"Hopefully, there will be enough evidence to see what went wrong. Whether there will be enough science left inside remains to be seen."

:lol :lol I'm reminded of The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra.

"My GOD! Look at all this Science!"

Radioactive sun particles could be leaking all over the area as we speak, bringing the dead back to life with a hunger for living human brains!!!!!!

What? When will it happen?

One can only hope.

NASA seems to have their "fly millions of miles through space" thing down pat. It's the endgame they need to work on. It's like driving cross-country and then driving into the ocean.

Hmm...the stuff inside was too fragile to afford even a parachute landing, and that's why they had the helos ready to catch the parachute. I feel bad for the people who have been working on the project; it was the work of a couple decades apparently.

So i take it by the time a craft without maneuvering capabilities reenters the atmosphere, the landing path is basically predetermined, and the chutes are used solely for slowing the reentry speed? Imagine the destruction, even on a somewhat small scale, if this thing crashed in an inhabited area, like a city.

"Professor, without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for our viewers to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?"

"Yes I would, Kent."

Well the capsule isn't that big and the crater it left wasn't that big either. Someone's home/car might have been crushed or similar but it wouldn't have caused much destruction.

So how long will it take the Genesis Wave to sweep out from the crash site and rewrite this planet?

So much for the damed Hollywood stunt pilots that were supposed to catch it.. :p

But I guess it depended on the parachute opening in the first place lol.

It appears that the cause of the pain was that the timer which was supposed to engage when the craft hit 3Gs didn't go off and fire the mortar charges that would make the chutes open. This isn't the first time this approach has failed. The Mars polar explorer failed to turn off its engines because the jolt that was supposed to signal touchdown was the same as when the chutes deployed and it too ended up as an expensive lawn dart.

Perhaps its time to come up with another way to know when its time to deploy the chutes/turn off the engines?

Hopefully the inner capsule, containing the sun ions, survived...though I don't know how it would. I'm surprised the explosives that were supposed to trigger the chutes didn't explode upon impact.

They have to be ignited by the timer. Its kinda like how dynamite doesn't explode if you throw it at a wall (though I wouldn't recommend it) :)

One would wonder, however, why they didn't have a backup 'in case timer burns out on reentry' radio signal that they could fire from the helicopters or similar.

I highly doubt it. Apparently the device is extremely delicate...hence the hollywood helicopter people being needed to retreive it, instead of letting it parachute down.

Why the fuck were those guys just walking up to it and trying to look inside? Taking pictures and shit? Aren't solar particles radioactive? What if there were germs/virus/bacteria that is foreign to Earth in there or on the capsule, ala The Andromeda Strain?

This is retarded. How can an organization of supposedely our most brilliant people cosistently and repeatedly fuck up on the stupidest little shit? This happens OVER and OVER and OVER.

I mean its not rocket science..... oh wait :)

Why does EVERYONE confuse the Return of the Living Dead movies with the "of the Dead" movies?

That's a shame - CBC had a radio interview with one of the helicopter pilots who was going to attempt and retrieve it during the parachute freefall. The plans they had put together to snag it sounded quite ingenious, it would have been great to see it come together.

I hope that something can be salvaged from the wreckage - all that work, gone (most likely). Bummer.

I know, but this is inconceivable. NASA can do such incredible things and then everything goes to hell like some sort of Looney Tunes cartoon. It's like getting a 1600 on your SATs and forgetting to put your name on the test.
