If you keep turning things off or lowering options at certain point it's gonna look worst than something working at 1080@60fps max settings.

Yup, which defeats the point for devs. So once again we're gonna be a situation where the touted resolution doesn't match the hardware in the box and we're left with games having sketchy and inconsistent framerates.
 
It sounds like that's what they want. HEaring them boast about how much more powerful Serpico was than the Xbox One, I imagined it was basically going to be the Xbox Two, but it sounds more like all that power is simply to get existing games to run in 4K, which makes me wonder how much of a difference that will make to the average consumer?

We are yet to see if the average consumer cares about 4K TV sets.

In some regards I'd liken it to Sony's 3D push on the PS3, in that post-Avatar period. Ended up where, nah, nobody cared. Benefit there was they didn't need to bring out new expensive hardware, not counting that weird 3DTV they sold. It's a gamble. As is PSVR.

I can see a crazy scenario where, say, the box after Scorpio plays graphic intensive games at 4K, where the Scorpio can run them at 1080p, and no support on the current XB1. It's all confusing.
 
It's not even to a certain point really. On a 5.6TF card I can already get 4K60 on Forza at max settings (ie. very well-made games will run and look great at 4K on console), and GTA 5 runs at 40FPS at 4K max settings. If I turn down a few settings that aren't even ultimately noticeable like grass density and reflection MSAA I can get 60 in that too.

Unnoticeable things do not eat much resosurces, things like textures, shaders, shadows, AA,etc are the ones that consume lots of the resources and most important is those are the ones directly affected by resolution changes.
 
Focusing on 4K seems heavily misguided to me, especially with the hardware they got. 6TF seems a lot, but for 4K it's meager, and equivalent PC hardware really struggles..

Its easy to see why though. XB1 always had a hard time hitting 1080p, while something like 90% of PS4 games achieved 1080p.

Now they're at a point where the Neo will struggle a bit to get to 4k, and the Scorpio will be able to attain that much easier thanks to an extra year of better tech, so they want to flip the script and become the premiere resolution box that they weren't with XB1.

The thing is...I just bought a 4k TV last week, and PS4 games look phenomenal on it. Doom looks so crisp and colorful, and Overwatch is just plain gorgeous. I can't imagine games looking better than that. And by can't imagine, I mean I literally can't envision how much more of an improvement it'll be. I'll have to run some PC games on it and see.

I guess my point is, I don't think consumers are gonna be clamoring for 4k content when 1080p content looks fantastic already. But hey, I need to try some 4k games myself to know for sure.
 
Today I learned something new about UWP. I thought it was like the older Windows 8 Apps where the only options were corporate/developer sideloads and the built-in store.
 
Don't normally watch this sort of stuff but this is a great interview, could never imagine anyone from Nintendo being this frank lol.
 
Pretty crazy how much focus there is on PC all around the industry after we went through that period last gen when it seemed like no one cared about it.
