I heard somewhere that using homebrew to actually play DVDs on my Wii is bad for the optical drive. Is there any truth to that?

Outside of emulators and playing games from a hard drive is there a reason to homebrew-enable your Wii?
Things from the Gaf Tutorial Wiki are safe. I wouldn't put potentially dangerous things on there (which is why I have avoided UNEEK/SNEEK for so long).DeathNote said:How brick proof is Bootmii?
"BootMii allows you to make a backup of your Wii's NAND so that you can recover from almost any type of brick."
That worries me.
But it also says
"Your Wii might become bricked if you install dangerous applications or install spurious updates"
If I'm only following these and only these directions:
Then it's 100% safe?
I believe the warnings are valid. The overwhelming majority of complaints I've seen of people complaining about dead optical drives are also people that play their games off burnt optical discs. The rate of failure amongst these people seems to be quite high compared to those using only retail Wii discs. While this doesn't necessarily translate to retail DVDs, I would recommend just giving them a miss too.The_Technomancer said:I heard somewhere that using homebrew to actually play DVDs on my Wii is bad for the optical drive. Kk, thanks. Its annoying having to watch all my DVDs on my laptop, but I guess I'll make due.Clipper said:I believe the warnings are valid. Don't you have a 360 or PS3? Or any old DVD player? The Wii DVD playback is terrible anyway. Menus often don't work and it's unstable.The_Technomancer said:I heard somewhere that using homebrew to actually play DVDs on my Wii is bad for the optical drive. Is there any truth to that?
If you mean backing them up to external device (say, SD card). Cleandump is good.Vagabundo said:What's the current state of Gamecube backups for the Wii.
I have a tonnes of old Gamecube games that I have been hankering to play again (RE1 and Windwalker - I never finished you), but my Wii is now pretty inaccessible for regularly changing disks. I'd love to rip all my GC games and play using the Classic Controller - if possible. I use a gamecube controller if it was not.

Holy shit I didn't know that, with Ocarina? I must find such code!KarmaCow said:Well it let me play DKC:R with a classic controller, so there's that.
Is there any audio? Can you turn it on or off with the Wiimote/s? Do you have any other video cables you could test with?brianmcdoogle said:I had the unluckiest day with electronics. There was a power surge that fried my 360, but luckily I have a warranty on it that expires at the end of the month and I can get it replaced.
The Wii? Not so much (it's a launch unit). Anyway, I was in the middle of changing the IOS 249 for the usb loader when this happened (I told you bad luck), and now the Wii won't display any graphics whatsoever. No black screen... nothing.
Question:
Since I don't know if the IOS caused this failing on the Wii, or the power outage, I just want to know if Nintendo will do a repair on the system. If it is a result of the power surge, I assume they would, but I don't know if the IOS was installed partially when the power surge happened and Nintendo would detect it. Looking around, it looks like they might fix it, but I really don't want to lose my VC purchases since I've bought quite a few.
Even bootmii won't load, which makes me think it is the power surge more than anything (yet the light still turns on, or green. odd).
Thanks, and your guide was a great help.
Does the USB Loader show up in the Homebrew Channel? If so, just place the forwarder WAD file in the WAD folder and run your preferred wad manager and install it.Foov said:Hopefully I can get some help here - I'm trying to install a forwarder for usb loader - following the instructions on the wiki. I'm having trouble when I get to step 9 - select to launch "/apps/InstForwarder/boot.dol" - I don't see that option in my homebrew channel and am not sure where I went wrong. I dl'ed the wad manager file and moved/changed it's name to boot.dol in the specified sub directory as I think the instructions called for. But it's more than likely I misunderstood something there. If anyone can help it would be appreciated thanks!
Note that the dol will probably be near the end of the list of homebrew, so check there (switching pages if need be). HBC sorts all the apps that include meta.xml info before the ones that don't. It will be just listed as /apps/InstForwarder/boot.dol. Make sure you don't have a meta.xml file in there for another app or something as it would show up as that if you did.Foov said:Hopefully I can get some help here - I'm trying to install a forwarder for usb loader - following the instructions on the wiki. My guess is that this is a problem with the way GX installs games. Switch to Cfg or Wiiflow. Also, don't bother with WBFS formats any more. FAT32 or NTFS are the way to go.mug said:Also, I've been having a problem installing games using the USB Loader GX app. While I'm sure that it's normal that installing a game runs a rate of 2mb/s for some reason the HDD will fill up although I'm sure there is some free space. Just to be specific, even with free space (80%) and games installed, all the sudden it'll show 0% free space and won't allow me to install games. Which will require me to reformat and start the process all over again.
I see, I guess I'm using some older programs. However won't FAT32 partitions limit the size of files that I place on there? Sorry I'm still a little new to this homebrew scene but you're suggesting another USB loader in addition to another backup manager?Clipper said:My guess is that this is a problem with the way GX installs games. You don't have any need for a backup manager. You can rip the discs straight to the drive using Cfg itself. File size has no bearing as the disc images are automatically split at the size boundaries (i.e., a large game will be split into two files on the drive).mug said:I see, I guess I'm using some older programs. Cool, that's pretty much what I was looking for. As for ripping the disc or xfering backups to the hdd from my computer I'd prefer the latter as it is a LOT faster.Clipper said:You don't have any need for a backup manager. If you want to migrate the games you already have to the new partition, there is a page in the GAF tutorial for that.
You're also supporting the acts of the pirates uploading that content...mug said:Cool, that's pretty much what I was looking for. As for ripping the disc or xfering backups to the hdd from my computer I'd prefer the latter as it is a LOT faster.
If you are still using the original USB Loader, then yes, that is your reason. THe other loaders have been fixing those sorts of bugs for well over a year or two now.harriet the spy said:I have been trying to backup wii games using USB loader, but oftentimes, the backup freezes. I think I am using wakinko USB loader (pretty ugly interface that looks like water waves). It for instance froze with Little King Story and Trauma Center: new blood.
Is it because of the usb loader I am using, or the ios i have installed, or..?
Thanks for any help
edit: when the backup freeze I have no other choice but to reboot. I am a bit surprised that there is no "corrupt" data file. It's like nothing ever happened. Does USB loader clean at boot, or am I slowly filling the disk with crap?
You don't have to update the Wii to update the shop. The instructions are to upgrade the shop alone are here.Mafro said:Does the most recent shopping channel update do anything to the homebrew channel? Is it safe for me just to update? There's a few WiiWare demos I fancy trying.

Isn't Dodonpachi a ST-V (aka: Saturn) game? For proper Saturn emulation (SSF) you need at least a 2GHz Core2Duo. MAME's STV core is much worse (and buggy). There's no way the Wii would handle it (I'm not even sure the PS3 or 360 could do it). Also, SSF is closed source, x86 and Windows only.Dash Kappei said:Has emulation improved on MAME/Arcade/Neo-Geo/Saturn/PSX?
Is it possible to MAME something like Dodonpachi at 100% emulation? When I gave up on both Wii MAME/the other MAME pj you couldn't even play Ghost 'n Goblins (thank god for VC Arcade) or Ghouls 'n Ghost because of raster problems, let alone Vendetta/Crime Fighters 2... What about simple stuff with samples like Donkey Kong or even simpler games like Bubble Bobble, are those 100% with sound?
Is it now possible to play Neo-Geo games with a classic controller? You couldn't the last I looked into GeoGX, no matter how hard I tried.
What about Saturn shooters?
There are a few proposed solutions. One is to try other base IOSes (test with IOS247 and IOS224 if you installed according to the GAF tutorial). Another is to install a new version of Waninkoko's IOS that has been specially modified. I don't full trust that method yet, though, so I won't provide links. Check with the other IOS bases first and let us know if it works.Foov said:I'm in the middle of ripping all my games to a hd using CFG USB loader. So far so good, it does seem a bit glitchy though - every now and then the menu just seems to freeze and I have to hard reset my system to get things going again. I'm using a 500gb WD Elements portable drive, can't find any specific problems to do with it online.
Also - the only game that so far has given me any issue is Twilight Princess - it's weird, seems to run fine but when I am just walking or running around as link after about maybe 15-20 paces he just stops moving altogether for a second, and then will start again. It's almost like the connection to the control has stopped for a moment. Is this problem familiar to anyone?

There's a few rules, but they all depend on your drive type, which really ends up making trial and error the best starting point.Foov said:247 made the problem worse, but 224 seems to have fixed it. Thanks! Is there a resource anywhere online that states which IOS's work best with which games? Or is it mostly trial and error?

Cfg supports all the formats (and was the first to). It's up to you which you choose. A comparison of the various formats can be found on the Cfg page of the tutorial.Dr. Spaceman said:I had no idea the community had moved away from WBFS. I'll be updating the tutorial for the other Lego games soon (both Lego Batman and Lego Star Wars have hacks now, but they are also as rare as Lego Indiana Jones now, which makes them a little moot).kurtrussell said:I hacked my red 25th Anniversary model using Bathack - (removed link as I'm unsure if it's a banned site, but just google lego batman softmod wii)
so that works on 4.3 apparently.....
Some questions if you could be so kind, GAF:
1) With Mame, how far can I go given the limitations of the Wii? Would I be stuck with Pacman and Galaga or could I push it as far as ChaseHQ? How about Daytona?
2) Is there currently a good way to play my import Gamecube games? I have configurable bootloader working great and have popped all my Wii games onto a USB drive - from reading around it looks like I cannot yet do this with my Gamecube games, but can I at least get around the region locking?
3) Why on earth are Nintendo taking so long to chuck out a 4.4 update? Are they effectively turning a blind-eye to homebrew?
unplug any gamecube controllersFoov said:Are there any tricks to getting Goldeneye working with CFG USB loader? The controller is having weird issues - the games loads fine but doesn't recognize button inputs. I get to the "press any button to start" screen and nothing happens - the only button that does work is the home button to get me out of the game. I've tried different ios's - 224, 247, 248, but none of those have helped. Works fine when I run it from the disc, but I'd like to get it working with the usb.
I've noticed a couple of other games that do that (Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Sonic Colors), and it's really annoying. I wonder what the reason is for developers to do that.Htown said:unplug any gamecube controllers
for some reason Goldeneye defaults to only recognizing the GC controller when it's plugged in; disconnect it and your remote/nunchuk will work fine.
