GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Apologies for not reading the whole of the thread as I've not had any problems since first modding my Wii way back when.

Has anyone been able to run Dragon Quest 25th Collection on a PAL Wii? My Wii is all modded and USB Loader works for other NTSC games (Captian Rainbow & PopnMusic) but DQ25th either gives me a green screen, nothing on screen or red and black virtual boy mode.

This is all using rgb scart but if I swap to component cables I get washed out colour when forcing Pal50.

I've tried various settings but with all the combinatinos (and various loaders) I've lost 3 hours tonight and am getting bored.......

Cheers.

If you have component cables, does your TV support progressive scan (i.e., 480p)? If so, you should have your Wii set up to 480p and you can force the game to 480p by choosing to force video to NTSC and turn the Video Patch option to All. This is the best compatibility mode for forcing NTSC games to be displayed on PAL Wiis.

D'oh! Should have asked sooner. Totally forgot the Wii was set to Pal, once I swapped out my scart cable and changed that setting everything looks fine. Wife is now playing via USB Loader so all I need to do is set up a channel for ease of access.

Thanks Clipper!

This might be a dumb questions, but I have not used my Wii (NTSC) for close to a year when I last modded it to run PAL games (Xenoblade)... everything was quite peachy back then, but today I took it out of storage, plugged everything back on and BootMii is giving me a black screen. The disc slot pulses blue and the only thing I can do it a hard reset the Wii.

Any idea what I might have done wrong?

Edit: Scratch that, I figured it out. I'm dumb, turns out I had removed the SD card prior to storing the Wii and didn't put it back in.

So gaf, I recently got a computer capable of running dolphin and I'm using cfg loader to try to rip some games to my ntfs usb flash drive so i can put them on my computer. I followed the tutorial, but I'm having some problems getting the games to install. When I go to install Xenoblade or NSMB wii it says opening dvd...ok, then says wbfs panic: error reading disc. This is in my cgf.txt...

ntfs_write = 1
fat_split_size = 0
install_partitions = iso

Furthermore, Resident Evil 4 Wii edition and Kirbys epic yarn do not give me this error and start installing a .iso to the flash drive, but then they hang. RE hung at about 14% and KEY hung at about 15%. Any ideas gaf?? Thanks

I've got a couple of problems with my wii homebrew

1- bootmii does not work anymore, it was boot2 before and i read somewhere that deleting SD:/Bootmii/armboot.bin would stop it, the guy forgot to mention that it completely stops it from working, now in homebrew channel i cant even start bootmii.

2- Whats the best IOS? this is driving me nuts, im trying to use savemanager to transfer my PAL xenoblade save file to SD, then i'd use an hex editor and change it to NTSC but i cant even boot savemanager. All wii homebrew i've experienced so far is very very unstable. I tried hermes's V5.1 installer and 224. doesnt boot savemanager any better than the previous ones.

3- I patched xenoblade PAL with the 30 fps patch, did that screw up the savefile that it does not recognize it as PAL? Because xenoblade disc (US), does not recognize the save files, using this http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/960564-xenoblade-chronicles/62466640=guide i repacked the 3 monado files to ntsc, sent back to SD, back to wii memory and it still does not detect the saves.

4- i dont want to lose 60+ hours of gameplay :(

I can't find the info on the wiki for this so if anyone could help me I would appreciate it. I already have the homebrew installed. What do I need to install to rip my games onto a harddrive?

Edit: Nvm, it would just be the USBLoader I need to rip it seems.

1. Use the BootMii installer app to reinitialize the SD card. It's fairly easy to find this option in the menus IIRC.

2. d2x is the best for most things. Not sure about Savegame Manager.

3. Sorry, can't help on this one. I've never tried converting the Xenoblade save.

4. I hope you can find a solution, mate.

Not sure how to fix that one, sorry.

Hey Clipper, do you know if it's possible to do a NAND backup, and then delete your Shop Channel account so you can switch its region, and then later restore to your old NAND backup and keep your purchases and stuff? I ask because I have a feeling that I'm going to have to change my Shop Channel's region in order to play DQ10 (you can buy time with Wii points in the shop), unless SE surprises me and accepts foreign credit cards directly, and I read that you have to delete your account on the channel before changing its region, which permanently revokes your access to your purchases.

I have one quick question again, it says when you're installing the Usb loader it asks you to select the drive and partition. Does this mean you can't switch hard drives later? I have a pretty small drive for now but I'd eventually like to get a bigger one to store all my wii games.

I believe that restoring the backup would allow you to play the games you had downloaded beforehand, but I'm fairly sure you would not regain access to download them again as if they were purchases. I'm not fully sure, though, as this is one of those things that is just not worth the risk to investigate the benefits.

Don't worry. You can change your choice of partition within the app and save that choice as the new default. If the partition type you select originally isn't present when the app starts, it will also prompt you for a new one.

I think for what you want to do, NAND emulation might be the best choice. You don't have to take the risk of making any changes to your real NAND, and you can switch back and forth between your real NAND and the emulated one just by removing/inserting your SD card or USB drive.

Ah, ok. If that's the case then that's fine. Thanks again for the help!

So I just have another quick question, when installing a game, is it normal to have it take a long time for 3D cover to download if you tell it to download covers? The flat cover has [----] 68467 OK as the last line but the 3D one has [----- and no right bracket or OK. Could it have frozen or is this normal? It's been a couple minutes on this but the other one went really quick and the background music is still playing so I'm not sure if I should still wait or if it froze my system trying to get the cover art.

That's very interesting. It seems you can create a whole environment already in another region? It sounds kinda complicated, though. I'll give it a look-over and see.

EDIT: It seems like it doesn't matter, due to the way the Wii shop works. If a device is associated with an account already, it can't become associated with another one no matter what the region is. So you have to delete the account entirely first, and in this case, I actually don't think there's anything I can do to retain my NA shop purchases should I change. I guess I'll just have to hope it won't come to that.

I think I may have asked this before here and never gotten a response but is there any sort of homebrew app to rip NGC memory cards or copy saves to an SD card?

It can take a while sometimes, but if the tick marks stop appearing, then your network has probably failed or caused the netcode to go into an infinite loop. Your best option is probably to reset the Wii at that point. There is a cancel button (I think it's B) during the download process, but I think it only works between images, IIRC.

Official Nintendo memory cards are locked - essentially there is one app that does support it through a hacky sort of backdoor, however there's a chance of card corruption so I've never trusted it.

Pity, because I'd love to play on the F Zero AX tracks using a completed save. No way would I be able to unlock them myself.

Can I somehow force VC games to boot in NTSC mode instead of PAL60? I wanted to capture my playthrough of FF6, but my capture card can't work with PAL60.

Above and beyond the problems with Nintendo memory cards, F-Zero's main save is also encrypted, locked to a particular memory card. Maybe cheat codes are the answer.

P.S. update-5 of DM fixed the problem I was having with Rogue Leader, and also restores the ability to boot retail discs.

Big shame. I wanted to transfer my complete GC saves for Dolphin. So that USB/B NGC card is still the only way to do that then. Lame.

Its actually not that bad. The toughest parts of the game are the story chapters, which I can't even finish on easy with any confidence. Beating the cups on master difficulty is a cakewalk in comparison. The hardest one is the Sapphire cup.

That said. I've looked at backing up my F-Zero save before. No way I'm doing that, as I don't want to run the risk of losing it.

DIOS MIOS tutorial page is up now that I finally got it working on my Wii. Please let me know of any difficulties and make sure you pay attention to the fact that you need to manually install a new version of Cfg too.

Now I just need to sort out a weird grounding issue that has caused my Wii's video to go funny whenever the hard drive is plugged into it... I really hate that this would happen now out of all times...

Edit:Hmm, I'm actually having trouble launching games too. Perhaps I don't have this complete yet. Trying with a different game (takes a while to install, unfortunately)

Edit 2: If anybody tries out the tutorial, can they let me know if it is working for you? I think I might have issues with my Gamecube installation (possibly due to a partial attempt of getting DML working ages ago) as I can't play GCN games atm, even without DM installed

Edit 3: Well, fixed my Wii so it plays games normally, now to get it working with DM again

Edit 4: And got it working. Seems to be all good. Still gotta figure out my hard drive issue with video, but that's unrelated to DIOS MIOS, I'm sure.

So, I was in the middle of trying to install an app that would let me play import. I never finished because I have a filled HDD on my computer and that's the only computer that's mine. Anyways, the question is can I still play my non import Wii/GCN games through the wii disk channel without having to finish installing the app? Also, can I still play Wiiware and VC games? This'll determine if I'm taking my wii on vacation.

okay, i gotta check back on the guide for this, but quick question to start with: my wii's proper hacked and all (HBC, USB loader etc) but i cant get back onto the shop without an update, what's the best way to jump right into a workaround? i wanna make sure i'm all setup for whatever transfer process the WU has for my VC titles and all.

edit: found it here because i'm really dumb!

I can't think of anything in the tutorial that would stop you playing your normal stuff and purchased stuff except for the DIOS MIOS stuff I added today (which only fools with GCN playback). Given that you haven't touched that yet, you should be fine.

Well, you edited in a response between me reading your post and replying to it, it seems. In any case, at this stage, I more recommend just updating the Wii normally. It's safer and won't break anything, and you'll need to update the firmware when we do get around to the transfer process...

ah, thanks for your reply, man - i gotta check that stuff then, as i use my Wii a lot for region-free GC playing. you're sure a regular update won't delete HBC and the rest of it? i thought that was the big reason to avoid said updates, id hate to see any of my homebrew stuff lost.

The current versions of everything will not be replaced by the currently available system updates. Nintendo gave up on trying to dampen homebrew a while back.

Clipper, your FAQ says "Can I play GCN games without GCN memory cards? No.", yet one of the advertised features of DIOS MIOS is the ability to emulate Gamecube memory cards from the SD card.

*about to install DIOS MIOS so can't comment from own experience*

edit - A handy chap has even put a youtube tutorial here

*still can't comment from own experience yet*

edit 2 - looking into it further, some games work, some games don't.

*still can't comment from own experience GAWD BRO GET OFF MY BACK formatting to FAT32 and re-transferring all my games over USB takes time okay?*

edit 3 - Also I'm getting the trying to install to SD card thing, but your alternative CFG USB Loader link gives an error 400.
edit 4 - Copy+pasting rather than clicking fixed the error 400 thing.

edit 5 - Even with the alternative .dol, it still tries to install to SD.
edit 6 - Figured it out. Had to set DML version to "DM" in settings.

edit 7 - Aaaawwwwww yeah I'm playing me some Gamecubes off the harddrives

Yeah, I knew about the saves on SD thing, but I can't figure out how to get Cfg to do it, yet. Perhaps it's DML only? And yeah, I had done that DM thing but wasn't sure if it was necessary. Thanks for confirming, I'll add that bit in.

It's a game-specific setting in CFG USB Loader v70r37 (I think r35 from your guide too but I'd have to check). Setting name is "NMM". I'll be testing it tonight when I get home.

Finally got it to work.

I love you Clipper.

Edit: Okay so I successfully installed SSBM and Metroid Prime, but everytime I try to launch the games from Configurable USB Loader, it hangs on a GCLoader 0.4 screen... halp

Damn the new version of genplus-gx is awesome! Sega/Mega CD compatibility is pretty much 100%...except for the lack of CD audio. For a lot of the best games such as Popful Mail, Lunar 2, and Snatcher, most of their music is through PSG anyway. Iv'e been waiting for this emulation for years on my Wii and am really happy to see it finally arrive.

From research, it's seeming like GCLoader might be an MIOS patch that allows execution of GameCube Homebrew. It might be conflicting with DIOS MIOS, which also deals with patching MIOS. I suggest you reinstall a plain MIOS with Dop-Mii and then reinstall DIOS MIOS over the top.

You should post a working link to the v70r35.dol in the guide and let people know they can just replace it with the boot.dol over their old one in apps/usb-loader ... because I got stuck at this step without any written guidance for a while.

This is because i installed DIOS MIOS but didnt update CFG and so the Option for a DML Version wasnt available.

Ugh. I think my wii's fan busted. Its over heated and shut off a few times. And the fan refuses to come on.

I was thinking of sending it back to nintendo to see what they could do (I don't want to by the new one that doesn't play gamecube games) but I'm worried since i've messed with all the ISO and but bootmii on it.

Also its off warranty, so I'd have to pay. Is there anyway I can hide or uninstall the bootmii and soft-modded stuff till I get it back? or is there another option to fix the fan.

He means you rip both discs separately. When you need to switch discs, you first save, then reset the console and start by launching the other disc. I don't know if it works or not, but it probably should, unless BKO requires you to switch discs without saving...

I might give DIOS MIOS a shot, because I've got about 200GB of un-partioned space just sitting on my Wii USB drive ready to rip GC games.

My only question is, is there full support for all the "problem games" yet? Namely the audio in certain games not working, last I heard it wasn't a big issue but would be nice if this fixed that.

Google "Devolution". It's very much in its early phase of development, but it can play some of the audio streaming games (Crazy Taxi, Eternal Darkness) perfectly and development for the others is ongoing. It's also integrated along with DIOS MIOS into the USB Loaders.

You will need the original GC disc to verify on first boot, but after that, it's diskless"
