Boop, back in again.

My gift card finally came through and the choices are pretty limited at Staples.

I'm just wondering about mobile CPUs, specifically the i7-720QM vs P940. Both machines have the ATI 5650, but the one with the P940 is $150 cheaper which is why I'm hesitating a bit.

Is that 150 dollars worth the jump to the i7?

i7 is faster, might have a bit less battery life though

played fine on my G73JW with some OC on GPU

i get 30-40 on either settings

1920 with advanced graphics or
1333x768 with hardcore graphics

The AMD CPUs are mediocre.

Their fastest mobile quad core is only as fast as Intel's basic Core i5 dual core. The i7 destroys it.

I'd take the i7.
 
You know what.... forget what I said. The 5650 is too weak to warrant spending $150 on a powerful CPU.
 
Yeah, I think so.

The 5650 will hit the wall before any CPU. But the i7 is still worth considering, if the games you play ask for a quad core in the system requirements.

The Dell blog said it will be sandy bridge, but no info on the GPU...



m11x had a big bezel. They need a better display. Preferably.. the dimensions of the machine would easily allow for 12'' display inside the chassis. with a good matte display, that would be awesome.

Personally I dont care about the Optimus. just get the most power, have heat under control and sustain 5-6 hours of battery and it will be a screamer.

USB3 would be nice too.



If this machine wont be good when they officially announce it(could it be april or may?) I think I will look to Sony Vaio SB.

It looks to be a very nice and powerful ultraportable. could serve as a gaming machine on the go!

I just think the situation in Japan has delayed production in many places:( Also I want to wait with buying it until the games I want for it have come out(Guild Wars 2, Skyrim, Battlefield 3...)

The GPU is the most major factor. It has to be equipped with GDDR5, or it will be below any Min Req. which asks for the 8800 GT.

Anything less than the GT 555M or 6570M will be a failure, in my eyes. But, still, it's realistic to expect the heavy armaments to be saved for the M14x.

I'm thinking of picking up the HP dv7t with the 6770 in a few weeks for when I go to South Korea. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge or experience with this line or similar line of hp lappies with i7s and dedicated gpus. My concern if for heat dissipation. A friend of mine has an Asus with an i7 and the thing turns into a furnace getting over 90 C. I hear this is considered normal for many i7s but that just seems a bit ridiculous. Anyone have any idea on the cooling on these machines?

Also, I was considering getting the 9cell battery for more juice on the go and it seems to prop the machine up a bit for more airflow to the vents on the bottom. Is it worth the extra 30 dollars?
 
So I went ahead and bit the bullet on that HP dv6t using that 30% off coupon so it was $822. I hope I got a good deal - I really haven't been keeping up with computer parts lately, especially in the laptop world. I'm basically just wondering at this point how it will compare to my desktop computer which, at this point, is pretty old (though I did upgrade the video card four months ago - just a cheap entry/mid level card I found on sale because my 8800GT was NOT cutting it anymore)

So how do these compare performance wise in video games? Should I expect similar performance, worse performance, or possibly better? Considering my PC runs at 1920x1080 and the laptop will be running at 1366x768 resolution. I really have absolutely no clue what to expect but I guess I'm just looking for reassurance that I will, in fact, be able to play modern games even if it means reducing the graphics.

why are you saying M14x mate?


Please don't. 14'' is to close to 15''. 13'' with a thin bezel has to be max. Otherwise it won't be portable!

a 720p screen is not so taxing.. If they don't go to 1440 maybe something lower than a 555m will be okay. Directx11 is a given.

And we know the new M11x refresh will indeed have higher clocked memory. in the current models everything gets scaled down to 800 MHz ram:/ but if Sandybridge is as energy effective as they say *crosses fingers* then we might be in for a power treat.
 
I think I will try and pick up a new laptop when I am in New York at the end of the month.

Man... I sure feel quite bad then.. But since the pc is only for my gf to put it at her house so I can play game on it while waiting for her to get dress and stuff. So I guess it is alright :(.. But it just sounds super tempting...

Forgive the muppetishness, but practically speaking what is the difference between the two models? How big a deal is having a quad core processor?

If i'm not in a hurry for a laptop, should i still just wait for sandy bridge? I'm kind of thinking about getting a sandy bridge laptop with integrated graphics over getting a netbook.

All depends on what kind of games you play, really.

But, relatively speaking, even the base Samdy Bridge dual core is on the level of or faster than a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo so min requirements won't catch you for a while yet.

That said, the Sandy Bridge 2630QM is faster than the i7-940XM, the previous gens most expensive and powerful mobile CPU.

The GTX 460M is not a bad card, by any means. It's significantly faster than a 9800 GT, which I see as the most important benchmark, going forward.

Plus:

1. My intel sauces could be incorrect

2. To have the 6970M, you'd need to order a P150HM, and the cost would be closer to $1600 than $1100.

It may not even be worth it, depending on what she plays. The GTX 460M will last at least two years, at some capacity. I mean, it's over 2 x the speed of a GT 540M or Mobility 5650.

Those GPU will bottleneck the Sandy Bridge builds hard. Don't even consider that for gaming unless you want quad-core for games like Starcraft 2. What is your price range ?

Well, that's pretty much what we should expect. More about the ports in the link. The GT 555M is about on par with a 9800 GT which is what you need to run The Witcher 2.
 
How does the 6770M compare to the 555M?

Also, are there going to be any Clevo/Sager models with the 6770? The 540M is too weak, and the 6970 is too expensive.

So one of the systems has a P960 with a 6550 and that's the same price as the i7-720 with a 5650. The cheaper one is a P940 with a 5650... and I have no idea what's good. Notebookcheck says the 6550 is an upgraded 5650?

Is the Quad core worth the difference? I really don't know shit.

If a game is asking for an Intel quad core, it will also be asking for much more than the 5650 is capable of bringing.

If my current notebook wasn't as powerful, I'd buy that.

The 6770M will destroy 1366x768.
 
Wops. I didn't see this thread so I posted on the PC one.

Here's my post over there:

I got my hands on some $1400 and I wanna buy a laptop to use for some light gaming and 3d modelling while I'm not at home. Ideally, I'd buy a MacBook Pro because the build quality seems quite good, and I definitely would love to try out the Mac OS, but for $1400 I can only get my hands on the 13" MBP so yeah.. screw it :P

I've checked out some of the Dell stuff and their XPS series seems quite good, but I've not read many reviews about them.

Also, I'm still not sure if I should go with a 15" or 17" screen. The 15" is better for portability reasons, but that seems about it. Playing and doing some light 3D modelling stuff on the 17" screen is quite more appealing, and I know I can find some backpacks that let you fit a 17" laptop and some extra stuff (like notebooks, one or two books, etc..).


Also, I'm in Japan so none of the deals over in the US apply to me. Btw, here's what the Dell laptop would look like if I bought it over Dell Japan:

I didn't translate most of the Japanese stuff because I think it's pretty easy to understand anyway. This PC would cost me 109,800 Yen. I can either improve the screen to a 1920x1080 resolution screen, or improve the RAM from 4GB to 6GB. I don't have the money for both.
 
i own that laptop and it's a beasty rig -- gorgeous build, but make sure you get the 1080p screen as the 900p one is total buttcakes. you can run most current at high settings at decent frame rates, but it's not exactly future proof -- you'll want a beefier gpu than the 555m for that. as a desktop replacement though for development work, it kicks. for games, it crushes the macbook pro with the 6750.

Uhm. I've checked the US Dell site and it lets me change the 555m, but on the Japanese one I have no options at all.

There's also this shop here in Japan called DosPara that has some quite awesome deals, but on their site the biggest thing I can find are 15" laptops, so I'll go to the store later.



Edit - Oh, and while I wanna play games, all I really wanna play on PC is Minecraft (for which I don't need all that much of a heavy laptop) and Diablo 3 whenever it comes out (and it doesn't seem to be very graphics-heavy either). I won't be playing all that much Crysis and stuff, though I will be working with the UDK (Unreal Engine) and CryEngine 3 (whenever it releases this summer for free) so I guess it counts as "games". But what I'd be doing most of the time would be light modelling and 2d stuff with Photoshop when I'm not at home.
 
The 555M and 6750M are very close to each other.

Man that shit doesn't even chart, on the desktop side. It's like 1/2 the speed of a 9800 GT. "Mid-range" mobile GPUs are freaking weak as hell.

The HP DV6 w/ 6770M for ~$800 is the best deal smoking. Post # 1427 and 1441 cover everything. There's just no reason to buy anything else in the price range.

The 6770M is > 9800 GT and the Sandy Bridge CPUs are desktop strength.

For a GPUs like the 5650M, GT 540M or 6650M, no.

But when you get to the 6770M's speed, it's definitely worth spending the extra.

The one on the 2nd column. The specs in English (notice I don't know the 'official' wording, so I'm just translating what it says literally) would be:

Intel Core i7 2620M (Dual Core/2.70GHz/TB 3.40GHz/L3cache 4MB/ HT Compatible)
15.6" Display ( 1366 ×768) / NVIDIA GeForce GT555M 2GB

8GB DDR3 SO-DIMM (PC3-10600/4GBx2/Dual Channel)

There are three thing that bother me though. One is the screen resolution and size. Second one is the fact that the keyboard is in Japanese, which means it has some extra keys around and it can be a bit annoying (specially when pressing space). The last thing is that it's from a brand I've never heard of (Prime Note Galleria GT-H... brand name being Prime?)
Other than that, they have the model in store, which means I could even go today and buy it (though I won't do it). I will try it out in a bit, though.


BTW, I don't know much about the technical aspect of computers so sorry for the newbie question, but.. do these laptops' cards usually support DX11?
 
Sorry for the bump. I wanna know if this kind of stuff (what I posted above) is standard or on the lower or higher tier. I'll go out and check some laptops on some stores near my house in about 30-40 minutes.

I'd ask the people working on the stores, but many times they are kinda biased depending on what they need to sell, clear out stock, etc...
