Meme Run just looks like the full circle of people using memes that were created to mock other memes as regular memes. Montage videos at the very least can get away by saying they're parodying real montage videos. That context doesn't exist in Meme Run.

they turned it into an emote. at one point they turned the frog into a dog and there was a photoshop thread on SA and then they combined the dog with the :smug: emote to make a smug dug and I drew a pair of pixel sunglasses for the smugdog and made the sunglasses fall down on the dog's face with the words "deal with it" appearing to vaguely reference past SA memes and I have felt guilty about unleashing that bullshit on the internet ever since

I was partially involved in the creation of :awesome: and I feel kind of icky when I see it sometimes

rather, I guess it was more being part of it spreading from being an emote to being everywhere. A vector version I made of it still pops up from time to time but there a bunch of others out there.
