Gamepro Has its Debug 360, Halo2 works..

Hope the author @gamepro.com doesn't get fired over this, but c'mon... he works at a pro site and seemed surprised that you can hook the iPod up to it to stream music? How many sites has that been reported on? He must be new. And now he has learned a very hard lesson. Don't break NDAs.

On the other hand, he has become my hero for, inadvertently, thumbing his nose up at the quid pro quo that's the backbone of the videogame industry. Publishers and PR companies so often get to dictate what writers can write about or when, and if you make them angry they'll stop sending around product or dev units... such power.

"Yeah, this is Microsoft, we're going to send you a 360 unit now... but you're not allowed to talk about the giant power brick or how it won't run any games except Halo and Halo 2. K, thx."

Man, fuck that. Seriously, it sounds like the X360 is going to be a drain on the power. I don't want to have to go flip a fucking breaker (which would cut off my entire comptuer run most likely) every day. Geezus, how can they make it so large. That's like 5 times the size of the revolution itself. Industrial thick power cable? I hope I'm overreacting. I really do have a lot of electrical devices in the room where I'd have the X360.

Exactly.

That's the major problem with gaming journalism, pretty much all the journalists are just company shills and they're really working for them rather than the readers.

it is fairly safe to say that yes, you are overreacting.

The PSTwo power supply is thicker than the system.
I know, but many things are thicker than PSTwo :) PS2 on the other hand had power supply in it, but I very much doubt that will hold true for PS3. There's probably no good reason to put it inside.

Heat is the biggest reason to move it outside of the machine. PS3 will be in the same boat.

... wow, didnt go into depth at all on that. how about the pop-in in the in game cinematics?
I've played enough Halo and Halo 2 not to care if it plays on 360 but I just wanted to congratulate you on a fine avatar.

Yup, I fully expect PS3's to be external as well. Hell, I want it to be. It makes me more confident that if the system does fail, there's less of a chance that the failure was due to overheating (NOT ENGOUH VENTS). Plus, if it fails, you can replace it easily. Imagine if those overheating PSTwo adapters were inside the system...

BUT, I also think Sony should really aim to keep the PS3 PSU under a metric ton.

Maybe that's your conspiracy theory, but I don't think that's what's going on here. I think it's that the debug units are not retail units and telling consumers that your debug doesn't play any XB1 games outside of Halo 1&2 (when that may or may not be the case) may be giving them false impressions of the final hardware. It's not like gp.com confirmed with Microsoft before going live with this info, and the writer further conjectured that MS would charge for b/c updates when it's clear he doesn't actually know. MS has said that they will not charge for *all* Marketplace content. I'd be shocked if they charged for backward-compatibility keys. Thus, this information is going to get people (i.e., this board) in a tizzy over what could be nothing come launch day.

I mean, Sony's initial PS2 debugs didn't play DVD movies or DVD-ROM betas. Should someone have gotten online and said, "Oh, my PS2 doesn't play movies or DVD-ROMs! Teh Sony lies!"

The guy wasn't supposed to post the news apparently.

Exactly.

Even with the external PSU, the PSTwo gets HOT. There's no way Sony will put the power supply inside the PS3.

shpankey

not an idiot
Having absurd power supply requirements for recent video cards is nothing new, and anyone who has been staying up to date with PC cards, for quite some time now, knows this. Anyone with half a clue could see this issue coming from a mile away for next-gen systems.

PS3 will have the exact same issue, and if Nintendo is going to use a state of the art ATI card, they will as well. Nobody will be immune. These graphics cards in the next-gen systems require enormous power sources, and that's not counting everything else (MB, HDD, etc.). If you can't handle this fact, you might as well count yourself out of all next-gen systems right now. There are no magic power supplies that can deliver the enormous power needed for any of these systems and remain at last generation's size.

Also, these new power supplies put off an incredible amount of heat, there will be absolutely NO WAY IN HELL any next-gen system will have it inside of the system itself. They would be too large and the heat they would put off in a closed system would be insane.

And even i am moderately surprised
... three games? wtf ?

I know i don't personally care about backwards compatability but that's shocking if that is the case.

I still think they should re-release Halo: Combat Evolved on the 360, with online multiplayer and online co-op.

There was a big push to make Bungie do that shortly after H2 was released (because the lame gameplay changes), but Bungie said that everyone that wanted that was a irritanting whiner and that H:CE will not come back :/

... why?

BC = 3 games?
wasn't this touted as one of the reasons to not get the Tard pack (because you needed the HDD for BC)?

well, i know Halo 2 is easily the most popular game, and Halo 1 still kicks ass. But... what about Outrun and all the other online games ?? Given that there are very few new Xbox releases if this is going to be the extent of the support (or , god forbid, pay for downloadable patches (kneejerk mode)) then that's not going to be very pleasant at all.

I guess we'll see how it finally turns out.

The debug unit isn't the final shipped product. I'd be surprised if that's all it shipped with at launch. And secondly, I wouldn't consider that the "extent of support" in any way shape or fashion. Those certainly aren't going to be the only games that'll work with it.

The 360 fits on top of the Xbox so nicely for a reason!

Firez, just. let. it. go.

Can you see the things in another POV?
Like he cares a lot about the game, so maybe that's the reason of his critics? anyway isn't only me. besides I'm anticipating it as much or even more than you.
anyway I promise that if Halo 3 is a bigger letdown or a redemption I will STFU in both cases

I already know your pov, but it doesn't make constantly bringing up the same tired subject any more valid. Though the same can be said about other posters regarding other games/subjects.*

And, no.. you won't. I can see the "this is what Halo 2 should have been!" posts already. ;)

*Jesus people let it go!

Ok this is a classic GAF thread in the making. I <3 GAF. :lol

I think someone else mentioned this already, but I wouldn't even call the machine bc if it only supports 3 games off the shelf.

How does it show that? It could simply be the connection to the cabled PSU.

Cause it would be really stupid to use a standard 220volt grounded connector there, if you must use a special outside PSU for it.
Think if you one day, tired takes a powercord.. a usual 3pin 220volt grounded connector and plugs it in there.

My synthesizers uses the exact same powercord.

and why its on the bottom is to bring some stability to it while its standing up i guess.

Because it's an AC plug (with a ground), so it's not meant to receive from a DC adaptor.
