we believe that the Xbox 360 will be the exclusive platform for new Sonic, with sources close to Sega outlining that much of the focus of the new game has been on the Microsoft console version. It is almost certain that this version will be on show at next week’s Tokyo Game Show, though reports of a video-only presentation have yet to be verified, with behind-closed-doors hands-on access deemed likely.

So finally the speculation can come to a rest. Though thinking about it, it was pretty much certain that Sega would use the Japanese show as a public debut. Remember, it was on show, being played in real-time by a human back in May. Expect a spring 2006 Xbox 360 date to be announced.

The real news:

First up was the announcement that yes indeed, there is a next-generation Sonic game in the works. Billed as a "re-invention" of the classic franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog will make its debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during 2006.

Presiding over the game's development will be none other than Yuji Naka, who, along with character designer Naoto Ohshima, created the original Sonic game for the Sega Genesis in 1991. According to Sega, Naka will "create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in videogames" with "an innovative combination of art, physics and game design."

"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."

Hardly surprising since the game was shown, pseudo-playable, at E3. I expect it to be one of the first games announced for Revolution, too.

For once, I wasn't being sarcastic. I'm a big Sonic fan. I even enjoyed his crappy 3D games (though the Sonic/Shadow levels were good in the SAs... the rest were rubbish).

Of course, we never have seen any distinguishing characteristics on animal characters in video games such as Sonic, Yoshi, Birdo, et. al. Not that we should. That would be rather disturbing.

hey: mario golf is actually good. don't lump it in with the awful party, kart, sports, platform, mini, and role playing games he's been in lately. mario is at home on the links, and if i had my way he'd never leave them.

i don't know that sonic riders will suck, but a bunch of awful sonic characters i never want to see again riding hoverboards is hardly a promising setup. i suppose it won't be the first board sonic's ridden, but i consider his boarding exploits an unfortunate residue of his time as an early 90s fad, and i wish he'd stop.
