Giant Bomb (Gerstmann) Reviews Wii Fit

Yeah, I'm talking about people who will see an ad for fat loss products and become surprised when they discover it doesn't work.

To people saying Wii Fit is good for warming up, can't you warm up without it? I'm not trying to tell anyone how to spend their money, but can't people realize that if you're not buying the product to lose weight, you're buying it simply because it's a gadget?

Yeah, I pretty much bought it because it's a gadget. I have a bad habit of doing that, but in this case, it has got me more modivated to hit the gym more than once a week. I love checking in and seeing all the different graphs and tracking my progress. Sure, I could do it with a scale and an Excel spreadsheet, but that's not as much fun. Even if I just turn it on to "check in", doing those basic exercises will wake me up enough where I'm ready to go take a jog. Overall, I'd have to say that it has had a positive impact on my exercise routine.

It just boils down to many people not trusting Gerstmann with this specific type of review- products that simulate real-world activities with extensive leg or arm movements- after the infamous Wii Sports couch review. He didn't take that seriously, or at least approach the product on its own terms. It's like seeing someone review Guitar Hero by playing the game with a standard controller- I'm not likely to pay attention to their review of Rock Band.

This.

Well if it motivates you, that's good, but your results are probably not because of Wii Fit. You could have lost the same amount of weight without it.

And you could probably lose the same weight without "intensive cardio" or going to the gym. The fact is, there are an infinite number of ways to stay in shape and lose weight, so why troll on the people who are using Wii Fit as a supplement or starter program?

I'm not trying to defend them or anything but to be fair they had to play Wii for like 5 hours straight for the On the Spot special they had when the Wii first came out. I wouldn't want to be standing up that long playing Wii sports and i'm not even fat.

There were more Wii launch titles than just Wii Sports...

Hell they could have been playing Zelda: TP for the whole thing and nobody would have criticized their couch-fu.

If you're serious about getting fit, getting something like Wii Fit is a mistake. Whatever happened to eating right and exercising hard?

Wii Fit is nothing more than a novelty, or a fad. The balance board itself is a good idea, but fitness "games" are not. Nintendo's just exploiting the idea you can lose weight easily, just like ephedrine vendors before them.

I'm serious about being fit, and have been for years. I use Wii Fit daily and I'm not trying to lose weight. I play Wii Fit because it's fun. Nintendo isn't even marketing Wii Fit as a weight loss solution, people are just assuming that's what it is. If you are trying to lose weight it can come in handy as a tool that tracks your weight from day to day, but that's about it. I think the majority of people who play the game understand that.

If Wii Fit was particularly impressive as a work out machine, I wouldn't be opposed to recommending it to that audience. But it just has a really poor way of implementing sustained work out sessions, and it takes you out of the process so often. The board itself is decent enough to check the weight progress and such, but I'll continue to ride my bike.

What about those of us that uses Wii Fit regularly AND works out at the gym? Are we lazy as well?

$90.00 richer than you needed to be? Seriously, just donate to charity next time.

If you stick with it a while, you will unlock things like advance step aerobics, 10 minute step program, and 10 minute step boxing. When exercising, you should be doing at least 10 minutes for it to be effective. If you do two expert step boxing programs back to back, that actually turns into about 25 minutes of mid-range aerobic exercise that gets the heart rate up into the "fat-burning" range (as long as you are doing good punches).

I usually run for about 30 minutes and do 2 sets of step boxing after some strength exercises through Wii Fit, and I've dropped over 10 lbs in about 2.5 weeks. It's good for keeping track, keeping you honest, but there are some exercises that you can do for a fairly sustained workout.

And things like strength training activities in Wii Fit probably shouldn't be done back to back to back to back due to the nature of those exercises.

Overall yeah, sustained cardio or aerobic activity is not Wii Fit's strong suit, but it does provide some options for longer sessions.

I work out regularly but thought about getting Wii Fit mostly because I thought it would be cool to have weight and BMI tracking. Then I realized I already have a scale and Excel so that would be a waste of $90. The balance board would be cool to have for upcoming games but I'm just going to wait and see if a) the balance board games are actually good and b) the balance board gets sold separately.

And eventually you unlock free step and run sessions where you can do it for up to 30minutes without interruptions. I've worked my way to to that and now put the wiimote in my pocket and do my 30 minute run on my treadmill. I find it to be an excellent motivator and tracking tool and a heck of a lot cheaper and more convienent than going to weight watchers for weigh-ins and to have someone say you need to lose weight. One feature I would have liked to see would be some sort of online tracking where you could compare your results with a friend or others in your same age/weight range for extra motivation.

Newsflash. Some people find exercise terribly boring and this helps them get something interesting to them out of it. You could also listen to music or podcasts or something, but if it gets some folks a little more interested in their progress and health then is it such a bad thing?

Oh, Jesus Christ. Really? You mean it was possible to lose weight BEFORE Wiifit was released, and its possible to lose weight in OTHER WAYS? Amazing! What a revelation!

What distorted logic you have. I think your previous tag of 'not that smart' was alot more apt.
I use Wiifit to sweat a bit and raise my heart rate while at home, in a somewhat entertaining fashion. Are you going to lecture me about how I can do the same thing in other ways? Noone here is arguing that Wiifit consist of extremely arduous activity, but it seems you like to pretend thats what people are saying.

Yeah, I just about lost it. I could understand sitting on the couch and phoning it in if you've had a Wii for a while, but at that time it was an exclusive "unboxing and impressions" video. This was literally their first time playing it, and they couldn't exert enough energy to stand up and swing their arms. It's not like Wii sports is a heavy-duty workout.

If I ever play Wii Sports again, and I won't, I would play it sitting down too. Wrist flicks work in Wii Sports- broad, realistic movements don't. Any standing or darting about a room like an idiot would be contrived and frivolous.

Wii Fit review!

Brought to you by the fatass who wouldn't get off the couch when demoing Wii Sports Bowling!

It's sure to be a fair and balanced accord.

Did you read the review? or are you just another guy who hates Jeff for his Zelda review?

I just could not believe that, after going through all sorts of weird contortions to avoid standing up to play Wii sports, he had the gall to answer "So, Jeff, does it feel like real Golf?" with a sour look and "Not at all."

:lol

I need a video now. I have seen the video of him playing wii tennis, but that is it.

I wonder when people review WiiFit, do they review it with its price in mind. People tend to bitch that GT5:P is a demo that costs $40, but content for content wise both are almost the same, except WiiFit is what, $70?

think of the Wii board as an investment as you can use it for other games.

Wat. How can you compare the content of these two completely different games? It's not even remotely in the same genre or market. Nevermind the fact that Wiifit comes with hardware.

But they're still games right? When reviewers talk about reviewing games, they say that they want to review it for its value, i.e, for how much it costs and how much it can provide.

If they review it as a $70 accessories, that's fine. BUt if u're gonna review it as a game, review it as a $70 or $80, forgot how much it cost, game.

Would I get banned for blatantly calling him fat? Technically speaking it would be more stating the obvious, than a fat joke.

WHAT HAVE YOU ALL DONE!?!?!

You make fun of Jeff and there still isn't a Bombcast yet! What am I going to listen to on my commute tomorrow? Nintendo Voice Chat:lol

I hope you're all happy

Crap like Wii Fit disgusts me. It's designed for people who are too lazy to enter an intensive cardio and actually lose weight. And no, I've never played it or seen anyone play it.

You can't tell me with a straight face that video games can keep you fit.
I consider myself an athlete, but one round in that boxing arcade game wore me down more than an hour at the gym. DDR is almost as tiring. So it's possible, in theory, but people are buying Wii Fit for the idea that it can get you in shape. Very few people are going to make it an integral part of a long term fitness plan.

Companies aren't selling products anymore. They're selling stories.

So you don't know what it's like but are still talking shit about it? Please get the fuck out. :lol
You're effectively saying that exercise won't get you fit. Because that's what WiiFit does, it teaches you about exercise and makes you aware of your body. Not only that, but it is an excellent motivator.

Yourself! Fitness does a much better job of it and doesn't cost $70. You also don't have to make room for another useless accessory.
