Kanji's arc did feel disappointing in the end, but I never understood people's issue with Naoto when it was very clear, as stated above, that she hid her gender because she wanted to be taken seriously by a male-dominated oppressive society (which is a huge problem on its own), not because she identified with the opposite gender.
