Struckmann gave it an

. Others have pretty muched echoed the same thing. Scarlett's doing a good job, and the visuals are great, but the writing is bad and the plot is utterly forgettable..

Bad writing and forgettable plot is worthy of an A-?

He was low-key blinded by his love of the original. There was no way he was going to give it a bad score.

Seeing it tonight for free thanks to a trial membership to Crunchyroll. I'm expecting the worst from Ghost in the Shell, but I'm glad that asian americans like ScarJo are getting the representation they need!

Honestly, give it a rest. Can we have one thread that is entirely focused on the reviews of the film and not fighting about the controversy? You have the OT for that.

Ultimately the real questions will be

1) how much money will it make
2) what lessons will they learn (or ignore) from all this
3) what will it mean for future adaptations

Eh, having seen the movie, you kind of can't have a serious conversation about it without talking about "the controversy." The film is, in some ways, literally about it's own controversy.

Yeah I wasn't really clear there.
Stuckmann thought it was legit and genuinely liked it, although it could of been better in some aspects. Others have echoed the same sentiments about the visuals and Scarlett's performance specifically, but have been much more blunt about the plot and the writing.

But there's also a pretty clear difference between "more than half the people who watched it liked it" and "only a third of the people who watched it liked it", yet both are called "rotten".
I guess, but then the number is still right there for you either way, so you can apply your own granularity with approximately 0 effort, so eh,

SO the minus is for bad writing and a terrible plot ? This Struckmann fellow sure sounds like someone i'd want to pay to hear more of his opinions on cinema!

I'm seeing it tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see about the scene people were complaining about.

But I have no issues with ScarJo taking the role. She worked hard on the movie, listening to her interview on Howard Stern the other day, she didn't phone it in or just have it handed to her.

He tends to rate based on emotional impact from the perspective of a geek for this stuff.

edge of tomorrow?
Think that was originally a novel and later a manga. Anyhow google says there was a Fist of the North Star and Guyver adaptation.. Mark Hamill was in Guyver? rofl

ok back on topic.

edit:

I didn't see Kite on there for some reason.

Hm, well, predictable. And I am not suprised at all. Might be a good movie to watch on BluRay, if the aestetics are really that good and it's still a decent action flick.

So then why designate it at all as either Rotten or Fresh?

It's really stupid that there's is literally a single percent between the two
I mean again, yeah, I guess. But again, it's not like the pertinent information isn't already given to you. My point is the metric itself is much more usable than the average, not that one has to bother with the extra scale they added.

Disappointed it landed around the fiftys after the 70% but I always thought it likely would settle there.

Seeing it Saturday so I'm excited! :)

X-post from the OT thread:

Just saw it. Holy shit. One million times worse than I thought it would be. PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS.

The absolutely IRONY of this literally being a ghost of a better movie in a prettier shell.

The music was great, and they made good use of the iconic chorus from the original. That's the only good thing I can say.

The subplot they added was so goddam embarrassing. I really wish they would have just done a shot for shot remake of the original.

My audience heckled at the "big reveal" about the Major. Rightfully so.

This movie is an insult to the original. They gutted everything that made the film intelligent.

Holy shit this is real?

Like, isn't the original anime problematic as thee fuck?

Kite is porn.

It's also shit, so I'm not really sure if the Live Action is any better.

Looks to be pretty mixed much like Power Rangers.

(And that was fun as hell so I'm probably in for this.)

To be fair, Power Rangers' source material is shit. It turned out to be a pretty solid flick riding on a strong cast and decent coming of age plot. It turning out to be mixed is more along the lines of expected to be shit, but they did a lot more with it then the material had any right to be.

GITS on the other hand has some of the best music, animation, and art style. With the SAC series providing an extremely strong source material to adapt the plot from. There is no excuse for them not to be able to adapt a strong flick from it. It having strong visuals, but shit plot as mixed is more of a damn shame.
