Giant Bomb @ E3 2016 | WEED3

Why do I need time wasted on that during the press conference? There will be plenty of first-hand impressions throughout the week.

Trailer after trailer is literally what I want. Show me what unannounced games are in development.

I'm not even saying I completely agree with them but I at least understand where they're coming from.

I was in a LINE group chatting about the conference live.

I seriously thought that CoD demo was in VR the whole time until it was pointed out to me later that it wasn't.

A perfect example of the confusion is that they didn't even tell us when the "VR block" ended. We just had to infer that we were looking at Call of Duty and it wasn't in VR.

I rest my case.

What? It flowed like a fucking geiser. It was a different take on a press conference I guess, aimed much more at the wider internet audience. Far more entertaining than anything they've done before.

Maybe it's just because I don't mind some down sections, but for me it's not a good fit, when you have to constantly wonder: "So is this game exclusive, and if so in which way?", "What is the greater implications/gameplay loop here?" etc.
Then there was the pretty lackluster VR showing and the fact that the whole thing peaked with God of War and Horizon within the first 15 minutes.

Isn't 'context' exactly what actual E3 is for? You know, all the appointments they have over the next couple of days that they'll get to talk about later.

I think that Sony has recognized (correctly) that having a good E3 show is about hype. To be honest they're better served saving developers, date announcements, and in-depth looks at games for their own show PSX that they're doing every year.

But isn't that what a trailer is kinda supposed to do? Show what the game is. If all you need is to know that the game is in development, wouldn't just releasing a list of names be enough?

Horizon Zero Dawn
Days Gone
Detroit whatever the fuck it's called
Kojima Game
Spider-Man

All new IPs, something the rest of the industry is deathly afraid of.

spider-man is a new ip?

also calling that Kojima thing a game is generous.

And their are Giant Bomb fanboys who dismiss every criticism as being unjustified and the result of console fanboys.

Quite ironic, really.

Give me a legit criticism and we can talk. Saying they're up their own ass because they wanted more information on the games for their VR headset that is hitting in a handful of months isn't one. Its you acting like a troll.

This is the crazy thing. It is like how people were getting super defensive when members in the GB chat were saying they liked the last season of South Park earlier. The comments were in no way nasty or a slight at Alex.

Then that's a bad look for Sony if all they can trot out is VR shovelware four months before their headset debuts. Some of those games might have substance, most probably won't, it was just damned hard to tell with rapid-fire footage with zero explanation.
Like I posted earlier maybe it helps I had no expectations for PS VR and they thought it would be something. There is a small chance it might be more but I really doubt it.

I think people misunderstand what GB is looking for.

They watch these conferences for real, tangible details about real games that they know they'll be able to get their hands on. They were happy about the GOW and Horizon demos because they gave a good sense of what it's actually like to play those games.

The GB crew gets excited about games - look at Doom, Jeff can't stop raving about it.

But they know that teaser trailers and CG reels don't actually mean that much in the end - they're just a way to get people invested in a game before they have any gameplay to show.

So if you watch conferences to get HYPE off the fruitful efforts of marketing departments, then Sony did their job. But for guys like the GB crew who want solid info on games, I can see how it fell short.

Exactly, I think people fail to see that any one of these games could end up being a TLG situation or just end up plain disappointing and this is coming from someone who enjoyed this conference alot.

You just have to keep your expectations in check. I feel some people get offended for some reason lol, which is just fucking weird.

Spider-Man

Only two of those are new IPs this year.

Detroit and Horizon were around last year. By that logic, I'm pretty sure the Microsoft conference had just as many, if not more "New IPs" on their stage than Sony did. And I still have about 40 minutes left to watch of that conference, but already there is:

Recore
Inside
Cuphead
We Happy Few
Scalebound

Spider-Man is the definition of an old IP. It's over 50 years old.

Same. I wasn't particularity excited by MS's showing but they did a better job of pacing their show.

It's pretty amazing that people cannot comprehend the idea of personal taste.

If you are a fan of Giant Bomb you should already have a pretty good idea of what their personal tastes are in games.

I usually avoid everything GB because of their attitude, but hey, it's E3 so why not give it another try and see what's up in this thread.

This is the first thing i read.. I better sneak out right away.

Seemed to me that the GB crew really expects Sony to champion VR and lead the it forward. not having a strong VR lineup detailed with good demos wax pro about their biggest knock against the Sony conference. Ended with that middling Days Gone gameplay wasn't a good idea either. That being said I still really dug this conference, def above EA, MS and Ubi for me. Lots of gameplay, very little fat, expercted more Japanese titles tho

I think the time of day has to do with their mood after the Sony conferences. They usually just seem more tired and less perky when discussing the Sony stuff in the evening as opposed to Microsoft in the morning, which I think comes off as more negative to a lot of people. GB crew is evenhanded, so it's not big deal.

I'm not with them on needing more PR/executives talking about overall company direction and concepts during the conferences, though. That is literally what all of the press's meetings and demos over the next three days are for.

That felt very strange as an E3 press conference.

I suppose it makes more sense to go more business like here and shift the type of conference they usually put on to their Playstation Experience event where they will have an audience full of consumers to hype up.

look, this is in NO MEANS to discredit or say ANYTHING NEGATIVE about any press conference.

i just want to comment ubisoft and sony for putting time aside to acknowledge the horrible things that occurred in orlando.

good on them and good for our counyry.

Resident Evil looked super fucking intense for VR. Now that I've spent a lot of time with it, I know for goddamn sure I could not deal with that shit. Fucking never. Those videos you see of people flipping the fuck out when they see something scary in VR, that's me.

I'm interested in this new Intellectual Property "Spider-Man." What a time to be alive!

Technically not a new IP, but a new Spider-Man game being developed by a top tier developer is pretty exciting.

For reference I would call those Batman Arkham games their own IP even though Batman has a video game history.

Worth nothing that Microsoft did so to, the Giant Bomb stream just didn't catch it

My reaction lined up pretty much with GB. Horizon was by far the best looking game. I'm done with post apocalyptic zombie shooters. Sony could have done a better job setting up the trailers. Especially explaining what to expect from these vr experiences. Are those what they are counting as games?

I don't know what you guys are talking about

Kojima is making an interactive, invisible baby holding simulator

what more do you want

There's a weird air in here that any criticism of their criticism is unwarranted. I'm a Giant Bomb fan and premium subscriber, but that doesn't mean I agree with absolutely everything they say. Nor should I "stop watching" if I disagree, as I saw somebody else suggest earlier in here.

I think it's because the people who have followed GB closely for a while (like me!) are so tired of hearing the same stupid lines trotted out by people. You (not specifically you) aren't the first poster to observe that they have muted expectations, not the first to think they should have been more enthusiastic for something, etc. Every time a GB thread is made in Gaming, some posters crawl out to make the same points.

They get excited about games, just not always the ones you expect.

I think they just expected some actual games. Which is totally fair, but the VR games releasing on PS4 this year are probably a pretty known quantity at this point, so I guess Sony thought it would be cooler to show all the big publishers also getting behind PSVR even if it was only in small and sometimes pretty bad looking ways.

My favorite excuse is when Giant Bomb's negativity is ascribed to them being long time industry veterans who are immune to hype. Like Jeff is the only games journalist to attend every E3.

@Andrew_Reiner
I've been to every E3 press conference, and Sony's this year was easily the best one yet. So many great reveals.

Its one thing to have new IP indie games and new IP AAA games. One is a significantly higher risk. Sony has the former as well (Abzu, No Mans Sky etc).
