Getting either an Xbox or PS2

I've finally decided it's time to get another system. My brother is leaning towards an Xbox while I'm thinking we should go with PS2. For the most part we want to go online with one of them. Xbox at first seems like the system to go online with but I'm not so sure - more titles look interesting on PS2. But after quickly searching through the game lists of each system I've only found a few titles that really interest me.

Xbox
Halo 2
Mech Assault

PS2
Katamari Damacy
Metal Gear Solid 3
Rez

My lists are pathetic. I know there's more out there for each of them but I just can't seem to think of which ones. Maybe I'll look through my old EGMs. What are some nice online titles for each system? Good titles in general?

tough call, really. both are good systems with plenty of good games. I'd recommend getting one, then the other after a price drop.

If you already have a decent PC, get a PS2.

Well that's the thing, my dad won't allow any games on our comp - so my bro was going to get another one for Xmas. I thought that was ridiculous and I suggested maybe we should just get another system. One big worry is how reliable the PS2 is with hardware - all my friends have had to return one eventually to get it fixed. I don't want to have that sort of hassle.

If thats all the games you want, save your money and dont get either system.

I'm positive I want more games for each - I just can't remember. I can recall plenty of times looking through gaming mags and kicking myself for not having a Ps2/Xbox after looking at a game.

And I do plan on getting both eventually.

KOTOR & KOTOR 2>>>>>>>>PS2

I would seriously go the Xbox, it gets a lot of the Best PC and PS2 games plus it’s own original content.

Get a PS2 or get both, I have both and only after I bought the Xbox I realized that there aren't too many great games on it. Online is good on Xbox(using the 2 month trial for Xbox live, but no headset :( ), because it really has no lag, period. But online is kinda overrated for me and that's why i'd say PS2 is much better. It has atleast 10x the amount of quality games that the Xbox has. Though when I got a PS2, I had to basically beg my parents to get one of those expensive mem card (now I have two) but since an Xbox comes with a HD, non mem card hassle there. Plus I like ripping my songs on to the HD, but I wish more games supported custom soundtracks.

Overall, even after buying these two, i still play my Gamecube the most :)

I was considering the same thing a while back, but decided to forgo both temporarily while I wait for PSP. But it is a tough decision if you're casual about gaming right now. If you're hardcore, get the PS2. It's a no-brainer, just way more games for it. OTOH, Xbox has better graphics, and it has a lot of the PS2 games, but not all. Now, if GTA:SA is high on the list (and it would be for me), get the PS2, b/c the Xbox version may never come out. If you need Halo2, get the Xbox. That's pretty much how it is IMO. Those will be the two distinguishing games, everything else is easy to find on either system. They both get the major titles AFAIK. If you had a PS2 before, or a PS1, you could try the Xbox just for variety's sake. Then again, who am I to give gaming advice anymore? I've gone totally casual over the last few years, so my opinion is kinda invalid. PEACE.

It depends really. Sure PS2 has the bigger back-catalog of "good/great" games. But Xbox has had the most triple A titles this year. And some of the PS2 titles that are considered "great" are dated and not so fun anymore... Onimusha has not aged well with it's dated graphics and horrible controls, neither has MGS 2. I just got around to playing it recently and hated it. So if you want the most up-to-date gaming at it's best, and the most technologically advanced console, with the best Online network. Choose the Xbox.

With xenon in 2005, xbox next year will be kinda pathetic lineup wise past Q1, i can only think of jade empire, forza and conker.

With PS2 you have GTA SA, jak3 and MGS3 right now, GT4, FFXII, DQ8, wanda, suikoden 4, digital devil saga, devil may cry 3, etc

It basicly comes down to what type of games you like, ps2 next year will be an rpg monster.

Honestly, I couldn't part with either. The PS2 has a great accumulated library at this point, and in the past year or so the xbox has really come into its own. Jade empire, conker, and Mechassault 2 all still in the pipe, to boot.

For online, there is NO power greater than X.

I'm telling you. Get XBL (Crimson Skies pack-in, which is an AWESOME game) and pick a couple Xbox Live titles. You'll be addicted. There's a pain in my stomache from not having Xbox Live.

BUY A PSTWO

with:

Final Fantasy X
Katamari Damacy
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Metal Gear Solid 3

Online is free! Out of the box! It's like the Dreamcast!

If you've waited this long, get a PS2. The XBOX software doesn't look that hot after this year thanks to the XBOX2. PS2 and Cube have some good stuff coming up(Final Fantasy XII, Resident Evil 4, The Legend of Zelda) while the XBOX has next to nothing.

I'm in the same dilemma. :/

I only have enough cash to buy one of the said consoles but i'm torn. On the one hand you have the greatness that is Halo 2 (that i've already beaten on normal, and halfway through on Heroic, on a friends Xboxen), and on the other there are a countless number of excellent single player experiences.

Right now i'm leaning towards the PSTwo because i have finals coming up and i think if i buy Halo 2 and the box and play online, my grades on all of the tests will decline. Once i go home for christmas break i won't have broadband internet either. I'm thinking a PSTwo, Katamari, and GTA will tide me over for the break, and if i have enough dough i can get an Xboxen and Halo 2 when i return to school so i can play on live.

well, he can't put games on his dad's PC, so how else is he going to play games like Doom 3, KOTOR2, Pirates!, Half Life 2, etc? they aren't coming to ps2.

I'm assuming you have a Cube already because you say "another system".

What you need to ask yourself is:

1. Do I want a system that fills in the Cube's void in terms of FPSes, Sports games. (XBOX)

OR

2. Do I want a system that offers me alot more of the types of games on the Cube? (PS2)

Um

Jade Empire: which could potentially be the best RPG this gen, developed by Bioware of KOTOR and Baldur’s gate fame.

KOTOR 2

Conker

Mech assault 2

Kameo

Oddworld stranger

Forza

Doom 3

Streetfighter AC

Starwars republic commando

KOF 02/03

Timespliters future perfect

Splinter cell chaos theory

Metal Slug 4/5

Battle flied modern combat

Metal gear solid 3 (i am speculating)

I am not saying the Xbox has a better line up then the GC or PS2 next year/ the end of this year but saying the "Xbox has next to nothing" "the software doesn;t look that hot" is bullshit.

HOW MANY GAMES ARE YER GONNA PLAY.

The PSTWO has a 10 billion fucking games... woohooo The Xbox has only 5 billion fucking games. Seriously.

Online + games that actually look like they belong this gen it's the Xbox, otherwise get yerself a PSTwo. You win either way.

It really depends on the games. If you like western style RPGs, the best graphics and FPS games, then get an xbox. If you like JRPGs, platformers and a huge library of other titles then get a PS2.

I'd go with the smaller redesigned PS2 since everyone is saying that the xenon will debut next xmas. No reason to get a system that's about to be replaced.

But what if you can't play Xbox games on it? And when you say "replaced", wouldn't the PS2 be replaced by the Xenon aswell? Since both the PS2 and Xbox are this generation...

The only system that will replace the PS2, will be the PS3...

If you want online you want Xbox.

Halo 2
DOA Ultimate
Burnout 3
Conker
Forza
Mechassault 2
KOTOR 2
Splinter Cell CT
Jade Empire

And of course pure speculation but I'm sure GTA SA and Metal Gear Solid 3 are both coming to Xbox. Both of the previous versions in these series came to Xbox and the double pack sold quite well so no reason for GTA SA not to make it. No matter how much the haters want to hate I'm sure MGS 3 will also make an appearance.

HATORADE! :lol

PSTwo; tons of games, free out of the box online.

XBOX does have better graphics, but we're not talking PSP vs. DS here... PS2 actually looks great on a nice TV via S-Video or Component. The games have an attractive, sharp, well-defined look (XBOX games appear to have a slight blur filter applied). Graphics do suffer when played through composite on an average tube.

The online catalogue on the Xbox stomps a mudhole and rips the PS2's online games a new asshole. No joke.
this news is the most believable news i read today.

if you have any interestl in online games, get an xbox. otherwise, a ps2 is good.

Xbox Live! is superior to Sony PS2 online. Just make sure you got games you think you'll like online (Which shouldn't be a problem)

Kotor is an rpg where you can pause to set up your attacks. Don't need a steller frame rate for it. Played through it just fine on Xbox (Was not waiting on the PC version like I'm not waiting till Feb for KOTOR 2 on PC). No problems whatsoever.

Xbox.

Crimson Skies
Morrowind GOTY Edition
PGR2
Dead or Alive Ultimate

Insane amounts of fun.

Get a PS2 when they're $99. It's not worth more than that with Sony's shoddy QA.

Mech Assault

No, no, no.

If you want an on-line mecha game and have a router then get a PS2 and Armored Core: Nexus. You can play the game on-line via Xlink and they finally added analogue control to the series. While it's not an official on-line solution, it's better than making the mistake of slogging through a bad American made mecha game.

Hopefully the next release of AC will have out of the box on-line play.

Front Mission Online also looks very tasty if you're a robo-whore like myself.

The PS2 also gets the vote on account of niche titles and budget gaming availability.

Ignoring Rez of course. I would suggest you look into Frequency, which can be found for under $10 and is worth looking at. It also has on-line play.

PS2, no contest. Its library is unmatched and games like GTASA and MGS3 are no doubt some of the best of year if not the entire gen. The Ratchet and Clank games, Jak, Sly Cooper... you cant go wrong if youre into platformers and action. And suffice it to say its the home to a large stable of quality RPGs

Not to forget THE action game of this gen, Zone of the Enders 2

I play both systems quite a bit. Personally I like Metal Gear Solid 3 and San Andreas more than Halo 2. I'm also a sucker for platformers and Sony has that genre owned at this point just with its first party line up. They also have the bulk of what Konami, Capcom, Namco, and Square-Enix release. ANd all of those quirky niche titles and shoot em ups and brawlers are going to be on PS2(unless Sony decides it's not appropriatre for NA) The XBOX, by comparison, lags far behind the PS2 when it comes to stuff like platformers and the type of game Suare-Enix makes. It doesn't have nearly as much from the other big japanese publishers either. What the XBOX does have though are a lot of iffy ports of PC shooters and graphically superior versions of UBIsoft Tom Clancy games(which I tend to avoid). That, and Halo and Ninja Gaiden and some Sega games from a now displaced Smilebit.

I'm no fan of Mechassault...but I urge you to rent this first if a mech game is your primary reason either way. This game is horrid.

I can think of compelling reasons to get either system, so I suppose you'll just have to be the arbiter of your own taste.
