Hey guys, how much of the books do the first 3 seasons cover? Is it all the first book still, or are they nearing the end of the books?

I want to start reading the books, but I'm hoping there's lots of content I can discover myself when reading the books.

Season 1 and 2 are book 1 and 2 respectively. There's some mixing (things happening earlier or later) but its mostly faithful.

Season 3 is roughly the first half of Book 3 while season 4 is the second half, but the lines have blurred.

Awe :(

Now I don't want to read it.

I'm trying to read something, anything, but I hate knowing what's going to happen. I should have held off on the TV show.

There are what, 3 books out now? How many more does the author plan on releasing?

Edit: Holy crap, 5 books with 2 more in the works? Hm, perhaps I'lll give it a go... but I dont want to stop watching the show. Decisions, decisions.

There is so much stuff in the books that's greviously edited or removed in the TV adaptation. GRRM actually wrote the books after he stopped working as a TV writer, because he was really tired of the limiting scale of TV-- so he wrote a book series with a million characters, centuries of history, massive battles, tons of sub-plots, and lots of other stuff that would be really hard to portray on TV. HBO has done a surprisingly good job with it, but there' plenty of difference-- note how book readers spend most of their time complaining about changes in the show.

Especially after you get through book one, things start diverging pretty significantly.

Why would you have to stop watching the show if you read the books? If you enjoy the show, give the books a chance.

You can probably skip the first one tbh. I've been reading it and 80% through there isn't much that the show hasn't covered.

I don't want to read the books because I was introduced through the show, and I don't want it to be like before where all I can notice are the glaring changes. Half the times, people in the Walking dead threads are upset that it's different from the comics or something etc.

Some people have said the great acting has changed the way they read the characters in the books.

So in all honesty, I'll probably watch the entirety of the show before starting the books. Since there is more content, maybe my reading will be skewed by how I remember the character from television.

There are some big changes towards the end. And of course the book provides some context about stuff that isn't dwelled on much in the show

I hope things start to pick up for Robb and the Starks though. Getting a little too depressing seeing just how bad things are for them already.

I agree with Jamie when he said last week, the North can't win this war. You have Winterfell burned, Bran and Rickon off with some randoms close to the Wall, Arya is being held by some guerilla group, Sansa is a captive at Kings Landing, she's probably going to get betrayed by Baelish or something. Catelyn was a moron who thought freeing Jamie would get her daughters back.

I mean when do the good guys get a break? They're getting screwed left and right. So many little things are adding up. Ned's bones that Baelish gave ton Catelyn, where are they? Where the heck is his Valyrian steel sword? Somehow Robb should try to get it back. Where is Arya's direwolf? How can they rebuild Winterfell? Tywin seems smart, why did he never see his kids were hoping up and that Joffrey and Tommen are Lannisters?

I tried the first book, but couldn't get past a couple of pages, because I knew what was going to happen. Maybe if I leave it a few years I could give them a read.

My favorite part was the opening scene with the funeral. The second I saw the guy with the bow I was thinking "man, wouldn't it be embarrassing if he misses?" and then he misses like 3 times in a row, lol

Y4ah, I was on location for that scene and it was pretty funny to watch it in person as well.

For anyone interested, I've put together a graph comparing each episodes' viewer ratings.

Pretty crazy when you see the popularity surge like this:

I watched the episode with a friend and he was thinking the same thing. I think it's done on purpose: you see Edmure looking at the fire (planting the idea that firing a bow is difficult and can result in failure in the audience's mind), and there's no music the whole time he's preparing. Contrast this with Bronn when he fires the flaming arrow at the wildfire and Blackfish when he takes over: there's music in both cases. It creates a mood and a tension that take the focus away from "will he succeed?" to "what happens once the arrow hits?"

Personally I like to imagine Edmure shooting with badass music in the background, just to make his failure all the more comical.

We are only three seasons in, but I already feel as if GoT had made a small tradition of blowing up our minds with killer 9th episodes followed by a cliffhanger in the finale(s).

Give the audiobooks a try. I found the first two books very, very dry and went with the audiobooks, and they're excellent. They're read entirely by Roy Dotrice, who was supposed to have played Grand Maester Pycelle in the series, but had health issues. They did get him in season 2 as the head Pyromancer in charge of the guild making all the wildfire.

The title for next episode is
And Now His Watch Is Ended
. I am trying to think who they are talking about.

Good suggestion. I've been looking to get into audiobooks.
