Being rooted in your culture is like a trunk being rooted to the ground: if you are rooted out of it, then you will suffer consequences related to the lost of identity.
It's crucial that humans finds a way to deal with other human beings despite the superficial and deep differences between them.
That is at the root of the human experience. To remove that is to remove a pillar of human beings that existed for millennia/centuries.
Like nations, cultures come and go throughout history. No nation, culture or traditions lasts forever.
However, uniting the world in one way or another doesn't mean that we just throw all current cultures and traditions away.
We have been condition recently to think that borders, nationality, culture are barriers to the "progress" of human beings, but that couldn't be more further from the truth.
I see. Well, I'm a conservative and I haven't been conditioned by the media etc. I have been thinking of this for a while from studying history, politics and philosophy. It's an idea that I thought more of as I tried to picture the future of humanity.
Nationality and religion are good examples of barriers that divide us, but we'll focus on nationality.
To touch on a thought I already made in this thread, currently humanity spends almost 2 trillion USD on defense. That is a lot of money to spend to defend ourselves against eachother. With a united Earth, that money and resources could be spent on scientific research, advancements in medicine (without shady pharmaceutical companies) and maybe a world wide health care system built like the NHS in the UK.
Also, now we're not spending untold amounts killing each other over fractions of land, or over who has the best God, we could combine all our knowledge and research, thus kick-starting a new Renaissance era.
Tell me, really, would the above be worse than what we have now? A world where children are blown to bits in pointless conflict, or a world where millions are starving due to increased poverty.
It is at least worth discussing.
