Game Boy Micro: New GBA Revision

seems like nintendo just wants to keep releasing GBA revisions untill it is the #1 sold of any platform so the can say "uh-uh you forgot about the GBA! Nintendo is actually in 1st place!"

I would have much rather seen Nintendo focusing on addons for the DS this E3 than on what is (to me) simply another useless GBA remake. Sure, they made it smaller and more portable, but does that alone make it a handheld worth purchasing when most people these days already own a GBA, SP or DS? I also highly doubt that it will be as affordable as most people are hoping for as well, considering that "smaller and sleeker" usually means "more expensive."

I'd think that practicality and functionality would come before looks, but most people in this thread don't seem to be as concerned about the screen size as I am (I have bad eyesight, so screen size is important to me). I'd also expect most of us to be fed up with so many remakes in so little time, but the responses in this thread indicate otherwise. I guess that just goes to show how much I know... :lol

Well, I certainly understand why someone who already has a GBA wouldn't buy one, but can you seriously see NO appeal at all to someone who doesn't yet have a GBA?

I seriously don't understand why people are so angry. I guess you might think it's a waste of resources when they could have been designing the next real Game Boy, but I doubt this took a significant amount of time and money.

I just don't understand. I should get pissed at Panasonic for making more than one model of CD player? What difference does it make?

every child will want one.
And half of them will lose theirs.

They really do need a NES model though. The shape is so close to a NES controller, it would work perfectly.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see a NES controller cover plate released in the US, after the NES SP did well.

I'm not angry, since I could really care less about what Nintendo does. However, I AM confused by why Nintendo would redesign the GBA yet again. I already posted my questions about their business strategy...and like usual, it was ignored. If the DS is supposed to be the way forward, then the move makes little sense since it will cut into DS sales. How many people on this forum recommended buying a DS simply to play GBA games on a better screen? If the search feature wasn't disabled for E3, I'd go drag up those threads for proof.

However, I have to question your contention that the GBA Micro is aimed at people who don't already own a GBA. I'm sorry, but that makes no sense to me. Do you really think there is some large segment of people who have been wanting a GBA, but haven't purchased one because anything larger than a cell phone is unacceptable? I'm sorry, but that sounds really, really dumb.

If Nintendo wanted to expand the market for the GBA, they should have either cut the price of the unit and the first-party games even further -- making it accessible to another segment who don't normally have much disposable income for luxuries -- or recommit to developing must-buy software which would drive hardware purchases. Spending money to redesign hardware and change the production line makes no sense for an ostensibly obsoleted system.

How many times can it be said? This is not made to attract typical gamers. There are millions of people that don't bring Gameboys around with them but carry cell phones, and Nintendo is going right for their throats with cell phone size and customization. I suppose we should attack Nokia for making multiple versions of their cell phones for the same reasons.

actually I've been having second thoughts about this, a 2" screen is really small, it'll be even worse for GB/GBC games, which I still play, since their image don't even take up the whole screen, I hope Nintendo revises the screen size otherwise I might have to pass on this

The important question is: does this include the link cable port? The propietary charging port (mentioned on IGN) makes me think otherwise, which means that this GBA is useless for multiplayer and Gamecube link! Nooo!

(if it does have a link port then I might buy one, for inconspicuous bulge in pocket whilst out and about ;))

The GBmicro probably will cost Nintendo very little and they'll probably sell it for a profit right off the bat.

This only strengthens the Game Boy name brand. As much as people hate Apple for it, with all the iPods released, they've all been massively successful. Pure case in point, iPod and iPod Mini.

Tier leveled structuring. Nintendo DS SP next E3.

There's a link port visible on top of the unit in one photo I've seen. I can't tell if it's a GBA-style or SP-style one.

If they're cheap enough a guy might be able to buy a couple in case friends want to come over for Four Swords or CC and don't have GBAs.

the port for charging is proprietary to the micro, there is however a dongle for link cables etc (no doubt $old $eperately)

I still don't understand the micro GBA. SP is tiny when you fold it in half. Plus you get a bigger screen. Whats the appeal of this over the SP?
This thing is a fraction of the size of one of the SP halves.

I'll stick with my SP and buy a DS for all the hot new games. When I am in the mood for some backlit GBA action I will play my games on the bigger DS screen.:/

i like the way the Start and select buttons light up blue. And maybe event he shoulder buttons.

This is like iPod mini...so many ways to play gba!

...because they need to make phone calls, but don't need to play videogames.

I'd even question the validity of that one. I mean - when I'm stuck behind some dumb bitch on a cell phone at a green light. . . at least with a handheld she'd have an excuse. "Tee hee! I was looking at the screen." :P

The more I look at this the more I'd like to buy it now.

Too bad Nintendo didn't learn _that_ trick from the iPod shuffle, eh?

They really can't increase the screen size without emulating the PSP's quarter inch screen clearance, though i wouldn't mind. It's too bad the power connector is on the top of the unit so it could charge in a cradle like the PSP.

Don't think this was posted, but another shot of the Micro, from Joystiq:

It's possible that the guys has giant hands, but it's even more possible that this thing is effin' tiny, to the point of simply being unusable for most of us here. You'd practically have to use the headphones as i can't imagine the built-in speaker being very loud, and it would be covered by your right thumb anyways. i'd also imagine it has the same noisy output as the SP. :(

Hmm, I seem to remember a world before cell phones where peoples' needs were still met. Obviously you're missing the huge image aspect to carrying around cell phones. It's more acceptible to carry something like that than a Gameboy... until now!

I think the screen is actually smaller than a GBA cartridge. Reading text on that screen is gonna be haaard.

I dont know, I thinks its too small, probably cant even read text on it. Might be cool for tetris maybe, or something.

This one has already been covered on IGN: the port on top is apparently new (and resembling some sort of cell phone plug) but the micro comes with a dongle to work with link cables (or a custom one...seemed a bit unclear there, but I'd stick with the first story).

the way the buttons are spaced, it does seem like it could be more comfortable to play than the SP.

It is small and sexy.

but the screen is very small. id like to try it out at least.

I played the GB Micro yesterday, and after having picked it up, I won't be buying one at launch. It is NOT comfortable. The size is actually a drawback, as my fingers were cramping up after only 1 minute of play. On the other hand, the SP is small but comfortable. I'll stick with that until the micro drops to something ridiculously cheap like $50 or less.

Yeah, I thought so. People with bigger hands or longer fingers will have problem with this thing.

It does look like a device made for kids. Their hands are the ones which will be comfortable with it. But I don't know why momma and daddy would buy them this after they bought them SP. Oh yeah the whining and crying for one. :P

Man, when I had this little dude in my hand the first day at E3 i was sold :lol

I kept goin' back just because I couldn't remember how tiny it was --- The screen was great, amazing compressed clarity (even more than DS) and text was completely readable (they had pokemon runnin').

GBA games just looked so damn nice smaller like that --- I donno.. the screen just worked perfectly --- I'm assuming it was the compressed resolution that is the exact same GBA resolution did the trick.
It was smaller, but like a small TV at the foot of your bed smaller ---

They need to drop the name though 'GameBoy Micro' doesn't fit if it doesn't play GB or GBC games --- 'Advance Micro' or something is a lot less missleading.
they'd better build some wireless into that -- but if not, I'm guessing it'll be rather cheap since it's only GBA and no wireless.

This is bullshit. I'll be glad when Sony takes over the reins of the handheld market from Nintendo...
That will never happen. Currently, Nintendo OWNZ 94% of the market.

Juz f'get about it. :lol

I asked one of the girls showing off the Micro and she said that it does not play GB/GBC games. don't know about the link cable.

wow! No Pokemon?! :)

serious hot. I hope Nintendo partners up with their top third party for game themed micros - I would pay about $250 for a MGS one.
