Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

A crytek game with shitty gameplay? you don't say!
It looks so bad from the very first showing, and all they've done since is replace the PRESS X prompt with a skull icon above the enemies' heads and improve the canned animations for finishing moves.

Wish 'aaa' devs would stop making games where all you do is unpause.

Of course, as are probably all the other 'big' cutscenes in which characters talk to each other etc.

So he straight up lied then?

After looking at the gt footage I can't see how people can still say it's the best looking next-gen launch game.

What the fuck Crytek?.. Can't even get the presentation right?
I thought this game didn't have pre-rendered cutscenes?

....whats the point?

Pre rendered cut scenes, I remember being called out for suggesting that after the direct feed footage was 1080p native.

Game Informer editor Dan Ryckert has shared his thoughts after spending a couple hours playing Xbox1 Launch Title Ryse: Son of Rome

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/r...-rome-is-as-fun-as-dialing-phone-numbers.aspx

Not surprised based on the E3 demo.

Doesn't sound good for MS and Crytek. Game Informer can be pretty forgiving by most standards.

Sacrifice to the Gods if old.

Somewhere in the back of mind I knew it was to good to be true going off the graphics and bam that somewhere thought was right :(

That's not too shocking. Crytek is primarily an engine developer, imo. They make beautiful games with horrible gameplay, that's why I don't understand the good Crysis reviews. This game is so generic and is losing its appeal when you play on low(er) graphic settings. Rice isn't an exception and it seems like players will be heavily disappointed when they play this highly anticipated video game... or there's a market for people who like to dial phone numbers all day. This November will be interesting.

Let's make this thread complete with all his impressions in short form:

Pretty much what I suspected. Dead Rising 3 and KI look awesome and they'd be definite buys if I were getting an X1. I'd feel the same way about Forza 5 if I liked realistic racing games, that series always seems to deliver. Ryse is a dud but I'd rent it just to blow a load at the insane visuals. MS has a good launch line-up overall, better than PS4's in my opinion. Sony looks like it'll have a better start to 2014 with Infamous in February.

Crysis 2 is great FPS, one of the best this generation in terms of gameplay and feeling.

Crysis 3 is a little worse, but still quite good, especially if You prefer stealth approach
You have to play them on Hard or Very Hard though, to really appreciate.

They have problems with encounters design though, thats a fact. This make their game good to great, instead of awesome.

I miss the awesome man.

Hopefully this game will have Platforming and more others things to do. if its solely combat then i am afraid it may be shitty game.
like i recently play enslaved. i found it fun game. but there was other stuff to do beside combat.

Platforming?.. I doubt it.

Whats surprising is that, generally, gaming publications won't call out a bad game until its review time. For all these people to just come right out that tells me that its really bad.

Yep. Previews are always more positive than negative.

Ouch but that is pretty much what we all expected after seeing it at E3. Nice looking game though. I'm sure some people will show it off just for the eye candy. I remember having a few Blu-Rays that were horrible movies but nice to look at.

I know but if combat is not deep and there is not platforming or some adventure aspects then whats left ?

This game has always looked to me like Arkham City if all you did in Arkham City was run from gang of thugs to gang of thugs beating up dudes. Even if the combat system is good that's some very limited gameplay.

Go watch the latest trailer, check out the latest screenshots, etc? Some aliasing on badly calibrated tvs doesn't really say much.
You mean the one that is at completely impossible to replicate angles with post-processing motion blur and antialiasing?

Gee I wonder why THAT looks good?

So he straight up lied then?
Ah well, it's probably done using game engine, but with settings beyond what the console could run realtime, kind of how those Gears TV commercials were made using Unreal Engine with everything dialed to 11.

You could say that he meant that the scene you see there will be a cutscene in the game, which is probably true though.

Enslaved is completely devoid of meaningful gameplay. I'd say it sounds like a good comparison.

I mean....duh, of course. When I saw the game being demoed at E3, I saw a game with a bunch of QTEs that wan't engaging at all. It was pretty no doubt, but just all around meh.

I feel like there's a misnomer going around that being able to repeat a combo sequence in gameplay (God-of-War style) is a QTE, rather than the actual QTE segments shared by both games.

Crysis 2 sucked. The nonsensical story killed it and the encounters were lame as hell.

Not only that but the PC version sucked so bad less graphics options because one of those crytek developers said on there forums with a picture from Crysis 1 Graphics Options "Who wants this?" And well the community said well we do? But it was all removed since they wanted not give pc players the options they needed and oh yeah no fucking FoV Slider. DX11 was a joke and tesselation was more laughable. MalDo though did a amazing job replacing all textures and making it very high quality but yeah not a good game at all.

Have you ever been in love? Did you ever call the gorgeous woman of your dreams on her Windows Phone 8? Then you already know the rush of each button press, each moment an exciting thrill bringing you closer to the connection you seek. Dialing has never been this immersive. Ryse embodies this incredible feeling of pure love and excitement. 10/10

Didn't Yerli also say that everything is in-engine to damage control the polygon count reduction? Another lie after the Full HD XP?

Well, I did make this in response to the Sessler interview, but that got closed. But it kinda fits here with the horrid gameplay talk.

Thanks for the idea Astronut325, where you are.
Shh.... no logic. Only "experiences" now.

Damn, this was one of two games that I was going to grab for the XBox One in the spring. Someone streamed some gameplay a few days ago, and I started to get worried from the constant QTE's. Now it looks like I'll have to find another exclusive game I really want to justify picking up an XBox One. Too bad, the setting looks gorgeous.

Ya I remember that and the ai was totally broken.

Nice post

What's really annoying is that so much energy was wasted arguing over this shitty game.

If it was a multiplat title, everyone would admit its a turd, and we'd all laugh at it together.

I don't know. For someone like myself that usually prefers singleplayer games Killzone, Resogun, and Knack are leagues ahead of Dead Rising and Forza.

Arkham games have many different stuff to do and have tons of gadgets to experiment with

Enslaved is completely devoid of meaningful gameplay. I'd say it sounds like a good comparison.

Yes but enslaved had a very nice balance of platforming and combat with set peices

MS gambled on Crytek, kept throwing good money after bad, and what we have now is probably the best possible outcome all things considered. It's probably a miraculous masterpiece compared to what could have been, and it's still a disaster.

I wonder how a Dynasty Warriors fan would react to Ryse?
Don't confuse DW's hack and slash with Ryse's shit combat. People knock the musou games for being repetitive, but mechanically they're solid with many different characters with their own fighting styles. There's also strategy, difficulty, and RPG elements.

In short, DW fans would look at Ryse with the same disgust as everyone else, maybe even moreso.
