Still surprised at the dislike towards AFFC. I didn't mind it, but anything following ASOS is going to struggle I guess.

First time I read it (just after ASOS) I was also disappointed. However I just re-read it and for me it was much more enjoyable the second time.

Same here. Maybe ADWD would be the same, but I hated that book with such a fiery intensity that I'll never reread it.

Dont worry about it, alot of the negativity comes from having to wait 11 years for certain characters to get new chapters

ADWD spoilers:
I loved the Bran chapters, leading him to a (for me) horrible future, I also liked Theon chapters although hard to read sometimes and the Wall was interesting.
The whole Essos part was horrible :(

AFFC was good even on the first read at least for me,
loved the new characters and Cersei POVs, even the latter half of Brienne chapters are good.

EDIT: done!

You might want to spoiler tag those characters names. You don't want to imply that they are still alive in AFFC.

I'm thinking untagged spoilers for the Season 4 OT and I guess we'd do that as well for an Offseason thread. I'm out of town until late Monday night, so assuming that there is the demand from our book reader community to have an untagged offseason thread to discuss casting, filming, adaption choices and all that pre-season jazz, I can make and post one next week.
Sounds like a good plan, Steely.

Lawllllllllllllllllllllll, fellow poster on here that I knew was reading ASOS just messaged me on twitter because I asked him why he's stopped reading it.

'Robb/Catelyn/Arya dead :('

I'm about halfway through AFFC,
does anything interesting happen in this book?

Both AFFC and ADWD are setting up things.

And there is a line in each of those books than makes you want to read the next one and I'm sure they both will be on the show.

At the end of both books:
AFFC
Arianne Martell: “She narrowed her eyes. “What is our heart’s desire?”
Doran Martell: “Vengeance.” His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. “Justice.” Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, “Fire and blood.”
ADWD
Wyman Manderly: The North remembers, Lord Davos. The North remembers and the mummer's farce is almost done. My son is home.

Well, ADWD
The season 3 stuff happens in the books, but it's told through thinking back on it at a later point.

Typically an "Offseason OT" happens for shows because the Season OT reaches 20,000 posts. We are quite a ways from that. Now, with the nature of this show being an adaption, I can see the desire for an offseason thread.

I think that would be a great idea, I'd only suggest naming the thread "A Song of Ice and Fire TV discussion" or something like that to avoid people reading "Game of Thrones" and accidentally entering.

Completely agree, that way there's only one "Game of Thrones Season 4" thread.

But I strongly think that only discussion pertaining to the remainder of ASOS should be permitted un-spoiled. Since that is what the season will be about.

I'd like to talk about casting and such for the remainder of ASOS but I have only read up until that point.

You guys aren't making me excited to read ADWD. Not to mention the size of it

DwD has one of the best story lines in the whole series with
Theon
but it's other threads, unlike AFFC, end on complete cliffhangers with little satisfying climax or resolution. That's the main reason I prefer Feast to Dance.

I'd agree, Feast lacked some characters (though I think it was excellent to leave out
Tyrion
), but there were decent resolutions or cliffhangers for all parties, DWD just stops.

I'm almost caught up on S3. This show is so fucking sadistic in the most beautiful way and I've heard the books are even worse. I've been reading about some of the characters on the wiki about the book and OH MY GOD. I'm thinking I'm just going to read the books. I can't wait for them to make new episodes.

Thing is, they'll probably introduce some elements from AFFC next season, which of course people will want to discuss. And then of course there's (ADWD)
Theon, whose storyline will likely include elements from the book.

And the Season 5 thread would have to have all book spoilers unmarked anyway since it'll be a mix of AFFC and ADWD, so I think it's better to start now to get people used to the idea.

I finished ASOS last night oooooohhhhhhh shit

Too bad I'm over 10 years late to get a decent discussion in :(

Is AFFC as unsatisfying as I've been led to believe? There are a lot of questions coming out of the third book and I heard there aren't any
Tyrion
chapters which is kind of a kick in the dick. Aside from that, it's still a good read, right?

Yes, it is a big change of pace but it is a great book.

It's a good book, but it's a very different book compared to the first three. It's more slow paced and features a lot of new characters, which is why there's been some backlash against it (although I personally really enjoyed it).

And yes
about half the cast (including Tyrion) have no chapters in the book and appear in ADWD instead.

Feast and Dance are a single book split in two on the basis of geography. Characters in the South are in Feast while characters in the North and across the narrow sea are in Dance (with a few exceptions). So
Tyrion
has no chapters in Feast, but that's because all of his chapters are in Dance. There are lists giving trying to create a chapter order to merge the two books into one, if you don't think you can go a few hundred pages without seeing any
Tyrion
.

I'll definitely check it out but I thought I should temper my expectations a little bit. The whole book taking place in a single geographical region makes sense I guess.

No reason why people should read just AFFC these days. Look up a combined reading order for AFFC+ADWD and go to town.

And I'm in the for unmarked spoilers crowd. The no book crowd will never read the books if they haven't started to yet, everyone else should have no problem catching up before next season starts.

A year to read two books is plenty of time. Unmarked book spoilers in the next thread. Give it a vaguer name though . Asoiaf tv thread or something to avoid non bookies wandering in.

My issue was that someone on here said they were gonna start the new thread next week.

I agree a year is plenty if the thread is going to be started before next season.

I'm sure a lot of people, like me, just started reading the books at the end of this season.

The off-season thread would be next week. The S4 thread would be created a week before S4 starts next year.

There's still 50 pages till the offseason thread, still plenty of time imo. We're hardly going to be posting at a breakneck pace.

This thread won't be closed, but there is significant demand here for a thread that discusses adaption for all the books, especially now that we'll be looking at some adaption of the books beyond ASOS.

2 or 3. House Sigils all the way! Especially that Stannis sigil! Dayum!!

Hate the versions with faces on the cover.. ugh.

As much as I would love the Stannis cover, I would settle for the Lannister cover as well. I currently have the Stark cover for Season 1 and the Greyjoy cover for Season 2. ;)
