That's pretty much where I'm at ever since they announced the Scorpio. Anything lower then that and it's going to be a surprise.

I was actually expecting $449 to more closely compete with the Pro at launch. $499 isn't a bad price either, but Sony still comes out ahead with a cheaper console by $100, if not more if Sony swings for a price drop this fall.

Sony could announce a price drop tomorrow if they wanted to, even a slight one. That would control the narrative.

I'd expect a price drop in September if Sony were to do one this year.

I think anything higher then 399 is suicide and feel like most of the "its gonna be expensive" talk from MS executives has been a smoke screen.

399 is the price they have to hit.
I see no reason they cant hit 399 with the hardware they have already announced.

I think its gonna be 399. Also 450 and 499 skus with better HDD's or bundled pro controllers or something tho.

399 is definitely the sweet spot if they wanna get a lot of people to buy it.

499 will depend on what they bundle it with.

The high need console is such a losing proposition.

If that theory that it's just a sweet $500 windows 10 pc for your living room, $500 doesn't seem so bad

If the PS4 pro is 400$ how do you expect them to hit that exact price with all new tech inside the Scorpio?(Unless they sell on a loss which is also a strategy).

Just tossing it out there.

Hardware is 499.

But MS pushed the emergency button and makes online play no longer require gold?

As far as good buy moves. Free online one thing MS could do. They could phase out gold and the revenue they get from it with Gamepass.

The Pro was 399 last holiday. I assume its cheaper to make now.

Scorpio could be 399 this year with its better specs. Thats how hardware works.

Now we are just writing fan fiction.

$399 or bust. After watching the Xbox One flounder at a $499 price tag, I don't see how on earth they could justify trying to get away with that again.

Geoff Keighley is making those tweets in the context of a poll he ran, where 40% of his followers voted $499. I don't know if he actually has any inside information, or he's just agreeing with the poll results to be cute.

Maybe they just don't want to lose a ton of money on each unit sold?

At some point you either bite the bullet and take the loss to get more consoles out to people or you look to make up your losses next gen. Sony had to do it with the PS3 but it worked out okay for them in the end because they had the library to support it. The issue is that MS doesn't have the library to really support it either.

I thought it would be $499 but with how well the PS4 is doing, with Switch coming on strong it seems like MS needs to do something to really push the Scorpio so selling it at a loss could be the way to get back into it. At $499 they had better have some amazing software to show.

I do too but who knows, maybe MS are playing him. This way in the end, they surprise everybody when it is lower than 499$.

I could see it.

I love Geoff but I dont trust him for shit, ya know?

I just feel "its gonna be premium" has just been a layup for "LOL NO its actually 399, how awesome are we?"

The money men at MS probably don't want to lose money selling a stopgap console that won't change their fortunes at all. It will sell to hardcore Xbone fans and nobody else.

Still, Keighley probably saw the conference rehearsal and they used $499 as a placeholder.

Gamepass will never make up for the money lost from declining Xbox Live subscriptions. Plus why would they replace one with the other when they can have both and still get people to buy into it?

I have too much respect for Keighley to believe he'd do that.

You know, I'm surprised Geoff is just revealing these Scorpio details hours before Microsoft's conference. It feels like it's mostly his job these days to facilitate these big reveals for companies. I guess if they're not paying him he's free to just say whatever he wants but also why bother?

Whatever anyways, it's also real dumb for anyone to worry about spoilers for large marketing press conferences as if it matters whether you find out something right now or a day later. But on the other hand I'm thinking that Geoff would sure be bummed if everyone spoiled all the reveals hours before his Game Awards airs.

Would be great if Microsoft is just playing him.

If that thing is 499 they need to present it as an entirely new console, not an upgrade to the Xbox One. Wouldn't be shocked if they dropped the Xbox One name at this point tbh.
They also desperately need to show games to convince people why they should spend that much money.

I bet Crackdown will be the showpiece for that console, remember how it "needed" THE CLOUD to render the destruction etc?

Not with this kind of hardware + vapor-chamber cooling.

He's also wearing a PSVR in his avatar. PLS make it happen.

We still don't know enough about how this console will be spun, though. What is a stopgap console really? This could be the first of a new iteration strategy for them. Maybe they just call them all Xbox.

Plus, if any company is going to have the room to eat money to regain market share, MS is it.

But I agree that this smells of a controlled leak.

At some you have to decide what you want as a company:

1) Try to chase down the market leader and pay the price for it. If it works, great. If it doesn't, disaster.
2) A healthy business.

I guess? But like, I built a $700 PC because I also use it for work related stuff. I don't think I would have done it if literally all it was for was gaming?

After the early leaks when they announced Scorpio they called it "the end of console generations". This isn't stopgap, it's just an iteration on the Xbone base from here on out.

What indication is there that they'd lose a ton of money on each unit? All these people so certain of its price, but none of them are operating on anything more than a feeling of "It's powerful so it's got to be expensive". Has anyone actually done a Bill of Materials breakdown?

Microsoft designed this hardware after having seen Xbox One tank at $500. I have a hard time believing that someone within the company would see that and say "Hey, let's design some more hardware that we can't sell for less than half a grand."

It's not even out yet.

Assuming they're going for the spec-hungry niche with Scorpio and they don't expect it to catch on with the mainstream as the new Xbox model to buy, $499 would probably be fine. I'd think the people interested in the Scorpio are likely the same crowd that would buy expensive launch consoles.

Edit: but yeah, still gotta have games to justify it for any crowd.

How do they think $500 reasonable? Hell, how do they think new hardware is reasonable when they have no exclusive games to justifying buying any model of Xbox?
