Gamestop say they're hearing Xbox 2 will have some form of backwards compatibility

Mentioned on the just finished conference call.

Both the analyst who queried and Gamestop who answered also expected Microsoft to stop supporting Xbox 1 as soon as Xbox 2 is released.

Gamestop's hardware sales 40% down on last year. Yet their marketshare for hardware sales was at an all time high in November (6.5%) and they expected to main the share in December.

For the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas they only sold 82 PS2s and 104 Xboxes in their 1700+ stores. Quite a shortage!

edit: verbatim of comments

Tony Gikas (Piper Jaffray): On the Xbox is it possible we could see continued shortages of the Xbox platform as the year progresses? We're hearing that Microsoft may not support the Xbox 1 post launch of Xbox 2 or do you think that we'll actually get a ramp in the manufacturing of the Xbox 1 in the coming months?

Daniel DeMatteo (COO of Gamestop): I don't have any data to guide us in this regard, clearly, we hear somewhat the same thing you did as far as post launch of Xbox 2 will they support Xbox 1. We believe Xbox 2 will have some backward compatibility. Which means that the Xbox 1 software will still be relevant.

They have been somewhat reluctant, it seems like, to ramp up manufacturing to take up slack that was there with the PS2. One can conclude they could continue to do that.

"Some form" of backwards compatability?
I always saw BC as more of a "do or do not" type of thing. What's he mean by this?

Eh...my friend who works at Gamestop "hears" stuff all the time from his manager/store reps that's often proven wrong on this forum the same day. This also runs contradictory to what MS execs themselves have been hinting at.

Could mean no bkwds compatibility for LIVE. Could mean they'll sell an extra add on which enables bkwds compatibility. Could mean something else...

Gamestop is not known for being a bastion of knowledge when it comes to rumors like this one. It would be nice, but I'll believe it when i see it.

Gamestop once sent an email to all stores saying Final Fantasy X2 would require the HDD
I refused to spread such misinformation, yet the other morons at the store told customers this until it was corrected later.
