I haven't finished the Aftermath campaign yet but it's night and day compared to the Judgment campaign. The complete lack of scoring makes it feel more like old Gears. It would have been a better compromise if People Can Fly made both campaigns playable in Story and Arcade modes. Of course, at that point Judgment's lack of story would be laid bare. You have to liken to to a L4D meets score attack experience because it certainly isn't reminiscent of any previous Gear's campaign.
Aftermath, on the other hand, could have been Gears 3 DLC and it would fit right in.
