Gaming Journalism |OT| May contain trace amounts of games. Or journalism.

I was thinking about this recently whilst replaying OG Doom and Doom II. These games can be hard and I couldn’t help thinking that there is no way a modern games writer would ever play a game like this nowadays.

I keep hearing more and more of them (even ones in their forties that grew up on hard games) bragging about playing games on easy mode because “I don’t have time to play hard games”. Like they revel in being pathetic. It’s the biggest cop out excuse ever.

To be honest I think they do it deliberately to annoy people. Then they get a few edgy replies to their dumb tweets. Then they work that into the "gamers are toxic" narrative.

They seem to just absolutely hate people who are good at videogames.
Even that idea gets mocked as if you are some knuckle-dragger for wanting a game to offer a challenge and being happy with yourself when completing that challenge.

Fair enough, being able to complete Dark Souls shouldn't be one of the major achievements in a persons life.
In the context of a hobby though? I think it's fine.
Certainly you could take as much pride in the completion of a difficult game as someone might take in writing a really good essay about the story in a game.

If you think of people who are music, movie, wine or food "snobs" usually their big thing is about how much you know about the subject matter, how much experience you have and how you can stitch those together into an essay or speech or point of view that your peers will respect.

So if we tried to describe someone who is "good at watching movies" what we'd be talking about is someone who can watch a 2 hour film and come up with an educated and measured and well delivered opinion or analysis of the movie.

This is trickier with games as there are multiple ways to be "good" at gaming.
Some smarmy college educated journalist can talk and talk all day about games and try to sound as smart as possible.
Then some snotty little brat can come along and say "haha I completed Dark Souls in 50 minutes using one hand".

There seems to be an attack on that type of gamer under the guise of "gatekeeping".
Outright wanting a From Software game to be difficult and with no difficulty options is a big no-no.
I always use the example of a poster on here who said, regarding Sekiro, that "my girlfriend just wants to experience the world and the story".
It's hilarious but it's also a good marker of where certain parts of the community and the media are at.

I wonder if they are just jealous of movie critics? A movie critic can just sit down and watch the 2 to 3 hour movie and then write up a good review based on their experience etc. Probably even has time to watch the movie twice to really get into the critique.
A lot of games are asking for 12 to 40 to 80 hours and even then there will be some "toxic, male, alt-right, racist, sexist, incel, gamergater" somewhere who did not even notice the games political themes but who has still mastered the games systems and mechanics better than any journo.

So this is how they react to that.

not sure what to even say at this point. we have reached the Entitled Singularity.

what I am wondering now... given how un-fucking-believably easy games are nowadays... how crazily easy does the FFVII easy mode have to be in order to promt news articles about it? because... like... playing most games nowadays on Normal is like playing a PS2 game on Kids-Mode

This article is from the chief editor. Let that sink in. Chief Editor. And it begins with:

It is with regret that we must inform you that the idiot gamers are at it again.

And ends with:

It’s almost as if there’s an underlying theme of misogyny where the only time women can be in a game is if it’s under terms specified by a subhuman set of men.

Hmmmmmm

Who the fuck wrote that, that is embarassing as fuck. It's like someone thought hey, parody is a fine idea, then did it worse than the fucking Simpsons. Right there, is why everyone looks at gamnig journalism as a joke. Of course it's 'satire' though.........‘Satire that is polemic can turn ugly and authoritarian’ :pie_thinking: :pie_thinking:

can modern games journalism die already? People actually get paid to write such juvenile presumptive bullshit
It really is something. I have never seen a media group so at ends with their potential reader base. It's like game journos can't stand video games and gamers, and gamers absolutely despise game journos. So how is it still a thing? Who's clicking on these sites enough to keep these places afloat? I haven't visited an e-rag like Kotaku or Polygon in years, who's still going there?

I can't think of any other hobbyist writing (and that is what game journalism is - it's not really journalism) where the writers are so openly hostile to the people who they are writing for, and the subjects they are writing about. Of course it's been that way for years but it continues to surprise me.

Like imagine if Guns & Ammo was written by a bunch of Brooklyn hipsters who write columns every month about how the 2nd Amendment needs to be repealed and everyone who likes to shoot guns is compensating for their manhood. That's videogame journalism in a nutshell.

Haha. I love this.

I can't help but laugh at the levels of desperation and insecurity on display here.
Like this game is somehow so good it rivals the best literature and cinema and don't you dare say it doesn't.

They are so desperate to validate their hobby that they go to these lengths to distance themselves from people who just enjoy the entertainment of videogames.

They, and the people they are writing this article for, are so pathetic that they can't even use the word "virgin" because that describes a chunk of their own audience and they'll cry if they get shamed. So instead they have to use another word that basically means "no, not us virgins, those other far right virgins over there".

Fuckin hilarious.

They are so fundamentally rocked by the idea that the plebs won't play ball and praise the newest "thoughtful" game over a bit of cheese and wine with some fellow videogame aficionados that they have to build this massive "gamer" strawman and then bring it down. Presumably to the cheers of their fellow fart huffing "videogame critics".

I think to some extent we've all been there.
You have a movie or album that just completely changed your world and made you think "this is the greatest masterpiece ever created".
Then you recommend it to everyone and anyone who will listen and a few people say "meh, I hated it, it was boring".
Then you lose your mind. Reeeeeeeee! What do these gutter trash idiots know about anything!?
I know because I even caught myself doing it with Death Stranding.

You need to learn to deal with that shit though.
This article is a great example of exactly how not to deal with it.
Throwing a little hissy fit because people don't like your new favorite game.

Being careful not to call people virgins though because your army of virgin fans will get upset.
It's incels. Incels hate this game.

At this point, I can't find insults for game journos that aren't somehow tamer than what they're actually doing.

Like, "shove it up your ass journo" and they're like "well I do have an article due this week".

What if I don't consent to being killed in a game, are people not allowed to kill me?
Consent isn't a thing in games unless it's actually part of the mechanics.

In Mount and Blade for example on duel servers you have to initiate duels by pressing '' F '' and they have to accept it, that's consent.
But in Mordhau it's just FFA and you do a flourish to initiate and consent but anyone can still attack you consent or not.
I mean I prefer how Mount and Blade does it, but it's still just how it is in Mordhau it's just a game...
You're not actually being violated for real.

Fall Guys is just a big clusterfuck there's no real consent mechanically in the game for anything.

So Jason Schreier is claiming he takes no swag.

So out of the decade or two of covering games, he's claiming he's never taken gifts, freebies, free preview/gold copies (instead of Kotaku buying it for $60 on launch day), and his desk at the office (or at home) has zero free swag.

What a bullshitter.

lol Jason Schreier is such a fucking phoney. image trying to virtue signalling while you work for Bloomberg. he is just like all the other fake socialists.

wow you discovered that crunch still exists in an industry that has always had it. wow what an invaluable thing. certainly no other journalists could have ever discoverd this. HERE IS YOUR COOKIE GO SELL SOME MORE TOYS YOU FRAUD

Makes me long for the golden era of Gamefan!
Your nostalgia might be getting in the way a little bit there. Those magazines were 90% advertisements (EGM was even worse). They were just as corrupt and dodgy as the woke lunatics running the show today. Though at least Gamefan actually played the games they reviewed, EGM often didn't.

Lol that is true. At some point they turned into a sears catalog with all the ads and less and less content.

But thats the thing, nostalgia is the shit because you get to read those mags from back then now and you get all giddy with memories.

Got a source for this? I was a regular reader of EGM back in the day and this the first time I've heard of it.

So, we've eventualyl come full cycle to Cyberpunk now being compared to Nazi's officially. Took a bit longer that I would have liked. Bonus points to CDPR guy for telling them to

What a disgusting comparison, especially since CDProjektRed is based in Poland. You know? The country that the Nazi's invaded to kickoff the Second World War.

Corporations good, players bad. Discuss.
Oh give me a break! I can already imagine those poor hurt, sad little chipmunks that keep on running in a cage, trying to make us all smile! :(

Game developers spend their days working on computers in buildings with air conditioner, food, gyms while being paid not only more than enough money but bonuses!... the list can go on. How about spend some time talking about people on heavy jobs which hurt their health? How about cops, military, industry, et cetera??

Jason Screier is a joke and a product of the American entitlement.

The one-size-fits-all Schreier-is-garbage-human response to anything.
They always exaggerate it to make it look like journalists aren't in cahoots with each other. Same thing with being paid for reviews. Nobody is giving anyone bags of money on secret meetings. Look at AngryJoeShow, Sony didn't even give him a copy for the review. If you made such a good game, why be afraid and ignore one of the largest Youtubers? They knew he's not going to like it and they purposefully made the situation difficult for him. People look up reviews primarily before (!) the release date, nobody wants to wait a month or even a week to read the review.
You don't need to give someone bags of money to persuede them to write a review. If you are a reviewer and Sony stops giving you free copies of their games to review - that's already a massive blow, especially for smaller reviewers.

I refuse to believe Schreier and the other "progressive" journos don't meet with each other. It's not "secret meeting of Stalin and Hitler" but I'm sure it happens. So, not only is he a hack but a liar. I also refuse to believe he doesn't bribe people and doesn't reward his "little spies" (like he said himself).

Reminds me of that old man from Game of Thrones and his "little spies".
