GameSpot: E3 Opens To The Public For The First Time Ever

E3 is exhausting. It's hard for me to go when I get in for free, I couldn't justify paying that.

All the walking around and waiting in lines to play brief snippets of games just isn't that fun.

I have a much better time sitting at my computer waiting for all the news, interviews and impressions to come in.

But for those who are really curious I say go for it and maybe you'll enjoy what I can't.

I thought E3 was open to the public after the press event, guess i was wrong. Depends on how they pull it off, could be a success or not. Only time will tell, but adding 15,000 people to an already packed event could be a nightmare.

That's a shame, I'd hate to see this just become another PAX

I hate what happened to PAX, I remember going in 08, I bought tickets at the door and had an absolutely amazing time. Longest I sat in a line was maybe an hour. The way PAX is now you have to run to whatever line you want to play and hope they don't close the damn line before you get there. It's ridiculous. They should cut down the number of tickets from 60k to 50k just to provide a better experience to the people that go.

For some reason I thought it had been opened to the public for a while now. They made it easy to get into years ago. Although I was never able to attend, I had a friend working as a developer in the early 2000's that got to go for a few years and he had some amazing stories. He basically told me that a lot of the hype around being at the event died when everything was covered online and most of the demos were released as a download at the same time. Due to the internet and leaks, E3 doesn't have the same hype around it.

How big is E3 bodies wise? If it has less then 85,000+ attendees, then I'm down to go. Go to Anime Expo ever year and that has nearly 100,000.

Wow, weren't attendees already complaining that it was getting too crowded and hard to work there? Now I am imagining Comic-Con levels of lines and smells.

The press E3 experience is going to backstage meeting rooms and skipping lines for scheduled appointments. This doesn't really have much of an impact.

Its just that most of the podcast I listen to have talked about this a few times over the years and they all dreaded this to happen...IGN,PSNation,Player one etc etc...

I'm going to Seattle 2 months after E3. I don't know if I'll be able to get across the country before then ;-;

I wouldn't act like a fanboy by picking up loot and gushing with enthusiasm at developers, don't worry.

Yeah I think my anxiety would kill me before I even tried playing a game XD

T_T Way too many people.

I like the idea of opening it up, but I question why couldn't they do two separate events, one week after another. Press week first, public second. Or something to that effect. If profit is a concern, start charging the press to attend.

At some point, too many bodies just makes it a pain in the ass to go and becomes something I'd rather avoid.

Going to try to get tickets. Been wanting to goto E3 since I was a child. I've been to Comic con and PSX and feel like this won't be much different interns of crowds.

Every year I go it feels like it's open to the public. Massively overcrowded and tons of kids/teens. It's also suppose to be an 18 years old+ event which apparently means nothing.

Nooooooooo

No

No

Those enterprising enough could always get in

Now it's just gonna be comic con 2.

They better limit the badges so there's not shitloads more people.

Ugh this is the worst news ever.

Hopefully the public has their own days so the event isn't straight up ruined :(

I have dreamed about attending this event since I started reading Gamepro magazines about it back in 92. I will be attending in 2018 without question.

I've been going for for 10 years. Seriously considering not going now because it will be worse. Its bad enough closed doors, but letting in the public will be a dreadful nightmare.

I will be fully taking advantage of this. Largely in part I am local and don't need to worry about hotels or flights or anything. Plus, I will just take vacation days. Waiting in lines or not, I think the experience will be one to remember.

It's $150 for the first 1000 tickets sold then $250 after that.

Sounds like a great reason to stop going to E3.

*shrug*

E3 has been a real shadow of its former glory days anyway, so not a big loss. 2006 was the last good year for the expo floor.

Also just FYI for those interested. The years of open booths you can walk up to and play games are going away. For several years now, more and more booths are basically large closed off sections for private invite showings and events only. As in, there is nothing for you to see or interact with. Just employees asking if you're on a list or not. Smaller devs have kiosks to play games and EA and few others do too. For sure there are lot of games to play, but my point is about 1/3 of teh show is invite only, closed door stuff now.

It is incrediblely common now for publisher's entire booths to be walled off. Also, the "good games" you probably want to play are anywhere to 2-4 hour waits. So just check your expectations at the door and then factor in letting in thousands more people and ya.. nightmare city.

This would be the fulfillment of a childhood dream for me, but the pics of the giant crowds in the thread kill the thought. Though honestly, I'm more interested in niche games that would have smaller crowds. But yeah, I'd probably still go nuts in those crowds...

$3,000,000+ will be made from this and I can pretty much guarantee there won't be more show floor, or more to do at all.

The lines were already dreadfully long with 50,000 people.

Now it's going to be 65,000 people?

This really sucks. Worst news ever. #E4ALL was a failure, so I don't know why they think this would be any different.

Pure greed.

The current format isn't exactly the most lucrative one, so I can't really blame the ESA for trying out new ways to make money... But it sucks for journalists and other industry people who need to be there.

My hope for gamescom has always been to just make it a public cosplay eSports event, all of those things, while having a separate event in another town for the industry. I find the public tickets on press days quite unnerving to be honest. I've never been to E3 but this to me just sounds like they need money and they know their importance is fading so might as well get money out of people who have no idea how bad those industry events are.

I always preferred going to E3 over Gamescom because it's not open to the public (press got only one day at GC and the other days are crowded), but I think it will change this year, this is going to be a mess and very hard to get good footage if 15000 non-press come over :/

E3 is dead.
