How the fuck did Gamepro report this first? :lol :lol
I'm suddenly seeing the entire X360 launch lineup with 5.0 Gamepro scores across the board.....

Anyway, awesome news.

Lastly, and most importantly, came our backwards compatibility test. Our hopes were high as the 360 played the first game we threw at it: Halo 2. Hooray! All the speculation indeed turned out to be true and, performance wise, the game plays exactly the same, if not better than on the original Xbox, with no slowdown or hiccups. Interestingly, the textures seemed more crisp, perhaps due to the more advanced anti-aliasing. Of course, the console choked on every other first and third party game we threw at, with one exception, the original Halo.

It truely is the HaloBox!!!

Looks like MS is on time for once. Paper press should get the first kits this week, pro websites should get them within 2 weeks, and lesser people one day maybe...

So that means two of my Xbox games will work on this thing. If we can get the big guns, like Fable, MechAssault and Doom 3(+Res of Evil) then I'll buy a 360 rape pack this Fall.

Umm...... it's too bad that apparently Halo 1 and 2 were the only games they tested that worked.

Of course, the console choked on every other first and third party game we threw at, with one exception, the original Halo. Go figure. Apparently, game publishers and developers will provide patches to enable backwards compatibility for download in the near future.

Uh this doesn't sound good: "a massive AC adapter,"

:(

This sounds horrible: "Of course, the console choked on every other first and third party game we threw at, with one exception, the original Halo."

Apple iPod support and Halo 2 compatibility right out of the box...how can you not be happy with that?
They've gotta be joking.

RUH ROH.

I guess we'll find out better next week, but if they're seriously trying to put it back on the publishers... good luck with that.

I wonder what the PS3 backward compatibility will be like? Sony has been awfully quite about it and RSX doesn't even have any edram! PSOne emulation should be no problem but PS2 emulation -_- hmmm

They already said PS3 will play PSOne / PS2 games. What more needs to be said?

And who the hell cares if it has edram or not?

I agree. Sony has already said full BC, but it's not an easy task. Unless they plan on putting the EE/GS chip inside, which honestly, would be pretty cheap for them to do at this point. I do believe that they could do emulation, but with people coding to the metal of the PS2, there's a high likelihood of pitfalls there.

And they've been awfully quite about everything regarding PS3 details, so I don't know that you can read anything from that.

So "backwards compatible with the best-selling Xbox games" means Halo 1 & 2? :lol

Hey, technically Microsoft told the truth, those are their bestselling games!

Why are you guys surprised? It's already been told a few days ago that so far only Fable, Halo and Halo 2 are certified to be working with Xbox 360.
Maybe they'll be able to get some more games working in time for december, but at least it's proof that they can do it with 2 (I guess) VERY different code bases, Bungie on one side and BBB on the other.
Ellusions: Some people said the texture popups were fixed in another topic.

I think Allard put it the best

...Eurogamer: You don't expect Sony and Nintendo to do a worldwide launch, do you?

.......

I think Sony's talked a lot more than they've shown, and it's hard to line-up their claims versus Spring 06 and working out how they're going to get there. It's very ambitious. I still can't buy a 1080p television set in the US, let alone two of them to enjoy it! I don't have Gigabit Ethernet in my home, so I can't enjoy that, and they don't have vent holes on the side of their console yet so that air can flow through those very very powerful chips, so it still feels like they have a lot of work to do. They have nice movies though! Very nice movies!... [laughs]...

I don't really care if most Xbox 1 games don't work at first - what I really care about is MS actually being prompt with driver updates. Honestly, I wouldn't mind weekly downloads with whatever drivers their BC team finishes tweaking, even if it's only a couple titles. Please don't "forget" about the issue for six months, then finally release an update with a handful of titles.

I must not have followed it closely enough, to be honest, but damn, that's a pretty sad job.

Do you have a link to the earlier discussion.

I am curious how you know it's a "sad job"? Maybe it was, or maybe it was really difficult and impressive they could get it working. Really don't think we are at a point where we can comment on BC yet

Remember Bach's comments at E3?

"XBox 360 with be backwards compatible...."

*crowd cheers*

"....with top selling games."

*crowd goes eh?*

He should have just said, "Xbox 360 will be BC with Halo, Halo 2, and Fable at launch." I love me tree sitty but that is extremely pathetic. I say it borders on being completely deceiving too if only these 3 games make it at launch. MS is going to hope the BC question goes away. On the contrary, if they launch with only 3 games I hope people put even more pressure on them to not forget about it.

I hope tom clancy's game will work too, aren't they supposedly the most played xbox live game? beside halo and halo2.
I want to play lockdown and gr2 on 360...if anyone here got a debug 360, please test for me...thanks... :)
they are the only xbox games that I prob care to play when I move to next gen

Man they should just go all the way with BC or not at all.

Please.

Obviously until the system is shipped, we don't know exactly how many titles will have BC

That being said, if it's true...

They are claiming backwards compatability and according to the post BlimBlim linked to, there are likely to be ONLY 3 BC games at launch. That's a sad job, no matter how you couch it.

I had always gotten the impression that MS was secretly hoping they could get away with no BC for a long time, and when it became clear that wasn't feasible, began work on BC way too late.

So we're just seeing the result of BC being too much of an afterthought now; they probably could have had much more complete emulation if they'd started earlier (under this theory, if it is in any way accurate).

I have to wonder... just how much would it have really cost them to toss an nVidia chip into the 360 to deal with this mess? Per unit I mean. Is this one of those $2 widget deals or a lot more?
