Gears of War: Reloaded - Reviews Thread

Man, Gears multi was and still is an acquired taste, personally, I couldn't stand the fact that you had to unload 1 and a half clip into roadie running enemies and those performing the wall hugging ballet that one-shot you with the gnasher...
I was more of a Halo guy during the X360 for this specific reason.
Generally speaking, the multiplayer is the definition of "marmite" and I mostly enjoyed the co-op campaigns and horde modes as to avoid the VS/PvP fuckery.

Anyway, I must have finished the 1st game 'bout 10 times already between the X360 version, the XSX BC one and the Ultimate edition and yet, I'm still itching to get this, thing is, there's so many games coming out soon (Shinobi, Cronos next week, Silent hill F on the 25th, NG4 in October) that I just don't know...
If you have the Ultimate Edition, you get it for free. Or with GP
I got Reloaded via a MS chat message and took me straight to the store to redeem my free preorder

I'll probably get to it sometime during the holidays because I have too many games not to mention movies and TVs to catch up on.

I'm starting to remember why I don't play Gears MP. I light people up with the Lancer, and some dude one shots me with the Gnasher. I guess the solution is to use the Gnasher also, but I don't get the same results. Anyone got any suggestions?

Gears 1 is css (meaning the shots come from the center of the screen, not the barrel).

If you're hip firing, take that in mind.

Should have just ported the OG, the remaster ruined the artstyle.

Og guy actually looks like 50 cent.

Lancer is only for long range. Gnasher is one hit kill at point blank, or else aim for the knees if you're a bit further away.

At least I think that's what I remember.

Yeah you have to wack the contrast up on this, the game is too washed out on default

although going too high and it looks too dark for screenshots, but this is all perfectly viable on my end, just dark internally

I've just tested your advice, and you're right: the game looks much better with the contrast settings turned up. I have never seen such drastic transformation from changing contrast settings, it's like entire lighting was calculated differently.

I've set the contrast to 80% in the game settings and with HDR enabled I can still see all the details in the shadows, but at the same time I can now see deep shadows that I didnt even noticed at all before.

Playing it right now.

And yeah, it's Gears Ultimate but sharper. The performance is rock-fuckin'-solid.

The re-rendered / downsampled 8K video cut-scenes also look fantastic.

OG's atmosphere remains unbeaten, tho.
It sucks that MS never bothered to patch Gears 1 original for 4k ...i played Gears 2 lasr night via BC on SX and it looks pretty damn good at 4k/60. Gears 3 is only 144pp/60 but Gears 1 is still 720p

Console BC still has a wayys to go to be great. I was hopeful this gen we'd get every BC game upscaled to 4k/60 but that was a pipe dream

I think I settled on 80% too, also brightness doesn't effect the whole image like you'd think.
More like a white point or highlight

Was excited to jump in yesterday, got everything logged in and ready just for it to crash and never boot again. Can't change graphics settings at all.

Crazy that made it past QA.

This is like a remaster of a remaster. Everyone probably knows what this is at this point. They should really remaster GoW 2 & 3, instead of re-releasing the first game again.
One of the craziest things MS did with the Xbone is not remaster Gears 2 and 3. This current release really should have been a Gears Trilogy.

Just played a bit on PC GamePass. First time since the Xbox 360 days, but man, it's still a ton of fun. Really holds up well, I'd say.

Can't wait to "look at all that juice" again in remastered glory.

One of the best under-stated improvements this Reloaded version brings is that you can finally disable the camera shake when roadie running.

Shit got way too frantic. I'm glad they added the option to turn it off.

Yep same here. I see massive amounts of people having the same issue. I refunded it. Oh well.

Just found out it is, seriously thinking about picking it up to play with him.

Gears 1 is a great game and excellent for campaign Co-op. It's a linear TPS, simple and fun. The dialogue is really entertaining IMO with great characters. It's your classic dude bro shooter from the early 2000s and will no doubt get your testosterone pumping.

was this release supposed to be a big deal or just a fart in the wind?... is this game expected to dominated, to Trojan Horse the Play Station sales charts?

It's against the law to release a bug free game on PC Computer.

I'm genuinely curious about the PlayStation bros reception, hope they like it.

Playing on steamdeck and playing games on that almost feels like a new experience for me. Played an act so far and it's nice to replay this one again. Graphics still hold up pretty well for me.

Imagine a full playthrough uploaded to Youtube between you, Buggy Loop Buggy Loop and me discussing woke videogames commentary while shooting locusts

Horde was great fun even with randoms, but as you say the skill ceiling is very high in PvP so it's not casual friendly at all.

My guess is that they wanted to bring Gears 1 to PS ecosystem in time before E-Day, since that game will be a prequel of 1. They will probably still remaster 2 and 3 down the road.

It warns that I'm below minimum spec every launch. But it runs fine, as it should, it's more remaster of Ultimate (which was more remake). The text to speech is on by default and can't be turned off (or rather it already is off and toggling it in the settings does nothing), that's quite annoying for sure.

Gears 1 is a weird one to judge now, after Gears 2 and 3, because Epic raised the bar by a lot in both the sequels. The first one was great but the multiplayer wasnt really where its at yet, and limited compared to multiplayer in Gears 3. And now 4 and 5.

Hopefully Gears 2 is getting a makeover and will be out in timely fashion because its really where the series started to shine.

It is funny seeing people meet reality finally. I remember how many people were in disbelief when I said part 4 is easily one of the best ones. I like all of them but they're just not clearly superior to 4, which is almost on par graphically with a Naughty Dog game.

This runs like a dream on Pro in 120 FPS mode. Looks so clean as well.
You can clearly see it's X360-era game in terms of design and execution, but it's still super fun.

I watched a comparison video on YouTube of the original and this new one and they totally sucked the life out of the game. It has no sense of art direction. All the characters look like they're wearing lip gloss, there's no brooding danger felt at all. It's really sad cuz it shows just how much spirit the OG had with fewer resources. Maybe that's the problem with modern game visuals, creativity is being sacrificed for visual clarity. Bad trend.

There are a lot of people who say this about remakes, such as Halo Anniversary and the 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, but I have never felt the changes were that significant and detracted that much from the experience that I would ever miss from the original - until now. Gears looks different enough that it's a generic version of itself. It won't stop me from playing or enjoying it, but it's definitely a negative.

Only the lack of Wander's degradation bothered me in the 2018 remake, I loved the art otherwise - and the change from foggy brown to lush environments was a positive IMO, since it further drove home the point that there was something more to the Forbidden Lands than the name would suggest. The colossi were living mostly peacefully in nature without humans.
