GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I'm way late to the Homebrew party so I have a question.

I was able to get Homebrew installed however when I try to install the browser, I keep getting an "Exception DSI" error thing. I'm not entirely sure why or how to fix that? Do I just keep trying to install it and hope it takes eventually?

Alternatively, can I use other things like the Save Game Extractor/Installer without the browser?

I'm kind of a dumbass with this stuff. :(

Yes, you can run those other things with jut the HomeBrew Channel.

Huh, I thought the latest FW update that added the Wii Shop also stubbed a couple cIOSes. Maybe it was just me trying to use USB Loader GX instead of CFG USB Loader, and I didn't have to install the latest d2x cIOS with ios58 base as IOS249 just to play my Skyward Sword backup.... Ah well.

Is there a significant difference between the different IOS bases with the newer cIOSes anyway? Is there a breakdown on the Wiki somewhere?

What do you use them for

56 is now the best choice as it seems to have the best qualities of all the choices. Previously, you might use 37 for compatibility with music games and 57 for speed, but 56 has both features.

The tutorial gives you the following setup:

248 d2xv6 based on 56 - for most things.
247 d2xv6 based on 57 - for Call of Duty: Black Ops and any other games you have trouble with
224 v5.1 based on 37 - Most compatible Hermes' version
Note that this setup is different to the old one which use the 222, 223 and 249 slots. This is to allow discs with updates you have already performed to work without requesting further updates. You can thus safely play retail discs without worrying about overwriting your homebrew setup.

Nope. You should use the latest d2x no matter what. I really should get around to updating the version in the tutorial someday...
 
Stupid question time. I have a game backed up as an ISO. The ISO is 4.something GB. Seems fine. However, I can't extract this onto my USB FAT 32 HD. Winrar does not recognize the ISO. VirtualCloneDrive doesn't recognize it. The file won't transfer directly (FAT 32 doesn't handle files that large), and even if it did, I doubt the USB Loader could load an ISO.

So... I'm stumped :|

fat32 doesnt support single files over 4.00 GB

woah, you mean extract it onto the drive? well, im lost.

Has anyone used the various game exploits to install HBC onto a WiiU yet? I'm going to be doing it soon (assuming I will have to wait for the SSBB levels to fully remove from the save data/SD) and wouldn't mind sharing thoughts/tips on it.
 
Hello I installed homebrew on my wii months back when I try to log in to wii shop I get a message telling me I have to install update if I install the update will my wii be bricked?

I had the same thing happen. I tried to follow the "update safely" part of the tutorial but had problems, so I did the update the Nintendo way. Console was fine, but it removed BootMii. Luckily, I could just click the Homebrew Channel from the Wii Menu then reinstall BootMii.

You can probably try the tutorial's method. My issue (iirc) was simply lack of easy access to a Windows computer to download some necessary files, and you likely do not have this particular hangup. :)
 
Yeah, the normal update method is safe and is what I generally recommend (as evidenced by the statement at the top of the tutorial).
 
I tried to play some N64 games on my homebrew Wii earlier using the emulator but all of the games had issues of one form or another. Blast Corps and Resident Evil 2 were just pretty much borked. Yoshi's Story had lots of visual elements missing. However, the most frustrating issue was with 1080 and Majora's Mask as neither game would recognise input from either the control stick or D pad. I was using the classic controller pro tethered to the Wiimote [obviously].

EDIT: It only occurred to my while typing the above that I hadn't tried a Wiimote and Nunchuk combination so I just tried it. Colour me very surprised but it seems to be working. I can input my name [Link, of course] in Majora's Mask name selection screen at least. Yay! Now I don't have to dig out my N64!

However, if anyone has any input on the CCPro side of things I would be grateful for any help regarding that as I do like the controller and it would feel more like using an N64 controller, I think.

I have only used my CC (not a pro) on the N64 emulator on my Wii, so I'll boot it up and see what I did to get it working!

Thanks :). It looks like it should work okay in the settings but Wiimote and nunchuk is hardly a deal breaker if not.

I just spent awhile playing some 1080 and Mario Kart 64. Talk about nostalgia! I even got smells of the place I was living at the time coming back to me!

Does your 1 controller slot show up blue with a picture of the CC on the main screen?

Just about to boot up 1080 to try it out...


And it works fine with the analog stick on the CC I'm using. Hmm...

Yes, it does. It recognises other button inputs okay but not the stick or D pad so that makes control of the player character rather tricky :).

Hm, so it accepts the CC but not the CCPro? That's racist.jpg.

I'll try it with a Gamecube and Wavebird controller in a bit once I've woken up somewhat and got some of the fog out of my head.

My wii is currently running system menu 4.2E softmodded, but I can't access the shop channel. Is it safe to manually update the shop channel to the latest version (v21) without updating anything else?
 
i has Majora's Mask on VC nao so my controller issue is not so pressing. It accepts the CCPro okay so yay!

However, I installed Dios Mios using Clipper's guide and ripped some Cube games to my hard drive but got the black screen of death when I tried to load them. Is this indicative of merely my hard drive needing to be sorted out as per the guide and once I do that they will play okay? In other words, since Configurable USB Loader recognised the games, ripped them and downloaded covers for them okay, is is safe to assume that the Dios Mios side of things was successfully installed so I only have to resolve the hard drive aspect?
 
What is N64 emulation like on Wii homebrew? I only actually want to play one game, NTSC Wave Race 64 as my HDTV in the games home doesn't have S-Video input for my Japanese N64 and Wave Race 64 cartridge. Figured it would look much better through a component video cable. I would buy on VC but I have a PAL N64 so it sucks for WR64.

i has Wave Race 64 on the Wii VC and the emulation is fine :). Haven't played it recently but from what I remember there's no issues at all with it; it plays beautifully. Haven't played it since I got an HDTV though so bear with me and I'll quickly fire it up to see what it's like.

So Wave Race 64 on Wii VC then. It plays beautifully. No visual or audio glitches to speak of in my quick play. Clearly both the visuals and audio really show their age; the geometry is still really blocky and the racers still have pointy elbows :) but Nintendo did something to the N64 games to improve the visuals for the VC so it is ZOMG!!! not a 100% faithful emulation!!!! Yes well I'll take the nicer visuals thanks. However, once you get racing the gameplay and ohsolovelynostalgia takes over and you won't want to stick pencils in your eyes.

How's that? Now, if you don't mind I have some racing to do!

P.S. I have only ever played the PAL release so I am blissfully ignorant of any inferiority there. It's fine for me but ymmv.

EDIT: Oh and it plays in widescreen. It doesn't look as if it's being stretched by my tv so I presume Nintendo added this in for the VC release since it was never an option on the original N64 release to the best of my knowledge.
 
Yes VC adds 480i/480p to N64 games. It's really beneficial to them, i prefer Virtual console to my N64 for the same game and its more convenient, too. Some however run on 50hz for PAL consoles.
On the homebrew side, for those games that are not on VC, Not64 runs quite a few games and has IR support for GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, giving them a new life for me.

Pleasure :) I really enjoyed my quick playthrough of the first championship earlier. Plus you prodded me to clean out my fridge which was rather appropriate since I had a new freezer delivered earlier.

I think there might be a way of changing your territory but I'm not sure of my facts or if it's safe so hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about in this regard will be able to help.

I think so but it's not something I have ever investigated as that's getting into GAF account bannage territory and I have always restricted myself to the GAF guide as I know it won't lead me astray or into unsafe Wii brickage territory.

Yeah I guess it is dodgy talk, but since I have two versions of Wave Race 64 (US and JPN Shin Vibration Edition) I figured it would be OK to ask.

I guess I could try and find an NTSC Wii on ebay and get an account that way.
 
Hmm, I don't have a clear memory of this. But I tried homebrewing my Wii 2 years ago and installed a black skin for the user interface but now I'm I want it to reverse back to the standard white OS, how can I do that?

I don't have any files on a SD card anymore and is starting from zero.

I'm on firmware 4.2E.

Another thing is I'm trying to install the Homebrew Channel now but I'm just getting a black screen - I didn't get a black screen before uninstalling the old Homebrew Channel I installed 2 years ago.

I'm asked "load boot.dol/elf?" and I say "Yes" and thus getting a black screen..

EDIT:
I just formatted my Wii as well and that didn't remove the black user interface theme. =(
 
Ugh, I need help.

I just started putting my games on the HDD. Did Pandora's Tower, Xenoblade, then got to Last Story and...

Read errors halfway through. Can't delete, my Wii just stops then a green bar appears across the middle and it reboots. If I try to reinstall it says it's already installed. Can't play it either, get the same green band freeze and reboot.

It's brand new, so not sure how it could have had a read error. Anyway it seems to be pretty messed up, any tips on how I can fix this?
 
Wow, I've been away from the scene for a while and just saw on the wiki that GCN games can now be installed. If I install all my GCN games on a hard drive, can I bring over the same functionality to Wii U? If not, is there a chance it will be done in the future?

Holy cow, Gamecube's games off the HDD are now possible?!
Is it region-free capable and always work over component (480i/p *and* 576i?) Also, if I later uninstall Dios Mios will my Wii regain the ability to use the GCN disc channel? 2 discs games which won't work on HDD can still be played off the discs via Dios Mios?
 
So very excited to try and play Gamecube games on my Wii HD now, but I'm running into some trouble. I followed the directions in the DIOS-MIOS guide (http://gwht.wikidot.com/dios-mios). I can get the games to install, cfg USB loader shows them (70MODr51), and I can try and launch them. But when I launch them the Will just shuts off :(

So two things:

A) I checked the guide again and it mentioned that it could be an HD issue. I confirmed that my HD was FAT32 and it was an Active Primary partition. Is there another possible cause? I made sure it was 32K cluster size. I installed the games to HD using cfgUSB, is there a different program I should use?

B) The guide mentions setting the DML version to DM in the system menu for cfgUSB. I've looked and looked, but I don't have this setting. I know it was updated to 70MODr51 successfully because I can use the GC games, and I have much more options than my old version (at least 2 years old, it's been a while)... but I simply don't see anywhere to set the "DML to DM"?

Always install to boot2 if you can, IOS otherwise. But always install BootMii.

I know this is a really late reply, but I have the HBC installed on my vWii on Wii U using smash stack and it went flawlwssly. I followed a tutorial I found over at GBATemp.

Yeah, I went ahead and used smashstack on mine, too. I'm not 100% certain I want to go through the trouble of installing CIOS to use USB loading, though. Who knows what Nintendo might do in a patch, and messing with CIOS in the state THAT system is in seems like bad stuff waiting to happen.
 
Yeah, Wii hacking on Wii U is something I'd steer clear of for the time being. I won't be doing any tutorials for it as I am certainly not willing to do it to my own Wii.

If somebody with responsibility wanted access to the Wiki for keeping it updated with Wii U developments, I can't see a problem with that. It was meant to be a team effort when I created it after all...

I'd be happy to do it. Using the game exploits shouldn't be a problem, to be honest. It's all the CIOS stuff I wouldn't want to mess with unless I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that it wouldn't harm my WiiU or get nuked by Nintendo in an update.
 
I'm a total noob to this scene, but I want to transfer all my VC content to my Wii U. Someone in another thread mentioned you could make a NAND backup of the Wii, transfer the data, and then restore that backup to the Wii, and it would be like nothing ever changed. Can someone tell me exactly how to do this? I've only got a Mac computer. Don't know if that complicates things.

Nintendo did not add a widescreen to Waverace 64. Your tv is stretching the 4:3 image.

There are instructions for backing up your NAND with BootMii on the BootMii page of the tutorial. Restoring it is just as simple.
