GC: DriveClub gameplay

Question for those who played it, how bad was the AI rubber-banding? As bad as it was in Motorstorm, Horizon, etc? Better?

The AI in motorstorm was/is not "rubber-banded". Instead each AI opponent drives to within a set time (which is sometimes as ridiculous since you will see some unbelievable laptimes if the lead AI opponent, for example, gets held up quite often due to accidents/altercations).

The game is never "unfair" though since It basically encourages you to find the fastest/perfect line and route (master the track) for each vehicle and then you will win - just about always.

With DC's focus on challenges and lap times though i seriously doubt they'd be using the same kind of AI. If anything the AI will probably be extremely barebones and just there to fill the numbers

When I read that "we already hate your game" thread this game is exactly what came to mind. People flipping out when being shown a work in progress, rushing to judgement before a final product is ever displayed. The latest bit of media looks fantastic.

This and the 1886 thread, its reasons we dont get to see alot of game real early on and they are hidden to behind closed doors viewings for press. Because people jump all over everything, every little thing is nitpicked even though games could be months or even a year away from hitting they arnt given the benefit of the doubt, im guilty of it myself so i understand why devs are very cagey of there games and states in which they are shown. A bad unveil of even pre alpha cod like dc at e3 can hurt the game in the long run. Because the internet.

Great impressions. Would you say that DC is hands down the better looking game, or are they pretty close?

It is pretty hard to call at the moment. Certainly not "hands down", but in terms of ambition and scale, I'd give it to Driveclub since Forza is playing it pretty safe - just a much more refined and polished version of the previous games. I still have to deduct marks from Driveclub though, cause it is not quite up to scratch in terms of quality compared to Forza but it is certainly getting there :)

EDIT: But Driveclub is still very much an Alpha build. I get the impression Forza is further along and is Beta. Oh and I felt the cosmetic damage looked better in Driveclub compared to Forza.

Pretty much. It's a double-edged sword though because now by not showing direct-feed gameplay, those same people will say that it's because the game is in rough shape that they don't want to give us good quality video to examine it. You can't really win because so many people have their minds made up already and will do anything to justify their decisions.

I think The Order 1886 is going to amaze people personally and I'm glad RAD is getting a chance at the big leagues although it would have been nice to have a Vita game from them first. :D What they did on the PSP was insane so I can only imagine what they can do now. Sounds like they're showing a lot of early stuff that wouldn't go over well with the public who will criticize everything about it in that early of a stage.

This is my most anticipated next-gen game and I absolutely can't wait to play it, however Evolution's refusal to show any direct feed gameplay footage (despite being constantly requested on social media and many forums) is really weird and concerns me slightly. What are they afraid of?
I think Rushy said they were going to try and get some direct feed gameplay soon.

Rushy is good for answering any questions via twitter - he confirmed to me that there is a bonnet-cam (my particular preferred driving camera/view) and that yes the gamescon demo was running at 30fps. I really hope they can get to 60fps for release.

His twitter is @Rushy33

I've finally managed to get my deblending script to work as it should. Do you guys want me to reencode the video so that it doesn't have ghosting anymore?
We are going to try and do another video of the GC demo today, but it's not going to show many new things.

It needs to be said that Forest landscape is several times harder to do than city landscape.

Also that video clearly isn't from gameplay. Do we have any direct feed gameplay videos from forza? Looked on gamersyde but couldn't find one.

Probably not worth the trouble considering we're getting direct feed soon.

Another vid of the gamescon demo would be great. The more the better, even if we are getting direct feed footage.

I understand if it was too much trouble though as your filming a lot of footage already

One camera is gone to Sony's booth right now, they have 20 minutes before another behind closed doors demo so hopefully it will be enough time to do a quick DriveClub video.

Rushy33 also confirmed that they would announce compatible wheels closer to launch...

Nice to see they take the time to answer our questions. Kudos to them...

Hopefully they've managed to convince Logitech to release PS4 drivers. I know they're no longer making peripherals for consoles, so that one makes me a bit worried.

Actually I hope that new drivers won't even be needed... standard USB and here we go...

Come on Sony, don't be a dick.

May have been posted but looks like us wheel fanatics will have to wait a little longer for important news.

From @Rushy33: @cassiusclay99 We'll be announcing compatible wheels closer to launch. Hope you're at Gamescom and get to play DRIVECLUB.

Cool. After looking at your vids can never go back to youtube quality. You do great work

but didn't they recently announce they are still partnering with Sony for PS4? possible silver lining?

Care to elaborate? Not havin' a go, just wondering what your impressions are.

You should probably keep an eye on your Messages because I'm sure a mod will soon want to hear about your gamescom experience.

i ve stated it already in another driveclub thread and didnt want to repeat myself, which would make me look like a hater.

i ve seen a lot of screens and vids before GC and was impressed by the graphics. as a sim fan i knew its not going to be another GT/FM. so i didnt come with false expectations.

so what can i tell you? the game looked like shit compared to the screens i ve seen before. of course those rubbish LCDs at GC are adding their partto it, but the game looked like a mess of pixels. nothing you couldnt expect from the current gen (i dont care about shadows and if they re correct). but i care about sharpness and clear pictures, which i didnt see there.

the race physics itself were, boring. its neither a fast paced arcade game nor a sim like thing in between like pgr. arcady racers which dont give me a sense of speed, arent interessting (for me).

so at all i was bored and dissapointed. same with my friends and some people around me. of course there have been a lot of amazed people, too.

so just wait for it :D
but dont believe the hype, maybe you ll be happier if you expect less.

This iq problem seems really weird. I wonder how crappy are the lcd settings there. I remember seeing Mario 3d World WiiU at japan Expo and it looked incredibly ugly and aliased with burned contrasted and awful saturation, + probable sharpening of edges.. You had to watch the Gamepad to see how it was meant to look like.

Blim. Can you explain how on your videos you've manage to have the HUD look relatively white, whereas most other vids it's a pale blue/grey.

Is it the camera or some post-processing technique?

No post processing outside of deinterlacing and deblending. I don't know if that text is supposed to be white or not, but we usually know how to calibrate our cameras very very well :)

Anyway, new video is up, with a second one coming in a few minutes:

I'm assuming it's white, it would fit the aesthetic from their released images and clips.

Those environments are unreal.

Trees look like real life!

I know, right? I think the foliage in general is the most impressive thing to me outside of the lighting. That's why I'm still struggling to see how people were calling them cardboard and last-gen earlier in the thread...

He went onto two wheels at 3:20. I wonder if you can roll the cars over in this.

up to this build, doesn't seem like it.
look at the latest video blim just did, with the green mercedes. around 43-44sec, the ghost car in front tries to take a turn in full speed, crashes, and you can see that upon the car lifting from the hit, there is some force that artificially takes it back down from the air to the ground. its been done in other games like this.
could be changed later on, but for now i'd say there are no flips

sense of speed seems pretty decent from these new gamersyde videos. camera pulls away from the car when going over 100 to make everything seem to go by faster.

although I think the first person camera or that new zoomed into top of dashboard cameras are the way to go for a sense of speed.

Between now and launch, Evo really needs to show us direct feed gameplay video with other cars on the track. not as a trailer, just gameplay. No more single ghosts.
