Damn shame if this gets worse. HW was one of the more respectable Republicans. Served in WW2, helped end the Soviet Union, and was willing to raise taxes to help the US economy.

Hope everything turns out alright for him but this isn't true and neither did Reagan. That's a myth created by recent American folklore. Them being there at the time was incidental.

I hope he recovers, it gets harder and harder to do at his age though.

Edit: I ran across an interesting fact a few days ago when I was browsing birth dates, dates in office for US Presidents. Bush Jr, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump were all born in the same year - 1946.

Yeah, it was more glasnost and perestroika by Gorbachev than any American meddling that ended it.

Hope he pulls through however. Probably the last of somewhat decent Republians. Sure the only one of the post 1950 era.

To be fair, I only said he helped end it.

Also apparently he's recovering and will be home soon, so i guess I jumped the gun on this thread. If a mod wants to lock this thread that's understandable.

All seriousness, I wish him well. Always had great respect for him as President for raising taxes when he saw the reality of the USA budget.

You don't get shot down over the Pacific by the Japanese AND become the top spy in America only to die of something lame like a heart attack.

It was actually the Soviet Union going broke trying to keep up an arms race with the US.

It was fine. You were making fun of Trump, not HW but a lot of gafers think some subjects should not be joked about. Doesn't mean they are right.

Thanks, and yes, it was Trump who was the butt of my joke. HW is one of the better men to be President, politics aside.

Raising taxes was the right thing to do. It cost him his presidency, but he did it anyway. We need more people like him in leadership.

HBO released a very good biography of him in 2012 called "41", well worth looking up if you haven't seen it

It's more of a catch up with him and look at his life in retirement than any sort of critique on his presidency

Folks like him and Romney for all their horrible policy ideas, genuinely believe in some glossy vision of America that isn't just a privatized dog eat dog apocalypse and for that, they should be respected. Because what their party is now, is basically an oligarchy feeding on the energy of racism and religious fervor.
Hope he gets better. We need senior figures pointing out how disgraceful all this has become.

Is this the same Mitt Romney who wanted to privatize the police and firefighters?

HW Bush was a flawed but ultimately responsible steward of his country, and he's certainly the most respectful Republican president in my lifetime, if not the last 60 or so years.
