Games you liked but no one else seemed to

Every now and then there's a game that you give a chance and as it happens you really like it, maybe more than you expected to. But no one else does. It gets bad reviews and people ignore it because of it. You may find a few friends who enjoy the game but not many.

To me, the most recent Alone in the Dark is that game. I really enjoyed it and would have loved to see some story DLC for it. That's not going to happen, of course. Not only was the game hammered by reviewers. Not only did it sell poorly. The developer Pieces Interactive was shut down. Ouch. And still, here I am, finishing my second playthrough and wishing we could get more games like these. The kind of AA experiences that doesn't cost 300 million USD to make. The kind of games that does not blow our minds but still entertain us and do their own thing.

What's the most recent game you enjoyed but no one else seemed to like?

I've heard from several people that the new Alone in the Dark isn't that bad.

I liked Rage 2 and played through it about twice.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Most recent? Probably Dragon's Dogma 2.

Game fell short for me, but still had a ton of fun playing through it. Been seeing a lot of people saying it's shit so I guess it's one of those "love it or hate it" games.

Same with DOOM: Eternal, I love it. One of my favorite FPS, it's a thrill.

Heard the phrase "Dark Souls rip-off" a billion times.
As someone that never played Dark Souls, I can't tell you if I agree with them or not, but what I can say is that I loved this game.

One of those 7/10s that isn't doing anything super unique or deep, it's just too busy being a good fun game (For me).

Weird example, because the game certainly has its fans, but the amount of vitriolic hate I have heard about it, made me feel alone in fighting game communities. People always take a shoot at insulting it.

And I don't just like it for the same repeated to death reason that people ALWAYS bring up ("Atmosphere, Atmosphere, Atmosphere, Atmosphere")

I enjoy playing it, I think Heihachi's boss fight at the end is one of the best boss fights in fighting games (It's raw and simple), while the roster could be better, I'm perfectly happy with Violet, Combot, Yoshi, Miharu and Steve.

And it's my favorite Tekken. Is it the best one? Not by a long shot. But it is my favorite.

Probably Twin Mirror from Don't Nod; even did the plat for it and I only do that for games I really like/enjoy, especially if it involves multiple playthroughs.

Thief 2014. I was in the mood for a really good steal game but it didn't get good reviews and everyone was hating on it. Decided to get it anyways. Placed all the options to make it a pure stealth game in that if anyone even saw me it was game over (including boss fights). One of the best steal experiences I've ever had in a game no joke.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

My go-to game when I want something puzzling, but I don't have to think too hard about.

I guess I'm not the only one that likes these though, since there are like 17 sequels.

I agree with you on Tekken 4. The game really tried to emulate a certain feeling of being in a street brawl at random locations like a parking lot, shinjuku streets, mall, gym, airports, etc. including the fight spilling out into different parts of that location and different elevations as you’d sometimes see npcs in the background staring in disbelief or cheering you on. The new version of 3d movement enchanced this feeling.

Even the soundtrack matched the different tones that the game presented and you had a bit of everything, rock, grunge, drums, jazz, synth, piano, etc:

Not even its own player base liked it.....so they changed everything to appease "that crowd" and the game died. Pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies was one of my favorite games of all time.
This is actually my favorite time in an MMO ever. When they ruined it, it was hard to ever trust another MMO ever again. I ripped off so many people selling dice as lightsabers in the auction house!

I admit to enjoying Contra Rogue Corps despite it only running at 30fps. Most complain about the weapon overheating mechanic but swapping weapons performs an instant cooldown so it's just there to encourage you to swap. They do reuse levels and assets so it gets repetitive over time but lots of interesting upgrades and fun gameplay keeps me revisiting every now and then.

I guess Far Cry 6 was the last game that seemed to get a lot of negativity, but I really enjoyed. It’s the only FC game that I’ve completed. From what I remember, the traversal was fun, and the map seemed smaller than the typical FC game. I also enjoyed blowing shit up, and causing carnage.

The Evil Within (2014)

Unfortunately, the opening few chapters are a slog, and it turned off many people, but if you can overcome that and some of the jankiness, it's a rollercoaster of a game with tight gameplay, amazing enemy designs, a great variety of environments and a batshit insane story that actually does make sense if you pay attention. Better than TE2 imo.

When I read the thread title I immediately thought of Alone in the Dark.

But also...

I've been a staunch supporter of Cyberpunk 2077 since it's "disastrous" launch, where I seemingly played it without issue on XSX.

For a long time it seemed no one liked the game but me.

And also Castlevania Lords of Shadow is the best in the series. Fight me.

I really enjoyed Gears 4 and 5. Both immensely fun. Especially the Hivebusters DLC.

skater XL, everyone just wants to ply THPS style skate games (gross)

Re-doing that kick flip front nosegrind on a bench until you can film it at the perfect angle in the replay editor is highly addictive and satisfying.

I love this game as a freedom of expression Skate tool. One of my most played games on Steam. Steam Deck is great too.

The presentation of the game is very much flawless. The visuals, the music as you mentioned, the announcer.

For its time, and for today as well, I believe.

The artwork and concept art of the game as well, if you haven't checked before, please do. I don't know the name of the artist of the top of my head, but they are fantastic.

Anyway, Tekken 5 continued on that consistency of quality and diversity in the presentation, just with a completely different one.

Sunken City
Mass Effect 1 as the best in the series, downhill since
Atomic Heart
The Last Faith
Necromunda: Hired Gun
Dead Money DLC
Doom Eternal weapon swapping and F-16 behavior
RE6 has higher replay value than RE5. Maybe the best mechanics of the series. That melee shot combo feels great every time you do it. (which is a lot)
Deus Ex 2 is better than people say

Anthem.

Yeah the GaaS part was crap but the core gameplay & mechanics were fucking divine.

It was also gorgeous for the time.
