George Lucas "privilege" Empire Strikes Back voted no.1, wasn't always a trilogy

It's on the list though. In the top 100. lol

At least it isn't number 1. There was some fan poll on a magazine last year or something that had Serenity as the greatest science fiction film of all time.

We live in a world where Joss Whedon is the most bankable director going right now, so I guess anything's possible.

Heck, even stuff like Transformers (Bay), Revenge of the Sith, Skyfall (at number 45, might I add), The Dark Knight Rises, Star Trek Into Darkness, and The Hunger Games made the list .

The first time I ever watched the trilogy, I rented all three films on VHS from Blockbuster and watched Empire first by mistake. I have no regrets.

He has only made one bankable movie. I would say Michael Bay is more bankable. And Nolan.

As much as I enjoyed some of those, I would never consider them to be some of the 100 best films ever.

A New Hope is a better movie though.
Its name is Star Wars ;)
But yeah, I agree.

Also, that list is quite terrible, a lot of great movie, a lot of WTF, but that's how fan lists are.

p.s.
I never understood how anyone believed the whole "I planned 9 movies from the start" bullshit.

You're right, but I'm just assuming that his next one's going to make another 1bil+ just because it exists, so for this weird moment in time Whedon is king.

cameron made a movie with those ugly ass blue cat aliens make more than 2 BILLION.

whedon isn't king. he answers to feige and co like all the others at that studio.

edit: almost 3 billion, christ.

ESB is my favorite movie that I wouldn't actually put on a critical "best movies" list. I'm a huge SW fan, but its mostly just dumb fun, its not on the same level as films like 2001, The Fountain, Fight Club, Memento, etc.

"I never really planned it to be three separate films but when it became three separate films, it had an interesting effect of each film having its own personality, caused by the plot."

I love these quotes from George because he thinks he's saying something really profound but really he's not.

Also, yeah. I'm alright with this. Empire is the best Star Wars movie by far and definitely one of my all time favorite films.

It's good but... Better than the Godfather?

Not in a trillion billion years.

<old_man_rant>Where's Kane? Where's Casablanca? The Searchers? Lawrence? Who the fuck voted in this? Teenagers and twenty-somethings that only watch five movies a year? I fucking hate this poll.</old_man_rant>

ESB is the GOAT, truly a masterpiece.

And TDK in 3rd is a fucking joke, i could see being somewhere in a Top 100 or even in a Top 50, but 3rd? NOPE.

Minus 2001, I'd say Empire belongs exactly alongside those type of films. It's a better film than Fight Club and The Fountain.

Batman sequel The Dark Knight, starring Heath Ledger, came in third, with The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction rounding off the top five.
The rest of the 10 are:

6. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

7. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

8. Jaws

9. Raiders Of The Lost Ark

10. Inception
I don't even dislike most of these films, but to put them on an "all times top 10" is laughable.

The Godfather and Jaws are the only 2 in the top 10 that deserve to be anywhere near the top 10.
I don't find even pulp Fiction particularly out of place, personally, but that said this is essentially a list of (mostly) good entertaining movies to spend an evening with friends, hardly stuff that deserves to be mentioned as "all times bests".

This is the kind of best-of list for guys I knew in college with the super-sized bong and the blacklight Scarface poster. Where's Fight Club?

At its release maybe you wouldn't hear that sentiment as much as you do now, but I think tolerance for a really deliberately paced movie that doesn't pander to the audience is really growing smaller and smaller each year. Then again, the only people I've really heard say that 2001's unwatchable are college kids, maybe kids were unimpressed back then, too.

Deliberately paced? It's glacial... I literally cannot sit through it. One of the most overrated films ever made, I'll never understand why people hold it in such high regard.

Lol. Still isn't 3rd best movie of all time. That's just fucking ridiculous.

It's a list of movies people like. The whole notion of "best of all time" is dumb, because there's no way to judge such a thing without going into full on movie elitist mode. This is a list made by average people who don't give a fuck about the "art" of movies, they just go by what they think is fucking awesome.

I can't believe there are so many people blown away by Dark Knight being on the list. "People really like the 4th highest grossing movie ever!?" <--
In the US.
