pull from the covers or the covers/2d directory only.

no dice.

so I am stumped.

Is there a reason they wouldn't load from my sd card? I did a properties on the SD card in Windows and it say the file system was "FAT" ... should that be FAT32 only? is that why?

I just got a new Wii as my old one died somehow and I lost my Brawl save file which was near 100%. For the Homebrew Channel I found a program called Savegave Manager GX which can import specially saved files through this program but all of the Smash saves on wiisave.com seem to be in an old unsupported data.bin file. Can someone with the homebrew channel please do me the favor of copying and sending me their somewhat completed Brawl file my way? I would be eternally grateful. I'll watch this thread and my PM's if anyone is willing to help out a fellow gafbrewer. :)
 
Im getting a new external hdd the old one was wbfs and I want the new one to be FAT the conversion page seems complicated, can't I just use wbfs manager to rip ISO's on to my PC then just copy those ISO's to the new FAT drive?
 
I've been having issues playing videos with WiiMC recently, it stops to buffer every few seconds ever since I got a new 16 GB SDHC stick (Sandisk) to replace my old 2GB stick (which was also a Sandisk). Does WiiMC not like SDHC cards, or could my new stick be fake/damaged? Or maybe the problem is something completely different?
EDIT - looks like the problem isn't the memory stick -- I just tried out WiiMC on my old stick and it still stutters constantly. I even tried an older version of WiiMC that I know worked before, and it still isn't working. What in the fuck could have possibly caused it to completely stop working for no reason??

To be honest your "solution" sounds more complicated than just using the conversion tools.

You should probably give the wiki another good read because the process of switching from wbfs to FAT is incredibly simple, way simpler than what you want to do...

And low and behold we now have LEGO Star Wars as well. Would somebody please think of the Children who now won't be able to afford that game once it goes for silly money due to some people hoarding all the copies for eBay purposes. Also, I can't help but think why can't they wait for a firmware update before revealing their buffer overflow exploit (that said the reason Hackmii released this one is someone else is working on one). It would be better in the long run as it would mean more updates until all exploits are fixed (though that said didn't 4.3 come out after the LEGO Indiana Jones exploit).

The data.bin is the encrypted file rather than the unencrypted files the savegame manager wants. To use data.bin it should either copy through the system menu (I might be wrong but I remember with some games you can get disable no copy cheats which of course when the save gets written with the cheat disabled no copy comes back) or if its still greyed out you'll have to use startpatch to patch the system menu to disable 'no copy' then just put the files in the right place on an SD card and copy.
 
Is there a homemade app that let's you play discs from other regions easily, or is that something only Freeloader can do?

I have a Wii that's been sitting in the corner, on the floor, collecting dust. I just can't get myself to play in 480p on my TV, it looks too blurry and pixelated...

With that said, I was thinking of trying the Dolphin emulator.

Do Donkey kong Country and Twilight Princess work well yet on Dolphin ? If yes, I'll definitely go ahead and purchase them today (yes, yes, I know, I never played Twilight Princess...)

Is there a list somewhere of games that run perfectly on the emulator ?

But to be quick:
DK looks good (provided you change one option in the emulator which you might have changed anyway due performance) and works well but from what I remember due to Zelda TP looking so bad in the first place (some areas have horrid textures, maybe due to compression to fit on Gamecube?) this one doesn't really work well. I think Zelda TP also had audio problems.

As for compatability lists. You can find various ones on the internet but the problem with something updated daily its impossible for anyone to keep long-term track. The best lists say which bulid the game was tested on/list which bulid it worked perfectly on (tpyically for emulators of this nature games get broken all the time) so its best to try yourself really thne have a look around to see if anyone knows good settings or whatever.

Well I figured out that the problem is with my hard drive, since I just moved my movie over to my SDHC card and now it's playing fine. I think the problem started after I updated my Homebrew Channel to 1.0.8, is there any reason that update could have messed up USB support somehow?

Obviously, seeing as you are able to run the HackMii Installer, you have a method for launching homebrew. However, if the Hackmii Installer is providing that message, then it sounds like you have done something very stupid to your Wii such as installing a dodgy update from an untrusted source (e.g., Waninkoko).

Try updating the Wii from a game which includes a 4.2 update. You could also try using Dop-Mii to install real versions of IOS58 and/or IOS61 from Nintendo (either of these should help).
 
Is there a way to copy the contents of one external hard drive to another for the purposes for config usb loader?

I'd looking to upgrade my Wii's current USB hard drive to a larger one and I was hoping to avoid having to re-rip everything.

If your current drive is formatted as FAT32 or NTFS, just copy the files across. If it's WBFS, then use this opportunity to move to FAT32 or NTFS by following the instructions here.
 
Hm, so I finally got around to trying Prime Trilogy from my ripped copy instead of the disc. Anyone else ever have problems with it crashing as soon as you select a game and it begins to load?

It crashes because it uses separate executables for the menu and each of the three games. To play it you need to go to the game's options in CUSB, then select Alternate DOL and pick the executable for the game you want to play. (You can also set it to have the game ask you which executable to use every time you start it from CUSB.) But if you do this then you're forced to play the games on Normal difficulty.
 
I have two wii consoles here in the UK.

One PAL machine with BBC iPlayer installed.

I was wondering if its possible to get iPlayer up and running on my Japan import HBC machine.

Probably not unless you were to change the region of the Wii, which is very risky and more likely to brick the Wii than get iPlayer going.

Can CFG usb Loader use the wii Lan adaptor which in turn is connected to a NAS.
 
My nephew took my wii away for the weekend and must have run a game that updated it. Now I get a IOS249 is a stub error in CFG loader and his ben10 game keeps locking up (when playing from disc). What steps should I retrace to get it working again? I can't even remember which IOSes I originally installed, it's been so long!

edit: re-reading the wiki (I originally followed it to the letter) I found this
Note that the 249 slot is not actually used in our installation (it was in previous versions of the tutorial). If installed there, discs with 4.2 and 4.3 updates will still ask you to update, even if you are already there. This makes things slightly easier.
That's most likely what happened. Still not sure where to start re-installing though :/
 
I'm trying to transfer the New Mario Bros savegame from my girlfriend's wii to mine, but when I try to copy it from the SD card to my wii it gives me the message "the data was not copied"...could be that she's running 4.3 firmware on her wii and I'm still 3.6?
there's some utility that I can use to solve this problem without upgrading my wii?

You would need to be selective on which IOS base you use for the cIOS as some don't like USB peripherals. 56 and 37 (the default ones in the tutorial) should be OK. I'm not sure if the NAS would mess things up, but if it works in the Wii normally, it should work while using Cfg too.

That's most likely what happened. Still not sure where to start re-installing though :/
It doesn't matter what was installed previously. Just treat your Wii as new and go through the steps to install the IOSes that the tutorial recommends now.

It won't be a firmware thing. Make sure you have at least created a save for the game on your own Wii first by playing the game as you can't copy saves of games you have never played.

If that fails, you could try SaveGame Manager.

well, the save was originally on my console, then we brought it to her's and now I'm trying to copy the updated file to my console, so I'm pretty sure that that's not the case. SaveGame Manager can be used to move savegames from SD to wii?

also, if I try to update the console to 4.0 using a disc update will I risk the brick of the console? it's better to format, upgrade and then reinstall everything back?

Yes, Savegame Manager is for copying saves back and forth, ignoring the no-copy flag and stuff.

I don't think it's possible to do a 4.0 upgrade from disc as I don't think there was ever a game that had the 4.0 upgrade on it. However, a 4.1 upgrade from disc should be perfectly fine provided that you first ensure you have your HBC up to date and perhaps install the boot2v4 update manually as per the updating steps on the tutorial. You will also have to follow the steps for updating IOS249, IOS222 and Cfg again afterwards if you haven't done those recently. All steps are in the tutorial of course.

Yeah, but my savefile is in the data.bin format, so it won't work with Savegame Manager T_T
I guess I'll try updating my wii to the new firmware and see if that was the problem...thanks :)

OK, good. I was playing online and suddenly got an automated message from Capcom stating the use of unauthorized devices to play the game online will result in a ban... strange, but nothing seemed to happen. Certainly not playing with anything other than a vanilla copy of the game.

No, the Wii64/WiiSX team just updated their blog last week. http://emulatemii.com/ They've been rewriting their DynaRec to improve compatibility. Most games run at full speed already in WiiSX Beta 2/Wii64 1.1, provided that they actually work of course.
 
How brick proof is Bootmii?

"BootMii allows you to make a backup of your Wii's NAND so that you can recover from almost any type of brick."

That worries me.

But it also says
"Your Wii might become bricked if you install dangerous applications or install spurious updates"

If I'm only following these and only these directions:
Install the Homebrew Channel
Install IOS236
Install IOS249
Install Hermes' IOS222/223
Install a USB Loader
Then it's 100% safe?
