Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

I initially wanted Dan to not tell Drew anything but maybe he should now. Drew is terrible at the game and he's clearly not enjoying it. Or maybe Jason should sit with him instead even if that would mean no video guys working.

Just watched the latest MGSScanlon and goddamn.. Drew's playthrough is like a perfect storm of everything going wrong every step of the way..

Seems like most of his problems stems from not having a grasp on the mechanical logic in the game though. There isn't many other games that reward experimentation as much as Metal Gear, but Drew just seems afraid to try and instead bangs his head against the wall trying the same things over and over. In this episode he even says he feels that there are only one way to take out guards, which couldn't be further from the truth.

I'm looking forward to them trying out MGS2 after this, but I hope Drew starts to wrap his brain around what kind of (very weird) game MGS is. Otherwise I feel like that game will just end of feeling like a chore for him as well, even with first person aiming.

MGS is kind of a joke in a way. It realizes it is a video game and is totally fine with being campy as hell. Some people don't get that. It is all about being absurd.

even the fact that it's so self-serious is a joke. except when it's not, and then that's a joke.

in other words, best series.

MGS does a good job of this, as does MGS3.

The others kind of try to walk a weird line where Kojima simultaneously feels like he should be serious like a movie and funny like a video game.

Ground Zeroes is where I feel like he took the wheel and drove that car in to the wall.

plz vinny we're your original kids please dont forget about us

He told me that you're his firstborn son.

"That puck is not gonna hatch, brother. Let it go.

Is that a hockey dig?"

Oh my god this is hilarious.

To prove that everything is controversial, I remember that episode having a lot of detractors because they thought Johnny talked too much or whatever. It's one of the best Bombcast episodes ever.

I played NHL 15 this weekend on PS4 and Xbox One.

I'm not big into the series every year but it was really fun.

Also it is crazy how long Jagr has been playing.

No hate or anything, I mean I enjoy it but like, how is Drew so bad at Metal Gear? Even my casual friends I've played through the series with had less trouble. It's crazy. I hope he's still able to enjoy the rest of the series.

So happy that Beast is back!

I like how, for 8 whole minutes, Alex flat-out assumes that Vinny remembers the feature set and gameplay from last year's NHL game, lol.

What if this whole time we've been thinking all those plane games he plays are really hard and require manuals and detailed instructions, but he was just bad at those too?

Pretty sure at 49:05 in the latest Metal Gear video you can hear Jason go "God damn it!" in the background haha.

I love that he seems to be getting into it as much as Dan and Drew.

I have a theory that drew never played the PSone growing up and was an N64 kid instead. So he was exposed to well crafted, more finely tuned 3d experiences whereas PSX gamers were cutting their teeth on rougher and not-as-well designed 3D gaming experiences, giving us the gaming logic necessary to better handle something like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, or a MGS.

Basically, PSX gamers were so used to how nonsensical most 3d games were that they were better prepared and more receptive to the bizarre nature and gameplay mechanics in MGS1, whereas if you grew up in that gen with just an N64 you didn't encounter that as often by the virtue of Nintendo being design genuises and the platform not having as many games in general for one to be exposed to.

of course this all falls apart if he did have a psone. meh.

I'll tell you, the way Drew plays MGS is exactly how I played MGS back in the day, and it's why I kind of hate stealth games. You always have to be so cautious.
