[GameRant.com] Fable Leak Suggests Disappointing News for Fans // Reportedly in danger of slipping into 2027

Not sure how reliable this Nick Baker is as a source, but sounds probable enough of a rumor

The fourth mainline installment in the Fable franchise was originally announced with a cinematic trailer at the July 2020 edition of the Xbox Games Showcase. The first trailer rendered in the game's ForzaTech engine debuted three years later. In June 2024, developer Playground Games committed to a 2025 release window for the open-world RPG. Come February 2025, this launch timeframe was pushed back to 2026.
Even this revised release window is not a sure thing, according to XboxEra co-founder Nick "Shpeshal Nick" Baker. During a July 19 episode of The XboxEra Podcast, Baker said that another Fable delay is on the cards, citing sources familiar with the game's development. "I've heard from two different people now that Fable may slip to 2027," he explained around the 1:38:59 mark.
"I've heard from two different people now that Fable may slip to 2027,"

Elaborating on this claim, Baker said that it's not meant to imply "doom, gloom, 'argh, there's something wrong with the game' [type of] problems." Instead, he framed the potential second delay as the unavoidable side effect of the somewhat unpredictable nature of complex software development. "[I am] just hearing that it's taking a bit longer than they expected," he explained.

Taking the new Fable rumor at face value, the characterization of a 2027 release as "taking a bit longer" suggests that Playground Games may have originally targeted a 2025 holiday season launch. That timing would align with what is traditionally the most lucrative period of the year for video game publishing. However, if a second delay does materialize, the likelihood of Fable being postponed by a full year solely to retain a holiday release window may diminish. The RPG was announced over six years ago, and fan impatience continues to grow.
Since the reboot was first unveiled ahead of the current console generation, Microsoft was still operating as a traditional gaming platform holder, primarily looking to leverage its first-party titles to boost the value proposition of its hardware. A lot has changed since then, with the tech giant responding to declining console sales by starting to embrace the role of a more traditional third-party publisher. This development raises the possibility of Fable 4 releasing on the PlayStation 5, either day one or eventually. Once the open-world RPG finally hits the market, Playground Games may return to its Forza Horizon series, which has been without a new mainline entry since 2021.

Around the 1:38:59 mark.

Never heard of this fella, does anyone have some knowledge of his track record?

Very disappointed if true. Fable and Blade are the only things Xbox had left in the oven that I was excited about.....just nothing but bad news out of MS lately.

Let me guess, another game with identity crisis?

Those girlboss games are so damn predictable.

This sure is walking into the cancelation territory.

After the news regarding Perfect Dark, I'm or the mind that this will almost definitely get cancelled. I've got a bad feeling about their other first party games suffering the same fate.

when was this announced exactly?
Article:
In early 2018, Eurogamer reported that Playground Games, renowned for their work on the Forza Horizon series, had initiated the development of the fourth installment in the Fable series. Later that same year, it was disclosed that Playground Games was actively recruiting for 177 positions dedicated to an open-world role-playing game. Forbes reported on a leaked video related to Fable by Playground Games ahead of E3 2019. In July 2020, the game was officially announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, and was touted as a "new beginning" for the series.

It's going to launch with their next console as a crossgen game at this point. They announced this game when trying to sell people a console in 2020 this gen before the console came out. They're absolutely terrible at delivering the things that they showed. I've never seen so many games shown but nowhere to be seen. Everwild, Fable, State of decay 3, and Perfect Dark. All used to build hype 5 years ago and all still not on the console they were shown for.

MS is really bad at getting games out the door as a publisher. Or they just show stuff WAY too early. But it's probably a little of both.

Even scoped down projects like Hellblade II - shown in 2019 and implied was basically going to be a launch window game for XSX didn't come out til 4 years later.

What a shit show. Another Xbox IP ruined this gen. It's like they can't help themselves at this point. Maybe Spencer is secretly a Sony Fan Boy that sleeps with a blue T-shirt and a PS logo on the back.

Unfortunately a lot of publishers show/announce the games too early. When hellbalde 2 was announced, apparently it wasn't even being actively developed.

Another example is wolverine, was announced in 2021 and there has been updated since( although insomniac gets a few points since they have released so many games this gen plus they had to deal with that hack).

If we look at recently we have witcher 4 and intergalactic, both announced without a release year and are both apparently not releasing in 2026.

This is kind of how it has been for MS for a long time. The only games they can consistently get out are ones that existed when they bought the studio.

The author said this is not a doom and gloom scenario but we just can't resist.

If true, Fable is probably half done or more. MS is right to give Playground a wide berth on this.

Urgh - expecting this to be cancelled now.

At this point Microsoft can announce absolutely anything and it would be difficult to believe it gets released or if it does, whether it's in a good state.

The confidence in their top management must be at an all time low.

lol they even used Fable Legends to build hype for Xbox One.

Maybe they'll keep with tradition and cancel this one, then announce a new Fable game w/teaser for the next Xbox.

No way same studio will be able to launch FH6 and Fable in same year.

Xbox should set realistic goals for its studios.

…Obsidian is launching three games in 2025.

Playground built a new team for Fable, and Playground are the ones driving the milestones and goals. The last FH game was in 2021!

I don't see the lack of realism here.

You fell for this?

fable

/fā′bəl/

noun

  1. A usually short narrative making an edifying or cautionary point and often employing as characters animals that speak and act like humans.
  2. A story about legendary persons and exploits.
  3. A falsehood; a lie.

AAA development is a nightmare. Even conservatives sequels takes years to come (4 years between GoW and Ragnarok or Remake and Rebirth; 5 between games like Tsushima and Yotei, DS and DS2, Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Eternal and Dark Ages...). And thats for big publishers: Warhorse took 7 years to published KCD2 after released KCD.

For the people talking about Obsidian, Obsidian is an AA studio. Not the same league even if you like their work.

FH6 should be on a different level of production compared to what Obsidian is doing. Provided it launches in similar state as FH5 and is not missing features.

Fable also is graphically looking like a expensive AAA production.

I think its impressive what Obsidian is doing as well, but they surely are handling games they seem comfortable with. I do like their output and am low key hyped for OW2 after Avowed.

Am not even sure how Fable plays, how quests work etc.

I'm guessing a big part of the problem here is them making this in ForzaTech. A large part of the work is probably going into updating the engine to serve this new purpose.

The sad thing is they're probably never going to be using this to make anything other than a racing game ever again, and Turn 10 - if they survive - is not going to make another non racing game.

i dont care when it comes out as long as it actually comes out, just dont understand people losing their shit over release dates.
Let em help you… I payed for game pass to play certain games that were promised or advertised to releases in a certain time frame. 1yr sub is $200+ and now games I've paid to get my hands on from this service keeps getting delayed or cancelled yet my money is not being fully refunded for waiting. If that makes cents?
