GameInformer is closing down

Well, this particular story (about GI folding) is about the print industry, not about the gaming industry. The print industry (newspapers, magazines, books) has been dying across the board for years, decades. I'm surprised Gi lasted as long as it did. Most other gaming magazines have long-since folded. But that's isn't about the gaming industry. It's about the print industry vs. the internet.

Very good point. You're right!

I don't think they had any discs. At least the couple hundred issues I have never had them.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong mag. I know I have a stack of PC disks in really slim clear cases (PC mag maybe?). I'll have to try and hunt them up now out of curiosity, not that I have an optical drive on hand at the moment.

Goodbye to Game Informer MinnMaxx has a video on YouTube (filmed in March) where Dan Ryckert, Ben Hanson and Leo Vader go to the new GI office and go through stuff moved there from the old office, including games from the vault, statues, promo items and other stuff given to them from Publishers. Pretty cool.

But wondering......in the video (from back in March) they are questioning what will happen to all of the stuff down the road (maybe they saw the writing on the wall). They say Matt Miller is fighting hard to allow the editors keep the vault and not hand it over to GI for auction, as they say editiors over the years has contributed to the vault and shouldn't automatically go to Gamestop. Geez!!! Can you imagine Gamestop selling all of the stuff on their crappy online store?

But where is this at now? Were they locked out of this office last week? Will they get to keep that stuff? Where is it at now?

Official Playstation Magazine, Official Dreamcast Magazine, Official Xbox Magazine, and PC Gamer all had demo discs

time marches on.

GI content was enjoyed in the moment and is in people's memories.

I actually tried to read GI not too long ago like in the past few years because I had it coming to my house by default. Magazines just don't deliver the same excitement they did back when magazines were your 'gaming internet.'

Sad but youtube really killed these videogame sites like 1UP. IGN should be on the chopping block soon. The whole industry changed, games changed there are fewer games to cover and so on. It's sad really sad, GameInformer had a pretty good staff at one point but they just didn't market themselves correctly I really had to go out of my way to find their content. Anyways so long space cowboys.

I used to work with the wife of head of Game Informer (shes a neurologist). I asked her once, jokingly, if I could play some of the advanced copies of games they got and she laughed at me. Bet she ain't laughing anymore.

Meh. Hasn't been… necessary, relevant, good in longer than I can remember. And the magazine was always far better than the people running GameStop. That is a shame. Time's they are a'changin!

Read them a lot because of free Gamestop subs in PS2 era. Didn't have many problems with their reviews. Fond memories of the mag from that era. Didn't read any others. Was long off it before PS360 info started coming out.

sad that everything is going digital , anyways I still tons of gamefans, gamepro, EGM , retro gamer magazines
they are always there for me when I take a big fat dump

For awhile they were my go-to gaming magazine in print. It sucks getting older and seeing the death of things we grew up on. I hope everyone there finds other worthwhile and satisfying work in the gaming media space.

GG, GI. You will be missed.

I remember flipping through the mags in the 90s and practically every game got a review of 7.75/10 or higher.

Back in the 90s, videogame companies had the prozines by the balls. If any publication gave any high-profile title less than a glowing review, the company would pull their ads. This actually happened to EGM after handing out 6/10 scores for Super Street Fighter 2 on Genesis & SNES, noting that three annual $70 fighting game semi-sequels was too much to ask for. Fortunately, the magazines did get better at offering real criticism (even if only in the "final" reviews, while everything else was hype), but by the turn of the century, the internet was thoroughly disrupting the business.

This is all probably inside baseball stuff, the kind of topic that only hardcore gamers ever cared about. The casual readers of videogame magazines only cared about two simple questions: "What new games are coming out?" and "Where are the cheat codes?" Again, the internet pretty much demolished the entire business model by offering those services immediately instead of after a three-month publication window. Oh, well.

A staple of my childhood/teenhood. Two gun salute for the good guys.

I wish when I got my first apartment that I didn't throw all the mags I had collected over the years away. But the memories are still in my heart.

So, uhh, I think everyone is missing the VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE that just came.

Short version: Game Informer closed LAST YEAR, and GameStop really fucked their staff over. But it looks like *SOMETHING* is in the works.

Really hope its real GI staff, with Matt Miller back at the helm. It really sounded like they had a lot of ideas to really keep up with the times, but were constantly hamstrung by GameStop. Would really be awesome to see the Game Informer name back at work.

I was more of EGM (for Domestic gaming stories), GameFan (for Import game stories) and Next Gen (more technical stuff) person.... Never really liked Game Pro and also Game Informer - but at least they lasted the longest.

R.I.P

Lots of memories with these gameinformer mags on the toilet during my elementary and junior school years.

RIP GI.
(sounds like a new Global Illumination tech)

Good luck to all the Former GameInformers.

Guys Game Informer (both magazine and website) has been gone since early to middle of last year. This thread is a necrobump/update.

"Will be missed". Lol, clearly not.

One of the coolest things about being a kid was having my mom or grandmother take me to the local 711 and treat me to a game magazine and a slurpee. Reading about various consoles I could only dream about having was so exciting. I would have never known about Neo Geo if it wasn't for magazines like EGM and Edge. Sad to see another gaming magazine ending its run, Game Informer was pretty cool.

Another item of my childhood/teenage years gone. Nintendo Power, EGM, and GI were my things. But yeah, hard to compete with online and amazed they lasted as long as they did.

Boutique magazines probably will be all that remain where a core audience can keep it afloat with high prices. Or magazines with low print runs and sold at premiums.
Gamefan and Next Generation really hurt when they stopped publishing!

All they need is to make a comeback announcement video where a purple haired staff member insults their audience as they clap like seals and they're good to go.
