I might watch when it hits netflix?

I would have expected the reviews to eat it up and only hardcore manga fans to hate it...

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Down to 50% now.

I said so in the other thread, but Ghost in the Shell is pulling a Tron.

Which is fine, both films were a visual treat and have similar RT scores (and summary):
Tron Legacy boasts dazzling visuals, but its human characters and story get lost amidst its state-of-the-art production design.

Ghost in the Shell boasts cool visuals and a compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson, even if the end result lacks the magic of the movie's classic source material.

I'm excited

From what I understand they have a remix of the OG GitS theme by this Steve Aoki guy (IDK who he is). IMO it sounds bad and they didn't need to change the original theme. Seems like a waste of money.

The score was pretty subdued, actually. Effective, even. It was nothing like Kenji Kawai's score of the original to be sure, but it was its own flavor and certainly didn't take away from the film.

I just got back. I actually thoroughly enjoyed it, but SEIZURE WARNING. I know some movies have flashing lights, but there were at least two scenes where pretty much the entire screen was flashing rapidly with different colors.

Aside from that, I don't really have complaints. 8/10 for me. A bunch of positives:
  • I think this was my favorite role I've seen Scarlett Johansson in. She gets criticism for playing wooden characters, but I think she legitimately did a good job in this movie. She had the blank android look but provided enough nuanced emotion and body language for it to work.
  • The visuals were great, as expected. There were a lot of manga-esque shots where I could imagine how it must have looked, even though I never read the manga or saw the animated movie.
  • The soundtrack was good! It reminded me of Blade Runner and Mirror's Edge.
  • Speaking of Mirror's Edge, the whole cyberpunk world design was good and really made me want to replay Mirror's Edge / Catalyst.
  • Batou, the scientist lady, and the Section 9 boss all had good actresses/actors in my opinion. The boss in particular was badass.

Sort of negative:
  • The plot isn't super creative or complex, but I can appreciate a movie that takes something relatively simple and does it well.\
  • Seizure warning, as mentioned above. Those flashing lights didn't add much in my opinion.

As a big Ghost in the shell fan I really liked it. Very very surprised I didn't went in with very low expectationsz annoyed they had changed her name, figured it would be a crappy distillation of the anime. It was a solid tangential gits film and I enjoyed it.

Still excited to see it tomorrow in XD. Got a bit of weed and a free morning. Maybe I'll grab pancakes before the movie and get a big coffee.

Some directors I'll give their movie a shot in theaters even if RT/MC decimates it.

After seeing Snow White and the Huntsman, Sanders definitely aint one of those guys. Sounds like a skip until netflix.

Glad to hear that the visual design is pretty cool though, some of that definitely stood out in the trailers.

The movie was really good. Way better than I expected. Offend-otrons worried about white-washing need to see the movie before they complain.

Just because something has the possibility of being good doesn't mean it excuses absolutely deplorable ass choices on the casting director's part.

Also, very happy this film is faltering critically. Well deserved and I hope that the box office reflects this too.

The sad part is this is an almost ok adaptation. We're getting there making these movies better compared to video game movies but stuff like the casting needs to be addressed.

I'm not too concerned with the whitewashing. More concerned about the story. These reviews are making it sound like the film has all the visuals but none of the substance of what makes GiTS special.

I love the film, series, and the manga. I just don't know if I want to spend IMAX money for this or see it at a matinee.

Its a movie with a strong female lead character. With casting and setting far outside the typical Hollywood comfort zone. I honestly can't tell if you're trolling by being happy the film isn't good.

The problem is ScarJo has been given so many leading roles that it's getting tiring seeing her be the only option for female leads.

I only spent 8.50 so yea it doesn't hurt as much here. But actually believe it or not, they explain the white washing in the film. Not saying it was justified, but given that they wanted an extremely popular leading actress I can kind of understand. At least they connected it in a way that works though.

I am sorry but this is a continues to be a terrible excuse.

Sounds like what you'd expect from a Hollywood version of anything, honestly. A big bombastic spectacle with little substance beyond that.

Its an entirely reasonable excuse. If you're making an expensive movie based on an incredibly niche decades old movie from another country, which deals with concepts and ideas that are difficult(and uncomfortable), and has an art/visual style that is incredibly different from normal Hollywood.

Your investors, and anyone that funds your movie, is going to want assurances. The easy way for that is to use star power. Scarlet Johanssen is recognizable and very popular with your target audience. So unless you live in some magical internet reality, the movie has a very good excuse for casting a recognizable actress.

Yeah. Its shitty that is how the industry/money works.

Yeah fuck everyone who made the only competent anime to film adaptation and with a female lead!
C'mon dude.

I'm not familiar with the anime series at all. Is there anything I need to watch before going to see this movie? I mean like is there any quick recap video on YouTube?

You should watch the 95 movie and maybe Innocence after that.
Skip everything else.

Nah. It's pretty straightforward. Never seen it either but went to see the movie anyway. It was okay.

Not really needed. If you're willing, watch the original movie. If you like either the original, or this one, watch the series "Stand Alone Complex".

The series tends to discuss philosophy of the self, mind, and existence. Rarely drifts into Nihilism, as the original creator hated that.

So this movie isnt related to the anime in term of plot? So I could watch this and understand who the characters are without having to watch the anime movies.

Unlike let's say I would benefit from watching the past X-Men movies to understand the characters in Logan.

The only thing fans of GitS get from the movie is scenes recreated form the anime. Other than that the movie stands on it's own in terms of making you understand the characters and the plot. It's a weird interpretation of GitS where it tries to stay faithful to the source material but also tries to do it's own thing.
