I can't believe it.. someone at work actually just went and did it. At lunch we overheard a co-worker talking about this countries morality, or lack thereof, and he actually quipped: "Yeah, If this keeps up, I'm moving to Canada."

My friend and I burst the fuck out laughing immediately. He actually tried to bet me 20 bucks that this would happen sooner or later last Sunday night too. Damn.

Dawkins should maybe not try to talk about history, or politics, or anything that isn't his scientific field, ever.

agreed, blacks would still not have the right to vote in the South and segregation would still be the norm

retcon history is a stupid and doesn't serve the context of the present

OMG that's like seeing bigfoot in person, I'm jealous

Tell me they tried to defend their plan.

On July 20, 2005, Canada became the fourth country in the world, and the first country outside Europe, to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide with the enactment of the Civil Marriage Act which provided a gender-neutral marriage definition. Court decisions, starting in 2003, had already legalized same-sex marriage in eight out of ten provinces and one of three territories, whose residents comprised about 90% of Canada's population. Before passage of the Act, more than 3,000 same-sex couples had already married in those areas.[1] Most legal benefits commonly associated with marriage had been extended to cohabiting same-sex couples since 1999.

The Civil Marriage Act was introduced by Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberal minority government in the Canadian House of Commons on February 1, 2005 as Bill C-38. It was passed by the House of Commons on June 28, 2005, by the Senate on July 19, 2005, and it received Royal Assent the following day. Following the 2006 election, which was won by a Conservative minority government under new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the House of Commons defeated a motion to reopen the matter by a vote of 175 to 123 on December 7, 2006, effectively reaffirming the legislation. This was the third vote supporting same-sex marriage taken by three Parliaments under three Prime Ministers in three different years, as shown below.

You're seeing an increasingly diminishing, hilariously out of touch, white, old, vocal minority. Extremists exist for everything.

Sure there are those people, but it's a lot more people than what you are making it out to be. Religion is still a heavy presence in this country, christian particularly, and for most christians, that seems to mean not supporting gay marriage. Religion has always been a thing with my Southern relatives and my facebook has been flooded with this crap from 15 year olds to 60 year olds.

Usually their disdain is not something that they actively talk about. Basically things seem so crazy right now and we're seeing the worst because they see it as an attack on their personal beliefs and they feel the need to defend themselves.

Europe had centuries of relationship with religion in bed with the monarchy to the point that that some countries decided to divorce themselves from the clerical grip on their countries with anti-clerical movements and separation between church and state.

USA however never underwent that transformation of separation from the grip of the clergy.
The opposite, religious extremists known as the "Puritans" left England to come to America because England was not "pure" enough for them anymore.

Sadly my Aunt and her Husband are very conservative and pretty much spend the day watching Fox News. A incident happened over the weekend that I feel the need to vent about.

Visiting family over the weekend and everything was going great, Saturday night we had to call an ambulance to pick my Grandmother up and long story short she ended up in ICU that night and the next day. Sunday comes and we all decide to visit her before we leave and see how she is doing before we have to leave take the long drive home, my Aunt and her Husband meet us there to see her. Sadly I knew what was going to happen next.

Luckily she waited till after we visited my Grandmother but once we got to the waiting room it happened. She began asking us what we thought about the ruling and I said it was long overdue, my Father agreed and she went off. Telling us we were all going to hell and she wishes we saw her side the "true side" as she put it. I got pretty upset and after asking her to drop it 3 times left the waiting room. Thankfully we were the only ones there but it was just pathetic. My Father got angry and left with me, I went back to say bye to my Grandmother and we left. We later get a call from her saying she doesn't understand why I am so upset, "he's not Gay why does he care so much?" was the question I heard before my Father swiftly said he was busy and hung up.

I knew she was going to be like this but bringing it up at the Hospital while one of the family is in ICU....disgusting. She is family so I care about her but she wonders why I never visit her now that I am older. I can't deal with her when she is like this.

By the way my Grandmother is doing much better and she is home now resting. :)

Weird thing is my Dad is against it (not really religious) and my Mom is ok with the ruling (heavily Catholic)
Figure that one out.

Did you actually tell this guy about Canada and gay marriage? Or would you rather imagine his surprise when he'll learn the news AFTER he moved there?

My stepmom was super excited and changed her profile pic to rainbows, and when I went up to visit them, my dad was not happy. Anyhow, he made some comments about it, I ignored them, I know how my dad is. Anyhow, when I get home, she changed her status to say, "I have had a few days to think about it, and America has to lost its way. While I agree with marriage, people lost ther representation when the government....." and changed her image to have an American flag as a background. I just rolled my eyes, no need to start that

please be a joke.. people shouldn't be allowed to be this batshit insane!

What's weird to me about that is most conspiracy types I've known who worry about that shit are pretty liberal otherwise. I've got a friend who is super paranoid about chemtrails and fluoridation of the water and such, but he'd never take issue with gay marriage.

So last night I was out with my 1 month old and someone asked me what I would do if he was gay. I said love him because he is amazing. They then told me I'm stupid and should dis own him if he becomes gay. I can't deal with stupid people who think this way.

I'm a brit and I've been reading through this thread and watching a bunch of the videos posted. Is America really as insane as it seems? I'm seriously blown away by what I'm seeing here.

Oh come on, we had plenty of our own religious nutbars getting all pissy when same-sex marriage was getting legalised over here too. Hell, a bunch of Conservative MPs (who's government were behind the legislation) voted aginst it and made some horrific comments while doing so. Not to mention Northern Ireland and the backward fucks that currently run the show with veto power there.

I agree some of the reaction in the US has been beyond the pale, but lets not go throwing stones from our house. It might not be made of glass, but we've still got plenty of windows.

This is the sort of thing that would drive me to violence. Someone telling you to disown your kid over their bigotry? That's a paddlin'.

Hopefully if you know these people, you decide to not know them any longer. Saying that about a 1 month old baby is just vile.

"america" is almost a useless term when talking about issues like this. with over 300 million people and political climates that change starkly depending on where you are and what the population of the city is, generalizing is inaccurate

and as always, sometimes the most outspoken are the ones who have the least intelligent things to say

everyone country has a 30% base of crazies. All countries have them. It's just that the 30% crazies in the US are loud thanks to their own Cable TV channel and AM radio stations.

Loud does not mean majority.

Yeah and I would also argue that the fact that gay marriage is now legal, that says a lot more about America as a country and the people in it than bigoted loudmouths.

There's some pastor that threatened to light himself on fire if homosexual marriage becomes a globally legal.

I can't fathom why people are so against homosexual marriage. If they think it's a sin why aren't people fighting to make swearing, lying, using the Lords name in vain, not keeping the Sabbath day holy, wearing mixed fabrics, etc illegal? Seems to be picking and choosing what to follow.

It's not natural? Humans are part of nature to assert we're somehow separate from nature is audacious. Not to mention multiple species in nature exhbit homoseuxal and bisdxual behaviours. Also most of those people use a technological device to spread their hatred...look a computer outside of it's natural habit how phenomenal.

Honestly what two(or more if you're into polygamy I ain't judging) consenting adults do in their home is no one else's business but their own.

A friend and I were buying Big Gulps at 7/11. The women behind us said, sarcastically, "congrats on being able to get married." I don't know if that counts as salt, but it pissed us off. Neither of us are gay. Idk.

edit: that she thought we were gay didn't piss us off. that she was an asshole to strangers pissed us off.
