Gaming Journalism |OT| May contain trace amounts of games. Or journalism.

As someone that has just begun writing about games for money (call that profession what you will), I get hate messages constantly. I'm not complaining, because I understand where many commenters are coming from. In my opinion, I wish soft news media members, content producers and content consumers could all just get along. Oh well... Maybe in another world....
Respect your readers and everything else will follow.

Gamers love videogame news and insight and gossip. That's why we're here on GAF.

When the ideologues pissing down from their ivory tower, it angers gamers. When the same ideologues grin and insult the gamers for not appreciating the golden shower, it angers them more.

For starters: Twitter was made exponentially worse by those blue fucking checkmarks. No way should any “video game journalist” have a need to be “verified”.

Twitter also became worse when it was co-opted by “video game journalists” to be used as grounds for moral pissing contests to be waged publicly. These jerkasses use Twitter as an attack vehicle, targeting other “journalists” or other people who dare not agree with their points of view... and, because most of these jackwagons have that blue checkmark, it’s erroneously thought by users to establish these clowns as experts in their field.

Both of these “journalists” fucked up. These interviews aren’t about the interviewers— or, at least, they’re not supposed to be.

This Kirk asshole should get blacklisted. So your expected interviewee fell asleep before your interview time. This isn’t his fucking time zone! Maybe he was jet lagged. Or sick. Or exhausted. Using your platform to make the guy out to be the problem— instead of the real problem (the interviewer)— is immature at best and bush league at worst. SEGA should blacklist Kirk and the outlet he represents.

The NicheGamer interviewer should’ve left out the fanperson stuff at the end. Interviews aren’t for your enthusiasm; your job is to ask pertinent/relevant questions and scribe the answers. Maintain some level of neutrality.

But, hey: it’s common knowledge that “gaming journalism” is and will continue to be a big, unfunny joke. These people write more about themselves and their thoughts/wants/agendas than about what they’re supposed to cover in the first place: the video games.

What would solve "gaming journalism" is if:

A. Every gaming writer stop calling themselves or thinking they are a journalist
B. Gamers stop equating every game site editor as a journalist

Do any of you consider an anchor desk person reading a teleprompter a journalist? Not me.

Do any of you consider a game site writer who can do any of the following a journalist? Not me.

1. Writes suck up "NDA guideline preview articles" in return for early material or free swag. And even given enough latitude to partially criticize an early copy, will say something like..... "but I'm sure it'll be fixed by release" which is clearly a claim of unknown final results

2. Writes terrible reviews that usually skewed that stupid "6-10 rating scale" so they don't get fired or get the dev cancelling ad revenue (Jeff Gertsmann/UBI debacle). I don't know exactly when that scale came but somewhere in the early-mid 2000s. What a coincidence... right when the internet really picked up steam

3. Asks softball questions like...... "Hey dev, do you think this game will look and be better than last year's game?"

4. Does previews and review articles clearly without even finishing most of the game

5. Jumps into games and complaining about certain things like control, difficulty or other settings without actually going to options/settings to see if there are sliders or controller layouts to adjust how he or she wants it

You guys get the drill.

Now if there were more in depth articles like Schreir's Anthem bugfest development post, "gaming journalism" would be more respected.

We should start our own website, and pick up the slack. Try to bring games journalism back to the days of EGM, and make it fun again without falling into the trappings that comes with being overly negative.

I know it's easier said than done, but I would totally be up for it.

Clifford Irving: I've known Elmyr for about eight years. We met when I was broke. When I was writing fiction. I wasn't selling it very well.
Orson Welles: His fiction didn't sell. Elmyr's biographer's a highly gifted writer. Does it say something for this age of ours that he could only make it big by fakery?
Elmyr de Hory: Le grande surprise!
Orson Welles: Cliff Irving's caper may well be the hoax of the century, but, really, this is not, you know, in any way the century of the hoax. We hanky-panky men have always been with you.
Elmyr de Hory: That's a fact.
Orson Welles: What's new?
Clifford Irving: The experts.
Elmyr de Hory: The so-called experts...
Orson Welles: Experts are the new oracles.
Elmyr de Hory: - are greatly pretentious...
Orson Welles: They speak to us with the absolute authority of the computer.
Elmyr de Hory: - pretend to know something what they only know very superficially.
Orson Welles: And we bow down before them. They're God's own gift to the faker.
Clifford Irving: All the world loves to see the experts and the establishment made a fool of.

Exclusively Games has been pretty good so far.

Barely visit it if ever since I am mainly here, but it does keep the political activism out of it.

The VG24/7 guy is now making fun of the NicheGamer guy’s appearance, and implying that he lives in his mother’s basement.

All because NicheGamer decided to openly show their respect for the Yakuza dev.

This is how low VG24/7’s standards are, that they’re willing to employ this guy. Games journalism is trash.

When that dude catches hands from someone, he will decree himself a victim.

He is picking petty fights with so many across the gaming world.

That is how irrelevant they have become, and they know it.

Gaming journalists, shouting into the void for decades now. The only ones that can hear their cries are fellow game journalists. They call to each other, soothing calls of support "You're right, gamers are pigs..." "Women in games should never show skin..." "Gamers are toxic..." "That was sexist!" "Let's all grow beards and smile with our mouths wide open!"

Alas, their words can't escape the void. The world cares not for their empty drivel. The void around them grows, their sorrow and angst consumes them. They know they serve no purpose. They know they are but empty husks propped up only by their hatred of all that is around them.

As they age, they look back and see the path they've taken, a twisted path leading down into new depths of anger and remorse. They could of course turn heel and find the place the path had split. They could choose a new direction and find the golden land but no, they trek onward further into darkness, further into the void.

My apologies, that was actually a picture of Twinfinite editor Guiseppe Nelva, who had defended Niche Gamer.

Meaning he has directed petty personal insults at the staff of TWO competitors, completely unprovoked.

I see your point. I think a few bad apples are ruining it for everybody. The common reader is going to check out your content and then move on with their lives. The vocal minority are the ones creating the toxicity. As a professional, I always respect my readers. That is just part of not being a bad person, lol. But, I think the gaming community has a growing minority that is very much anti-gaming news. These readers seem to love the concept of gaming news. However, in practice, I think these readers detest actual news writers. So when I say I get hate messages all of the time and it doesn't bother me, it's because I know they do not speak for the gaming community. They speak for a rather hateful minority. Most of it is just a bevy of personal attacks against me and doesn't even have anything to do with my content. It's not that big of a deal. The world keeps turning.

This is the kind of shit that should get a person fired. Not only may his lack of professionalism arguably endangered relations with a major publisher, but he uses a public forum to pick fights with colleagues from other outlets.

If I was SEGA’s public relations firm, I’d be revoking any and all access for this guy and any outlet that he works for— now and in the future. He’s willfully acting like a fucking child, and when children act out, you take their toys away.

If Twitter admins had any balls, they’d strip Kirk the Jerk of his precious blue checkmark.

This deadass just a blog post.

It's this person talking about their sexuality and about how they've been having trouble relating to a character (who is a sadistic psycho bitch villain that NO ONE should relate to) from a fighting game they probably don't play very often.

This is the opposite of journalism. Kotaku is shite.

Meh, I'm honestly not that bothered by Kotaku. I don't enjoy almost any of their content, but I'm glad that kind of platform is able to exist. It's not like they report false facts or anything truly detrimental. They just post a lot of controversial feature stories that seemingly exist solely to stir up shit. They're not the greatest platform, but...meh. I'm pretty apathetic towards them. Though, they did piss off Bethesda by leaking Fallout 4 and that's hilarious. I enjoy Bethesda's games, but the way Bethesda acted in that debacle was...intense.

...and here I thought LiveJournal was dead, but it got moved to Kotaku instead.

Who greenlights this shit? Maybe next we can see a piece about how Resident Evil made someone afraid of dogs or how Super Mario Bros. encouraged recreational use of mushrooms for someone.

What did klepek do?
Long story short, he had a bunch of old social media posts/photos/off-colour jokes (a bit racist/misogynist) and such exposed a while back.

They were honestly pretty tame, but people found it very hypocritical of him considering that the modern day Klepek is a massive virtue-signalling cuck-wimp who has been known to contact someone’s employer to inform them of their employee’s social media use in the hope of getting them fired.

Predictably, his co-conspirators in the gaming media were completely silent on the hypocrisy on display and never mentioned it.

Bonus: He also had a lot of photos of himself with no shirt uploaded to the internet. This was the most baffling considering he looks like a toilet brush with legs. 🤷‍♂️
