GameSpot: E3 Opens To The Public For The First Time Ever

Bit expensive. Especially once you include flights and hotel. I'd rather sit at home in my pants and watch livestreams.

Here comes the scalpers

Well, I'm fucked. As someone who covers E3 as press for video game websites, just playing one game can take over 3-4 hours without an appointment. Adding 15,000 more people to that just makes it that much worse.

Yup, I hate that I am salty about this because it is a positive thing letting people who have always wanted to go, but it's going to ruin my experience. I also like to get an Airbnb out there for E3, but that's gonna be impossible now. Maybe I will just drive out there for a day instead of the week.

Hopefully this doesn't ruin the parties! Will somebody please think about the parties!

As some have said, "E3 ruined"

I've gone twice (hooked up) and last year was sooo packed. I could barely check out two things for the day with the long lines.

What a weird coincidence that it would be the year that they gave a ton of passes to all the main booths to give out to fans. lol

This ain't gonna be pretty

If I lived within driving distance I would consider it, but even then I'm ok with just watching livestreams. Feel bad for press

The experience isn't worth getting packed in like a can of sardines. Plus E3 isn't the same as it used to be anymore. Hopefully folks enjoy it though!

Saw no mention of dedicated press day in the OP. Monday kinda, but with conferences being on Monday I'm not sure if that'll be enough. GLHF to any journalist trying to get work done tuesday through friday :lol

My best friend is in California for the military and he really wants to go to a big con before he gets out.

Should we try this or SDCC?

(I've been to Tampa Comic Con but nothing bigger than that btw, I know the drill though)

*side note, do we have any chance of getting into SDCC as just average joes?

Anybody know the age restrictions for E3? I'm 17 and would be able to go besides from that. EVen then I will be less than a month out from 18. Would suck if this prevents me.

I've seen kids there. I'm not sure if there is regulation to having parent/guardian attend as well.

Wow I can't imagine how shitty this is going to be for the media, which has already been stated in the thread multiple times of course.

Glad I got out of the grind, started hating E3 each year, couldn't imagine having to do it this year with that change.

Meanwhile in foodland, the Fancy Food Show folks are talking about requiring more proof of being in the industry.

Been going to E3 for a decade.

They check ID.

good luck getting in with the wrong name.

They'll take your badge and the person who's name on it is banned from the event.

Must be a random check. Having gone Twice myself they never ask for is. Closest security ever checked was to see the front side of my badge since it was on the back side.

If it's your first time and you can go, definitely go.

Lines are going to be terrible, you'll get the journalist complaining that they can't check out games to do previews on

Sounds like an easy skip this year. it's already at max clusterfuck levels, adding 15k general public people is what we have PAX for.

In 2014, they actually did check ID and it wasn't random. It was a slower process getting people into the doors to the floor, so may be why they didn't do it the past couple of years. Not to say they won't do it again this year, though.

Ugh, this is terrible. The best part of E3 was meeting up with other people in the industry and being able to talk and showoff each others titles, while also coordinating with others to find the vibe of the industry. It was already getting harder and too crowded, now this is just the death.

I still don't get why not just have the first 2 days be invite only and the last two days be open (with a purchased ticket).

I thought E3 was open to the public after the press event, guess i was wrong. Depends on how they pull it off, could be a success or not. Only time will tell, but adding 15,000 people to an already packed event could be a nightmare.

All I can say to this though is that I'm already hearing from friends and coworkers across the industry that they are skipping this year. So I'm guessing it'll be 15k industry people lighter and filled in with 15k public people.

Last time I went was in 2012:

Pretty much everything that was cool was behind doors(lines) or needed an appointment.
Hell even a pr lady wouldn't let me show my friend, my game. Had to call my producer to let him in.

I'm hoping that the companies that are still going to E3 stop doing these walled gardens/Booths.

I'm fine with having a public day or two for the event. But if the entire event is open to the public it just makes it entirely inefficient to get work done.

As it is, instead of having lots of kiosks to try out high-profile games, attendees are forced to line up into elaborate booths for developer demonstrations that can take hours. Add in the public and the lines will make it impossible just to check out or test a game for five minutes.

I got a press pass to E3 in 2014 and ended up not being able to go because I live in Scotland and flights to LA ain't cheap XD.

I've always wanted to go though. I'm excited for people who can manage to make it.

I used to dream about going to E3 when I was much younger, but nowadays it's like sports to me. I'd much rather watch it on tv within metres of my beer fridge and toilet. Still, wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to experience it. The press are really not going to like this though.

This is rad. Can't afford it, but I might actually get to go to an E3 someday.

I remember going to E For All back in 2007. Anyone remember that?

Would really want to go.... just to say I have been. I got family out that way, maybe I could stay with them and uber in. Hmm. Do you think it will be hard to get tickets?

That place is about to smell like a damn outhouse now. And downtown LA becomes even more unbearable

The age restriction is 17. The only underage people that go have famous parents.

I think the big publishers were going to bail out of E3 if this didn't happen, since they want to energize the fans and make their marketing dollars to go as far as possible. EA already left.

I also think that they're going to make it more difficult to get in for free, since they're introducing an affordable public option.

My Mom took me, my brothers and a friend to E3 2001 when I was in middle school. I grew up in L.A. so the Convention Center was not far away.

You can imagine my disappointment when they wouldn't let me in and told my Mom we had to be at least 18 years old with press credentials.

Disappointed we went around downtown L.A. where I tried a bacon wrapped hot dog for the first time so it wasn't all bad.

Usually if you go to each booth's media check-in desk and flash credentials, if they can't find an opening for you, they can at least push you to the front of the pleb lines as press. You also get the added benefit of seeing all those death glares from people that have sat in line for hours as you walk past them to do your job.

Man, I'm not looking forward to seeing how crowded it is this year. Unless they re-open Kentia Hall the crowds might be nearing unbearable at this point. I'd say the best plan would be for the first couple days to be industry only, then add one more day to the convention, and have the last two days be open to industry and ticket holding public.
