I guess Gone Home didn't grab me cause I didn't live in a 90s american household so I don't have much nostalgia for it's setting.

To me...that wasn't why i liked gone home.
I liked the personal stories it tells regardless of the time period it is set in.

I felt emotionally invested in the lives of these people i didn't know.

I understand if the game doesn't work for someone. But it hit me right in the happy zone of my brain/heart.

It's not that you're shitting on the thing, you're shitting on the people who like it too

I'm shitting on the value they put into the thing, not the person themselves. Similarly, I think that "whales" have done a lot of harm to the mobile market and they've help cultivate an environment that is less about making great games and more focus on how to squeeze as much money as possible out of the audience. I'm making a judgment about the effect they have had on the market, not the people themselves.

Yeah, I get that. I just....I just can't deal with those Dear Esther-like games (is there even an "official" genre name?). They just bore me to tears. I'm one of the people who would comment and say something like "I'D RATHER READ A BOOK" but I don't cause I get that some people really enjoy those games. It's just not for me. Like racing games. Those are equally boring to me, maybe even more boring. I just didn't thought the story was special in any way, and the gameplay was just so damn slow it killed my interest in the game completly. I never finished Gone Home. But whatever, I can recognize a good game even if I don't like it myself.

But 'art games' and 'simple modern art' to coin a phrase are so niche they barely have any effect on the popular market whatsoever.

You're right, the other just has a ham-fisted attempt at a narrative instead

Don't get me wrong, I didn't like Brothers much either, just pointing out that the 90's American nostalgia was probably a big reason Jeff and many others like him enjoyed the game. I personally got nothing out of either game.

Who is to say what is a "game" or "art"?

Let's say I cover your house/apartment--... nah, you live in a shack. Everyone says your shack smells like week-old guacamole, but I think it smells more like deep-fried beard wax. Anyway, let's say that I smother your SHACK in marshmallow creme and then throw frozen turkeys at it. I'm having fun with an established goal (entombing you in your shack via food confusion), and utilize a simple points system (each turkey that sticks to the marshmallow creme gives me ten units of your life essence). As the gathered onlookers ignore your screams from inside the marshmallow nightmare, they all give me high-fives and say how cool my jeans are. I got them on sale!

Before the insects descend on the scene and kill the game shack and any person within a 100-yard radius, you've gotta ask yourself one thing, punk: Are games art?

So I guess I have Indie Game Press™ cred now. Where's my pat on the back and writing re-awards?

Bradcasts are not games.

There, I said it.

I thought Jeff liked Gone Home mainly because of the themes and setting. I don't feel like he has a strong opinion either way on its 'gameyness', but if it was set in nonsense elf-land rather than the 90s he'd probably hate it.

I'm not saying that they are, I used that as an example of how being critical of "subjective value" doesn't mean I'm being critical of the actual person. In other words, I can hate an opinion without hating the person. I don't think that my opinions are infallible. I'm totally open to people engaging them and trying to convince me why they are wrong or misguided. If I just plug my ears and say "thats my subjective opinion, you can't question it!" -- I think that is anti-culture.

Still, calling it 'faux reverence' is kinda weird

Maybe there is a better term for it. By that I just mean that I think people often look for deeper meaning in places where none actually exists.

The comments on the new bombcast are just the saddest fucking thing.

Is that what's down with this Bombcast? I mean I was fine with this week's Bombin' the AM with the short GaymerX discussion (partially because Danielle Riendeau is pretty cool) but I just can't handle it if there's going to be huge chunks of this week devoted to talks about that Sarkeesian lady and how hateful people are if they believe in Christian standards or whatever. I remember shutting a Dumptruck off because I just couldn't deal with someone using the term "heteronormativity" without any sarcasm.

Not that there's anything wrong with this week's Bombcast existing, nor am I angry or anything...but with a lack of Vinny and Jeff, and an outspoken activist developer that's going to drive me bonkers...I may have to skip this one. Maybe.

Eh who am I kidding. I never miss a Bombcast. And maybe it'll be fine. Or I'll be really put out about it or something. Only one way to find out!

"Whelp, guys, we hired two professional straight white males because they were the ones qualified for the job and got unfairly targeted by a self proclaimed man hater and called misogynists and homophobes. Better play it safe and politically correct by bringing in an outspoken transgender activist to trump up a lying con-artist, male bashing feminist and promote an event specifically designed to segregate gamers and lump people together based on their sexual orientations, instead of bringing all gamers together. For the second time this week. You know, we gotta look fair and all."

Giantbomb, you continue to disappointment.

Alternating between laughter and noises of disgust is surprisingly hard!

I think I get hung up on the term 'faux', because it implies that they're not legit (to themselves at least) in their navel gazing - as if they're deliberately lying to you about how deep they are into analysis.

Ah, I got you. Yeah, there is probably a better term for it then.

Anyway, about the Bombcast, thats an interesting choice for the guest. I wonder if they'll touch on the controversy at all...

edit: Oh Nevermind, this is a different Samantha.

As I said in the Bombcast thread, I want them to film Dan's first time with Gang Beasts and Windjammers. I want to see his reactions. He never even heard of Gang Beasts!

Yep. The dude is a blast to watch when playing competitive games.

Does he have a game/genre he's good at? Like with Brad and Dota, or Jeff and fighting games?
