Gears of War: Reloaded - Reviews Thread

Played through tutorial and Act 1

Locked 60fps on high on steam deck. Looks fine. Plays well.

Didn't analyze stones and statues. But killed and spewed blood all over instead

It's worth my $40 and I'm not upset about it

I'm happy with it. The old PC port was completely broken while this one plays really well and it still looks good. It's also good timing for me as I never played the rest of games and have been meaning to go through them.

Its age is somewhat showing but that's just the nature of it. I would have wanted an option to turn off that shaky cam though as that awful trend died 15 years ago.

8/10

There's an option to turn off the shaky cam. That was one of the first things I did lol.

IGN reviewer mentioned that they had to turn off the adaptive triggers on PS's controllers after a bit.

I don't understand the appeal either, why would you want fake resistance on your thumbs pressing the button.

Turn that shit off, better experience *and* longer battery life as a nice added bonus.

Lol I turned them off on day 2 of PS5, awful feature

Microsoft destroys everything they touch :)

Wtf man

Played through to the end of the vehicle section (which after 20 years still annoys me they live in a world of insta-death flying creatures and make it an open top), it is indeed the same game but looks better. Not necessarily a bad thing though, the original is the most straightforward story wise and does a great job of building a brutal world with some hints that the good guys might not be so good.

Looking forward to playing again in a few weeks.

A cool extra would have been a compilation of the first 3 games on a separate disc, that have zero enhancements. Just bare bones 360 ports but in higher resolution and frame rate.

Glad to hear they fixed it. I've played the Ultimate Edition PC port earlier this year and it still had some issues like flickering textures, model and environmental glitches, bugged cutscenes and the like

Anyone know how to get the DualSense haptics and speaker working from playing via the Xbox pc app?

I got it wired, firmware up to date, vibration turned on in the game.

It seems from some screenshots comparisons that the remaster doesn't seem as "gritty" or "run down, rusty and derelict" as the original in areas and other bits.

It's a real turn-off and shows that better tech doesn't make a game look better. In a sense that it preserves the original purpose.
Makes me feel nostalgic towards the original Gears game with CliffyB and his team crafting everything with a specific intention.

The original was mind blowing in 2006, but personally I prefer the more colorful approach of the remake, the OG is too much gray, lifeless.

But I agree the rain in act 3 is a massive downgrade.

Playing it right now.

And yeah, it's Gears Ultimate but sharper. The performance is rock-fuckin'-solid.

The re-rendered / downsampled 8K video cut-scenes also look fantastic.

OG's atmosphere remains unbeaten, tho.

Yeah, they really brightened it up where they shouldn't have. Adding color is fine. I like that part, but the parts that should be dark and scary really aren't anymore.

Yeah you have to wack the contrast up on this, the game is too washed out on default

although going too high and it looks too dark for screenshots, but this is all perfectly viable on my end, just dark internally

When you first played those scenes there's a good chance you played on a CRT which has great black levels. Not everyone would have an OLED today which can do dark just as well, makes sense to boost it because it would look pretty shit on an average LCD display, that's what I think anyway.

Actually I think they nerfed the difficulty massively. I remember some Acts were just brutal inthr OG game, here we haven't had any big obstacle when beating it on Insane.
I think you might be right because so far it's waaay too easy, Uncharted was more unforgiving.
And what is it with games from the 2000's, The game is 20 year's old and I'm still looking in awe at the environments.
This ain't Gears exclusive, it's just the art direction was just something else back then.
And they kinda ruined it here but it still stands out.

I watched a comparison video on YouTube of the original and this new one and they totally sucked the life out of the game. It has no sense of art direction. All the characters look like they're wearing lip gloss, there's no brooding danger felt at all. It's really sad cuz it shows just how much spirit the OG had with fewer resources. Maybe that's the problem with modern game visuals, creativity is being sacrificed for visual clarity. Bad trend.

E-Day looks way grittier and gnarly, so hopefully that means Xbox onboarded marketing/leadership people who actually know what's up and what the vibe should ideally be (holy shit, they need that kind of talent badly). I can't be all negative though, it's still OG Gears and it's great.

Despite Nu-Xbox's usual creative and tonal efforts to the contrary, it's still a banger.

I disagree on the characters, sure they could of retained some of the facial grit but things like the veins popping out their arms are just toned down and are better for it, I think the previous look was too extreme

Everything else you said I agree with, you don't have to be able to see in every dark corner.
This also true of movies that seem washed out these days like it was films in the 70's with poor contrast.

The way I understand it's a visual update for the 2015 remaster. I never played the 2015 one, so no idea what was done with it.

The MAIN purpose of this was to bring it to Playstation.
Okay, thanks. When I played it back then, it was clear the AI systems were a bit dated like how your squad would get in the way of your line of sight if you are engaging enemies without using cover.

This game needed a OT
sorry for the double post but can you vault over stuff without going into cover?
Also 2006

Is this just a visual update, like have they improved the AI?
It all feels like it's still the stupid like a donkey AI as it was in 2006. I guess the entire game is still an UE3 game at its core.

I don't know how they fixed the gnasher, but it feels way better compared to the beta although the gnasher spread is still the same.

Tried a versus match, managed to go 0 and 14 emptying clips into people who ran up and one shotted me with the Gnasher.

Yep, that part is working just as intended.

Man, Gears multi was and still is an acquired taste, personally, I couldn't stand the fact that you had to unload 1 and a half clip into roadie running enemies and those performing the wall hugging ballet that one-shot you with the gnasher...
I was more of a Halo guy during the X360 for this specific reason.
Generally speaking, the multiplayer is the definition of "marmite" and I mostly enjoyed the co-op campaigns and horde modes as to avoid the VS/PvP fuckery.

Anyway, I must have finished the 1st game 'bout 10 times already between the X360 version, the XSX BC one and the Ultimate edition and yet, I'm still itching to get this, thing is, there's so many games coming out soon (Shinobi, Cronos next week, Silent hill F on the 25th, NG4 in October) that I just don't know...

👍 For the ambience music, it's keeping my 12" Sub occupied.
Kinda reminds me of Alien.
